so you can have your local recursive/caching server.
With unbound you have local resolver with no dependency on google/cloudflare/etc, private, fast, almost 0 resources required.
And then Pi-Hole does the filtering magic.

Yes.
In no way, shape or form should DNS be exposed to the internet in the 1st place.
I would also recommend using unbound as a local resolver, for speed and privacy (guide on PiHole site).

best way is to run PiHole and Tailscale on the same host/vm/lxc.
That way you also get to see tailnet IPs in PiHole’s logs and not just the exit node’s.
Also make sure you have permit all origins set under DNS in PiHole.

Absolutely love it! Been using it for some time.
The only thing I miss is user account. Not a fan of exposing it to the internet open.
