Today in Labor History May 18, 1979: An Oklahoma jury ruled in favor of the estate of atomic worker Karen Silkwood. Kerr-McGee Nuclear Company was ordered to pay $505,000 in actual damages and $10 million in punitive damages for negligence leading to Silkwood’s plutonium contamination. On appeal, the court reduced the settlement to a pitiful $5,000, the estimated value of her property losses. In 1984, the Supreme Court restored the original verdict, but Kerr-McGee again threatened to appeal. Ultimately, Silkwood’s family settled out of court for $1.38 million and the company never had to admit any wrongdoing.
Silkwood first started working at Kerr-McGee in 1972. She joined the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers union and participated in a strike. After the strike, her comrades elected her to the union’s bargaining committee. She was the first woman to attain that status at Kerr-McGee. In this role, one of her duties was to investigate health and safety issues. Not surprisingly, she discovered numerous violations, including exposure of workers to radioactive contamination. The union accused Kerr-McGee of falsifying inspection records, manufacturing faulty fuel rods and other safety violations. After testifying to the Atomic Energy Commission, Silkwood discovered that her own body and home were contaminated with radiation. Her body contained 400 times the legal limit for plutonium contamination and she was expelling contaminated air from her lungs. Her house was so contaminated they had to destroy much of her personal property.
Later, she decided to go public with documentation proving the company’s negligence. She left a meeting with union officials in order to meet a New York Times journalist. She brought a binder and packet of documents supporting her allegations with her. However, she never made it, dying in a suspicious car crash. The documents were never found. Some journalists believe she was rammed from behind by another vehicle. Investigators noted damage to the rear of her car that would be consistent with this hypothesis. She had also received death threats shortly before her death. However, no one has yet substantiated the claims of foul play.

Today in Labor History May 17, 1974: Cops raided the headquarters of the Symbionese Liberation Army in Los Angeles, killing six members. It was one of the largest police shootouts in U.S. history. The cops fired 5,000 rounds and the SLA fired 4,000. Prior to the shootout, the SLA had committed several bank robberies and murders. However, they were most famous for kidnapping newspaper heiress Patty Hearst. One of the conditions they demanded for her release was for the Hearst family to distribute four hundred million dollars’-worth of food to the Bay Area poor. In actuality, over 100,000 bags of groceries were distributed. The SLA was a Maoist organization that saw itself as an American version of urban guerillas, like the Tupamaros, in Uruguay. By most accounts, the SLA was a group of confused wingnuts. Leader and founding member, Cinque, has been accused of being a police informant.

Insects are disappearing, up to 1% per year, by some estimates. Because many insects pollinate crops, lower insect abundance has hurt everything from ecosystem health to crop yields. This in turn is causing malnutrition, hunger, lots of income.

Today in Writing History May 5, 1864: Nellie Bly, American journalist and author, was born on this day. Bly was famous for her record-breaking trip around the world, which she completed in 72 days. This was faster than Phineas Fogg’s trip, in Jules Verne’s “Around the World in 80 Days.” However, she also pioneered investigative journalism. In one of her most celebrated pieces, she went undercover to report on abuse and neglect at the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island. Her report created a sensation, which led to some reforms.

Today in Labor History March 29, 1797: William Godwin married Mary Wollstonecraft. Godwin was an English journalist, philosopher and novelist. And one of the first modern proponents of anarchism. His most famous books are “An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice” and “Things as They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams,” a mystery novel that attacks aristocratic privilege. Wollstonecraft was a British writer, philosopher, and advocate of women's rights, and is regarded by many as one of the founding feminist philosophers. Her most famous book was “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman” (1792). She died 11 days after giving birth to her second daughter, Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein.

