I think about visibility as a prerequisite to empathy. As our societies have gotten larger, and more layered, I wonder how often the elites cross paths with difference classes of society. What used to be every day mixing maybe decades ago, to today when you can spend months and years with all your needs met - and never spending any significant time with slices of society with unmet needs.

This article says the French people want to save Duralex, but as an American who had a couple of sets of Duralex Picardie glasses, I know why. Durable, attractive, well balanced, nice weight. Also they're formed now into something of a worker cooperative? I hope they make it.

Even this very conversation is somewhat stifled by a neoliberal economic framing. It talks about the mechanisms (which have been demonized vocabularies - taxes!) and skirts around the value - the very idea that many public goods can be procured by government in ways that are more economically efficient than privatized methods

Building societies seem closer to US credit unions. Fannie/FreddieMAC are more like brokers that specialize in purchasing loans from banks and credit unions. Fannie enforces the standards of those loans, may hold some and in turn may bundle off groups of loans as standardized securities that the larger financial sector can trade in. But, the buying frees the banks to issue more loans.

The financial services sector loves tax breaks. Tie the lending to issuance of securities with a tax discount for lending to housing cooperative projects. They could be a specialized form of Mortgage Backed Securities issued by, well in the US it would be something like a Fannie/Freddie Mac. I don't know what orgs would be involved in the UK. Housing costs are the bane of stability to most western democratized nations at this point. Something new has to be tried

Perhaps favored lending to housing cooperative projects would be interesting. The structure of lending in the current systems means that corporate developers and landlords are generally the most frequent builders of multi-dwelling housing projects. There is a lot of devil in the details, but it would be nice to align lending, with building more housing of the scale people can afford.

one effect of free lunches vs paid accounted lunches (talking to someone who worked at the high school food operations in pta meetings) - was that a crazy amount of time was saved in distributing lunches when they didn't have to enforce account status. High schools didn't allocate a long time for lunch and students could spend a quarter to half of their lunch recess in line. So free lunches ended up improving quality of time for all students

I think some states contributed, but I think its also low enough cost that its possible for some districts to go it alone especially if its not every day. It also doesn't have to be just a question of free lunch or not, there is a lot of side possibilities providing fresher foods from local farmers for example - but thats further afield from the original topic of this thread.

not only for some of the bigger support net issues, but smaller ones too like free school lunches for all kids. It a good issue for people to start getting involved in because its smaller scale and local/+ maybe some state

maybe it was a bad idea sending the police to harass and beat the most active young political activists in colleges who dared speak up against genocide - you know the ones that also volunteer to work for the grinding ground get out the vote efforts during presidential campaigns. That's not just killing the turnout on a direct 1:1 basis, that's leveraging the disaffection by at least an order of magnitude or more

I think its difficult to collect data, particularly over time, but a comparison of mixes of demographic data in a geographic region vs mix in the school or district. I predict if one looks at income demographics in that comparison you'll see economic segregation by district which will often correlate to racial segregation.

I wouldn't be surprised, but i also wonder if the wrong conclusions could be made from the metric of black students in predominantly non-white schools. One of the drivers to repress the vote from the GOP is because there are expanding areas where demographics are trending to make non-white groups the majority.
