Writing about containers and jails today for #openzfsmastery.
Language management is a big part of writing a tech book. Techies are both notoriously bad at language, and notoriously picky about it. Containers and jails are types of lightweight virtual machines. I don't want to keep repeating "lightweight virtual machines" multiple times in a paragraph, so I need a good short punchy word.
I could abbreviate and call them LVMs, but Linux folks have different associations for that abbreviation.
The current attempt is to call them "lightweight virtual machine instances" 2-3 times to build an association in the reader's brain, then call them "instances" for the remainder of the chapter. It wouldn't work for a longer piece, but I think I can get away with it for half a chapter.

I'm looking for a very tall comic about creating art. At the top, where all these artists are creating happy fun stuff, this punk dude is making a death balloon on a chain. His friend is laughing at him for doing weird stuff that nobody likes. The punk kicks his death balloon off a cliff, where it plunges into a deep dark abyss, chain rattling behind it.
At the bottom, someone buried in muck grabs the chain and uses it to pulls himself up.
Anyone remember who did this or where it is?

IIRC, split horizon DNS on a MS DNS server is an absolute pain.
Either a) register a real domain for $10/year, use it internally, and never let the public query that authoritative server, or b) use internal.corpdomain.com and accept information leakage, or c) stand up two conflicting zones, one for the public and one off your domain controllers. All three work. Choose your pain.

How do the BSD groups feel about documentation?
OpenBSD/OpenSSH believe complete docs should be included with the software, but those docs do not necessarily need to be friendly to new users. Otherwise they rely on the countless tutorials & howtos, and good luck!
(At times I fear that their solution is "MWL will write it!" which is... suboptimal. Yes, I wrote a best-selling book on OpenSSH, and I rely on that for paying the rent, but ideally, every project would have newcomer-friendly docs. But nobody's written them.)

In the last couple weeks, I've twice added small things to that list. Nothing vital, merely tidbits. I thought I might share it near the holidays or something.

BUT
Any given person will miss 50%-75% of subtext. Finding subtext is hard.
Want an example? Study the humor of Terry Pratchett. Mark the jokes. Have someone else do the same. Compare your highlights. I guarantee that you each missed jokes that the other saw, and that you both missed half of them. Part of his brilliance is that he was still funny.

Got into the #openzfsmastery manuscript and found I had to fact-check a Debian detail.
Which means getting my crashbox online.
My office has no cabling. Connection options are a wifi bridge or ethernet-over-power.
If I use ether-over-power, I must either daisy-chain powerstrips or buy a powerstrip with many plugs and a ten-foot cord. My experience with EoP has been unpleasant, but that might have been because the old house was wired in 1949 by a clearly PTSD-addled pipefitter.

#Firefox now has a global AI killswitch.
Settings->AI Controls->Block AI Enhancements. Turn it on and live in peace.

Since the move, my Mac Studio refuses to recognize devices attached to any external USB hub.
System Report shows the hubs, just not anything hooked to them. #headdesk
Gonna go work on something else. Maybe my bed has stopped stinking like a dead thing?

First attempt at cargo bike, suggested by @npub1hyj…avly.
Yes, yes, Sam Vimes is my favorite economist, but if a cheap rack buys me a year or two so my finances stabilize, it's worth it.

Biked to the local grocery store to get bananas and bread.
Put on my mask before going in thinking "It's Sunday morning. Almost nobody's here. Why do I bother?"
A crowd of folks right inside the door, Brownian shuffling like extras in a computer game. Okay, maybe there are people here.
Get my stuff. Go to cashier. Pay.
Bagger lets out giant sneeze, then another. "Sorry, I'm loud." Wipes his streaming eyes.
Ah, yes. That's why I'm masking.
(Yes, I know. Nobody working as a bagger can afford to be sick, because America.)

The plus about my life blowing up: I can join Monsterdon tomorrow night! That'll be nice.
(checks hashtag, sees what's lined up)
Oh. My. Dog. I haven't seen this in forty years. For reasons.
Oh well, at least it's not Laserblast.

My "You can't buy a complete collection of Mythbusters except for Chinese bootlegs" rage has just been rekindled.

I need a low-power NAS to serve music. Most of my test gear is waaay overpowered.
Just remembered that I still have a Soekris net4801. I could install netbsd & samba. USB storage isn't ideal, but if I put the OS on the CF and the overwhelmingly-read-only music on USB it'd last a while.

One of my plans for separating was to do a lot more bicycling. I live within easy bike distance of various shops.
I'd need bike panniers.
Looking around, it seems that my options are "drop a hundreds I don't have on Ortlieb or Trek," or "buy something inexpensive that will fall apart in a year." :flan_tired:

Baked a pack of bacon for dinner BLTs on these hot days.
The guys live about ten feet from the kitchen now. I turned around to see... this.
Yes they got tidbits, I'm not a monster. #petRats #rats

Today's challenge: laundry. The complex machines use an app and connect via Bluetooth.
Neither my phone nor my tablet can find them.
The app says "enter the location code on the sign by the machines!"
There is no location code.
Fortunately, quarters still work.

I can't attend #bsdcan this year. Sad to miss my first year in decades, and my first as con chair alumni.
Con chair [@bsdtv](https://bsd.network/@bsdtv ) is doing a fine job, though. Everything is fine. Remember, Pat: EVERYTHING IS FINE.