Today in Labor History March 20, 1922: The Red Army completed their defeat of the Iakov Fomin Mutiny. In March, 1920, Iakov Efimovich Fomin, formerly a Cossack commander within the Red Army, and inspired by the Kronstadt mutineers, led a mutiny against the Bolsheviks over food requisitioning for the Cossack troops. The mutineers’ slogan was, “Down with the requisitioning! Down with non-local Communists!” They had nearly 100% support among the local population of Veshenskaia, with many local peasants and anarchists joining the uprising. The mutiny developed into a 2-year guerilla uprising against Bolshevik terror and repression and for the power of worker-led soviets. They called on all citizens to rise up and establish “the true power of the whole laboring people.”

Today in Labor History March 20, 1985: The Bolivian authorities sent in the army to crush a General Strike. Workers had launched the strike in response to austerity measures by the Siles Zuazo administration. They demanded higher wages, stable food supplies, price controls and the president’s resignation. At the time, inflation was 3,400%. 10,000 miners filled the streets of La Paz each day. The General Strike lasted 16 days and spread to Santa Cruz and Chuquisaca. On March 24, the miners accepted a government offer to quadruple the minimum wage. They eventually forced Zuazo to resign.

Today in Labor History March 13, 1920: The Kapp Putsch attempted to overthrow the new German republic. While the government officials fled, workers launched a General Strike and refused to cooperate with the nationalists and royalists behind the coup attempt. The General Strike effectively ended the right-wing assault on the republic. However, it also inspired even more radical actions by the workers, including the Communist Ruhr Uprising, which lasted from March 13 through April 12. The government utilized the right-wing Freikorps to suppress the uprising, killing over 1,000 workers.

Today in Labor History October 12, 1892: The Pledge of Allegiance was first recited by U.S. school children, without any mention of god. The Pledge went through several iterations over the following decades, but it was not until 1954 that the word “god” was added to it, to ingrain in U.S. children how much superior they were to the godless communists in the USSR.

Today in Labor History October 8, 1965: The Indonesian military, led by future dictator Suharto, began torturing and massacring thousands of "suspected" Communists, leading ultimately to the overthrow of leftist President Sukarno. Other targets of the murders were members of the Gerwani women’s movement, trade unionists, ethnic Javanese Abangan, ethnic Chinese, atheists, teachers, students, and alleged leftists in general. The U.S. embassy provided the death squads with the names of suspected “communists.” Intelligence agencies from the U.S., U.K., and Australia provided anti-communist propaganda, as well as military and logistical aid. Overall, the genocide (1965-1966) led to 500,000 to 1.2 million civilian deaths and 1.5 million imprisoned. A top-secret CIA report from 1968 called the massacres "one of the worst mass murders of the 20th century, along with the Soviet purges of the 1930s, the Nazi mass murders, and the Maoist bloodbath of the early 1950s." Nevertheless, Western media either downplayed the events, or celebrated them. Suharto remained in power until 1998, continuing to imprison, torture and slaughter workers and civilians. He also presided over the East Timor Genocide of up to 300,000 people in the 1970’s.

Yes, gets at why Trump wants complete control over every source of information: universities free of leftists and pro-Palestinian activists; media networks completely servile to him; Turning Point clubs at every public school; Museums and K12 curriculum completely devoid of all references to any actual U.S. history that makes white Christians look at all bad; erasure of the genocide of Indigenous people; the rehabilitation of slavery from a brutal, oppressive, profitable system, to one that was paternalistic and actually helped black people; insistence that MAGAs are not fascists, but just good old patriotic Christians being oppressed by the Communist Democrats in Chicago, D.C., L.A., and Portland.
But even this won't erase the fact that so many of us are struggling just to put food on the table, having to choose between paying rent or buying medicine, watching masked thugs disappear our neighbors, friends and coworkers, watching our tax dollars facilitate a genocide in Gaza, increasing finding ourselves at risk of becoming unemployed for our social media posts. Everyone can see this, feel this, even many of those who had voted for Trump in the first place. Why he's losing so many of his supporters.

