I'm very much treating Myco as a POC though. But yes this kind of system is the goal.
I'm working on a PR to let openwrt routers auto-mesh with fips. It could live on there or a connected device as a headless myco. Then you nead only 1 or more phones to connect to one of the AP's and you have a route.
There's the 'discovery' tab that shows apps carried by the people you added to your 'circle'.
FYI i pushed a v0.1.0 yesterday which should have much better UI/UX for pairing. (NFC, yay!)

Not yet, but I def intend to allow bringing your own relay.
There's some custom logic involved for the forwarding (flooding) so I hadn't done it yet. (It can be done though)

Probably using Jitsi or some of its audio primitives, being able to address directly will be a great benefit.
We haven't tested with live audio/video streams yet, it might be unreliable still but I'd be excited to see it work!

Yes data will still live at the higher layers. The form of the data is independent of the transport. Even with nostr.
That being said, the combination of Nostr + Blossom + FIPS is fucking powerful and we can do some really cool stuff because information (events + blobs) can now spread like wildfire through these networks.

'lima' works quite fast to create a VM on any Linux/Mac (windows idk)
Then it's the hermes oneliner command and voila. You're set.

i think it's a display issue, rather than a url issue. These urls at least preserve the content addressing. I don't like links that include nip05 identifiers because they'll break eventually. Now even if the client goes away i can still use the url to view the data elsewhere.
npubs in url's should be rendered (visually only) as @username in apps.

FIPS is a Transport-agnostic self-organizing mesh network. So it can run native (Ethernet, wifi, bluetooth, radio) or as an overlay (UDP, tcp, tor) and now Nostr even ;)
It is built with a compatibility layer for IPv6 applications so that regular software doesn't need to be modified to use it.

We will probably put out some explainers soon-ish. We're working hard now to get the early version packaged so it's easier for people to test. Which I think will help understand the protocol better as well
But as a quick answer:
I think iroh iirc, is overlay only and still builds on top of IP.
FIPS is meant to run native, with the overlay being bonus for bootstrapping the Network.
Reticulum comes closest to doing doing what FIPS does, but its focussed more on low-bandwidth applications. FIPS focuses on medium/high bandwidth networks. Additionally FIPS also treats the existing IP stack as a first-class citizen, so that application developers don't have to customize their apps in order to run over FIPS. The way routing works is quite different as well.

No they are different things. Greedy routing only forwards to one peer that is closer to the destination. If none is closer it gets dropped.
With flooding you'd send it to multiple peers at once.

The protocol only uses (local) DNS for backwards compatibility with IP packets so that you don't have to rewrite an application to use FIPS. This is not needed when someone uses the FIPS api directly (not implemented yet).
It's somewhat inspired by NoDNS, but it doesn't use it.
It could be used to decouple some keys. Allowing you to put important keys in cold storage. FIPS keys need to be hot.

there is zero ipv4
the reason you see ipv6 is because of the TUN adapter used for supporting good ol' fashioned TCP/IP traffic.
It uses local DNS to make this work.
How it works:
- Application (ping, curl, browser) makes DNS request for `npubABC...123.fips`
- DNS responds with deterministic IPv6 address (fd00::/8)
- Application does its thing and sends the request
- FIPS TUN adapter intercepts all IPv6 packets for fd00::/8 and turns it into FIPS packets
- FIPS Session protocol packets are sent to `npubABC...123`

That's only if you choose to. npubs are free to generate.
You can (not implemented) easily have dozens of npubs on one device, all looking unrelated to the network. Unlike IP addresses, you can cycle through them over time.
