This weekend I went to Paris, to the Jardin des Plantes in particular, which this year is hosting a new edition of its famous lantern trail, entitled ‘Jurassique en voie d'Illumination’!
Very pretty (even if it was very cold), if you're passing through Paris I recommend it!

One incredibly specific association is with the chocolate manufacturer Cadbury.
Its famous Dairy Milk was given purple wrapping in 1915 — because it had been Queen Victoria's favourite colour — and has had it ever since, thus creating a peculiarly British meaning for purple.

In 1856 an eighteen year old English chemistry student accidentally invented a purple dye — which came to be known as mauve — and thereafter purple clothes became incredibly fashionable for a few decades.
Further synthetic purples invented during the 19th century finally allowed painters to fully embrace it.
And it was the Impressionists, more than anybody else, who exploited the new possibilites of these many shades of purple — none more so than Claude Monet.

So purple, by virtue of its rarity in nature and the difficulty of reproducing it, has gained a sort of prestige and mystique unique among colours.
Red, blue, green, yellow, orange, and everything between are common and tend to have lots of associations — purple, not so much.

Beyond being difficult and expensive to reproduce as a dye or pigment, purple is also one of the rarest colours in nature.
Comparatively, few animals, plants, or natural phenomena are purple, and therefore we tend to notice it more when we do see it.
Purple is a "non-spectral colour", meaning it has no wavelength of its own but is always a combination of others on the visible light spectrum — red and blue, specifically.

Because producing purple was so difficult and expensive — supposedly worth more than gold — it was scarce and therefore prized, and so it was favoured by royalty.
Purple is even mentioned in the Old Testament, specifically, to be used in the tabernacle.
Rulers all across the ancient world wore Tyrian purple, and so it became the colour of royalty, prestige, and might.
An association that has remained ever since.

Now, porphyra referred to a very specific purple dye produced by treating the secretions of a snail called the spiny dye-murex.
Thousands of these snails — only found in parts of the Mediterranean — had to be harvested to make even a small amount of this dye.
This practice of using the spiny dye-murex to create purple dye goes back 4000 years.
It was common in the ancient city of Tyre, and so the particular shade of purple it produced, came to be known as "Tyrian purple".

The best place to begin is with the word itself.
The English word purple descends from the Latin "purpura", which also meant "purple-dyed" rather than just referring to the colour.
Purpura came from the older Greek word "porphyra", which had the same meaning.