New monument commemorating the anti- Asian Rock Springs Massacre in Wyoming. The massacre was led by the The Knights Of Labor, in 1885, a union that accepted women and African Americans, but remained rabidly racist toward Asian immigrant workers. They killed 28 Chinese laborers and destroyed the town's Chinatown.
Ironically, the town of Rock Springs is situated in a county which voted 76% for Trump, and which actively collaborates with ICE, yet has celebrated an International Day for over 100 years to commemorate the 55 nationalities whose labor in the coal mines and on the Railroads built the town.

Today in Labor History September 28, 2000: An uprising, known as the Second Intifada, began after the Camp David summit failed and Ariel Sharon, the butcher of Lebanon, visited the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Thousands of Palestinians were killed by Israeli soldiers during this Intifada. Just over 1,000 Israelis died. Union membership in the U.S. peaked in the 1940s at 35% and has been steadily declining each year. In 2024, it had dropped to only 9.9%.
At the same time, the wealth gap skyrocketed, with CEO-to-Worker compensation rising from roughly 20:1 in 1965 to nearly 399:1 in 2021.

This week in Labor History September 20-27, 1950: The U.S. Navy sprayed Serratia marcescens and Bacillus globigii bacteria over the San Francisco Bay Area in an illegal biological weapons test. Two weeks later, 11 residents checked into Stanford Hospital with very rare and serious urinary tract bacterial infections. One of them died. There was also a spike in pneumonia cases and heart valve infections in San Francisco. The military never alerted local authorities about the test. There were numerous other similar attacks in Dorset, England, New York, Panama City, Key West, Minnesota, and Washington, D.C.’s national airport and Greyhound bus terminal.

Today in Labor History September 26, 1874: Sociologist and photographer Lewis Hine was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. In 1908, he became the photographer for the National Child Labor Committee and spent the next decade documenting exploited child labor to help the organization’s lobbying efforts to end child labor in American industry. The book cover for my novel, Anywhere But Schuylkill, is based on a Hine photograph.

Today in Labor History September 24, 1919: The Ukrainian anarchist Black Army outmaneuvered and ultimately defeated the White Army of General Denikin. The Black Army (AKA Makhnovtsi) was an anarchist army made up of Ukrainian peasants and workers during the Russian Civil War of 1917–1922. It was named after their leader Nestor Makhno and protected the free soviets and libertarian communes in the stateless anarchist liberated portion of Ukraine known as Makhnovshchina that lasted from 1918 to 1921.

New poll shows that only about half of Republicans see the U.S. on the right course, down from 70% in June. Overall, 25% of Americans say things are moving in the right direction, down from about 40% in June. The drops were particularly significant among women and among younger Republicans.
The decline should come as no surprise. Trump's policies have shattered the fantasy that he would protect Americans' freedoms. The mass arrests by masked ICE thugs have terrified and disgusted millions, souring even many Republicans who still cling to the delusion that America stands for liberty, equality and justice. The bullying of universities, media companies, and the mass firings and deportations of people who speak out against his policies have also alienated many on the right who believe in Free Speech and due process. The increase in political violence has frightened and repulsed people from both parties. And his insane rants against trans folks, particularly in the wake of the Charlie Kirk killing, have become so unhinged that even many of his diehard followers must realize by now that he's full of b.s. Likewise, contrary to the naïve belief that he’d keep us out of wars, he’s escalated U.S. support for the Genocide in Gaza and ordered unprovoked attacks on Venezuelan ships. As of July 25, he’d already ordered 500 military attacks on other countries, nearly the same number as Biden had ordered over his entire tenure.
However, the most significant betrayal of his base has probably been on the economy, which he’s brought closer to stagflation than it’s ever been since the mid-1970s. Unemployment is up, exacerbated by his mass firings of federal workers, which hit red states particularly hard. And prices are way up, too, and will likely continue to climb as the effects of his tariffs and Big Heinous Bill start to take hold.

Today in Labor History September 2, 1885: 150 white miners, mostly affiliated with the Knights of Labor, attacked their Chinese fellow workers in the Rock Springs massacre in Wyoming. As a result, they killed 28 Chinese miners, wounded 15 others and forced all the other Chinese to flee town. By the time the federal troops arrived, there were no surviving Chinese people left in town. The bosses had been preferentially hiring the Chinese immigrants at lower wages than the European immigrants. The Chinese Exclusion Act, passed in 1882, also contributed by fanning the flames of anti-Asian bigotry.

California's leading Republican candidate for governor, Kyle Langford, has a platform that includes incinerating unhoused and unemployed people in concentration camps, like Auschwitz, which he called a "beautiful work camp."
He also wants to force undocumented immigrant women to marry incels to avoid deportation. Immigrant men just get deported. And make Catholicism the official state language.

As California's first Atmospheric River of the season dies out, I thought folks might like to read my article: "Worse Than the Big One," about the Great Flood of 1862, caused by nonstop Atmospheric Rivers lasting more than 40 days straight.
It was the worst natural disaster to hit the west in the last 160 years, inundating much of the land, from Oregon to San Diego. The agriculturally rich Central Valley became a vast inland sea, 300 miles long and 20 miles wide. The state capital in Sacramento was under water for six months, forcing the government to relocate to San Francisco. 33% of California’s state property was destroyed, along with one in every eight private homes. Thousands of people died, possibly up to 1% of California’s entire population. And while floods of this magnitude used to happen every 200 years or so, models generated by Daniel Swain and researchers at UCLA’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences found that they will now happen roughly every 65 years, due to the effects of climate change. Swain also predicts a 20% increase in the intensity of megastorms, meaning the next one could be far more devastating.
The event also influenced the course of wars. In New Mexico Territory, for example, the flooded Rio Grande impeded the California Column as it attempted to cut off the retreating Confederate Army of New Mexico, allowing them to escape into Texas. And in California’s Owens Valley, it brought the Paiutes, who were on the brink of starvation because the storms had decimated the wild game they relied on, into conflict with ranchers, who were trespassing on their lands to graze their herds. Over 200 Native Americans died in the Owens Valley Indian War (1862-1867), along with roughly 60 members of the California Militia.
Even without the effects of climate change, the consequences of a megaflood today are much more serious than they were in 1862, when California had only 500,000 residents. Today there are hundreds of communities and large cities just in the vulnerable Central Valley, with a combined population of 6.5 million people. The Sacramento area, alone, is home to more than one million people, while Fresno has over 500,000 people, and Bakersfield has nearly 400,000 residents. The Central Valley includes the flood plains of two major rivers, the Sacramento and the San Joaquin, as well as many smaller rivers that drain down from the Sierra Nevada mountains.
This is not just a problem for Californians, either. Another flood like the one in 1862 would have a dire effect on the availability and cost of food for everyone in the U.S. The Central Valley comprises less than 1% of all U.S. farmland, yet it produces 25% of the nation’s food supply, including 90% of the broccoli, carrots, garlic, celery, grapes, tangerines, and plums, as well as 40% of the lettuce, cabbage, oranges, peaches and peppers, and over 20% of the milk. That is $46 billion worth of food annually, double the next most agriculturally productive state in the U.S.
A megaflood would also be an ecological nightmare. There are still lots of cows in California, nearly 4 million, to be precise. A massive flood would severely pollute the soil and groundwater with rotting carcasses, highly pathogenic H5N1 birdflu, and concentrated manure. Then there are all the other toxins in the region, like fertilizers and pesticides. In Kern County, alone, farmers use 30 million pounds of pesticides per year, while California, as a whole, uses over 200 million pounds of pesticides. Kern County is also one of the nation’s most prolific oil-producing regions, generating 70% of California’s oil and more than double what the state of Louisiana produces. It also has two large refineries. A major flood would pull much of these toxins into the soil and ground water and quickly spread them throughout the flooded regions, creating by far the biggest Superfund clean-up site in the nation’s history.
