Which of Shakespeare's plays would you say you like best?
It's been years since I read Shakespeare, though I retain a soft spot for him. I grew up in a home with no books save bibles, a set of encyclopedias, & Reader's Digest. And a big, thick red hardbacked book of Shakespeare plays someone had gifted my parents, but they'd never read. As a teen, I read it cover to cover. I liked the comedies best. Can't really pinpoint one.

I do know the eye colors of my husband and my children. I'm less sure about all my grandchildren and rarely recall anyone else's. I usually only mention my characters' eye colors when it's necessary to the plot. The mages' eye colors often shift when using their powers, for example.

We have this stupid primary system here where everyone is in one big primary instead of Dem and Rethugs having their own. Then the two with the most votes go to the general. There are only 2 Rethugs running while there are a ridiculous number of Dems. Which means the votes for Dems will be split up more than the ones for the thugs, which means we might be screwed. It's beyond frustrating.

Can plots which hinge on a misunderstanding be done well?
I personally tend to get annoyed with plots like this in a serious story but enjoy them in comedies. Overall, I'd say there's a potential to do them well, just as most other topics. Depends on how it's presented.

It was meant to clarify my feelings on the matter. I am not against religion per se. Just because I don't believe doesn't mean I don't support the right to belief. I mean, who am I to say if that stuff is real or not? It's more what actions they take because of that belief that I might take issue with.

Yes! The latter. Which is why I found this creepy. It happened immediately. My son put me on his 365 account after a hard drive issue made me lose all my work. This was years ago and, these days, I don't trust it, so routinely upload anything I don't want to lose to Proton Drive. My 2nd folder is still there & I got my sign made, so all is good, but ....

So here's a creepy thing: I downloaded photos of people killed by ICE into a new folder called "ice" in my pictures folder, saving each photo by their full name. I got to the 4th photo & the system couldn't find the folder to save it in. I looked--new folder is gone. Previous downloaded photos are listed as "removed" in a menu. 🧐 Fuck it, I did it all again, edited each photo & renamed with "cropped" after each name. The new folder is still there as of now. But ... ???

#Today Happy Spring Everyone! We are evidently skipping it altogether down here in the SoCal desert & are in the middle of our first heat wave of the year. I expect many flowers to be popping over the next couple of weeks. My lime tree has a plethora of blossoms & my orange tree is already past that & starting on a new crop of fruit which looks like quite a bit more than last year. 😀 Just got Book I of my latest WIP back from my editor yesterday so I will be mostly offline, lost in my own world.

Is there a country other than your own that influences your creativity?
As a kid, I romanticized UK, largely because of Tolkien (my 1st trip there was to place flowers on his grave.) After a few visits, plus marrying a Brit, I sadly came to view it as another country with it's own issues, yet I still consider it beautiful & treasure my memories. None of my stories are set there. My Dragon Age books are more an echo of classic fantasies influenced by that country.

How did your month go?
I made good progress on my WIP, mostly editing. Got the first manuscript out to my editor, but there are 3 more to go.
Personally, my family has been coping with bad news, but things aren't as dire as they could have been, so there's that.
And, today, we're at war, and I have no fucking clue where my grandson in the military is. But Captain Bone Spurs assured us that people die in war, oh well, so that's okay. 🤬

What's an animated movie you love?
My granddaughter was super into Moana when it first came out. I enjoyed watching that (over & over) with her when I visited one year. As a kid, I loved all the Christmas animations. Especially one you never see any more: Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol. 😀
Otherwise, I am less into animation than I was when I was younger. There's a video series on Nebula called Tale Foundry I enjoy that covers literary topics.

I've still not started the last book I downloaded. However, in the spirit of the season, I went & got the next book on my "to be read" list. The 1st book in that series turned out to be free! It was amusing, to me, because so many of his base is anti anything but straight, so this would hurt him. Which means it will upset him more than the actual bad stories that have come out. Maggie, as a mage, inhabits her body until it reaches a state or age she no longer likes, then utilizes the re-emergence ceremony to create a newer and younger one. She normally doesn't go past around 50-60 but, occasionally, events demand she hang around longer.

My stories take place on another world so "diversity" is a different thing there. I do mention descriptions if they serve the plot, but if a character is human or humanoid (like mages or certain other beings) I let the reader imagine them as they will. My hope is that readers will fill in the blanks to suit themselves.

Happy Halloween! 🎃
This was always my favorite holiday. Years ago, I lived in a neighborhood where kids got driven in from all over to trick or treat & it was a blast. I had decorations, a witch hat (plus extras for anyone visiting at that time,) & Pandora blasted a Halloween playlist. I had a little rat terrier in costume & she loved it.
No one comes to where I live now, but, some years, I travel to my son's & take my granddaughter out.

It happens in many professions where you are helping other living beings, like teaching, health care, social work, and my past field--zookeeping. You never feel like you can do enough for those more vulnerable than you and you know your employers, by and large, don't care or have other priorities. I don't know the answer to this situation.

There's one who keeps returning to the same bad situation, even when he gets chances to escape. Takes him centuries to realize how wrong he's been. Of course, even when he finally leaves, they manage to track him, so can't blame him entirely. Although he could have asked for help sooner.

Everything tracked surprisingly well (pats self on back) except for that one earlier MC, who, through some brain failure, I'd aged up 2 years past what she was at one event, which changed her age going forward. This isn't evident, does not alter that story. It's not noticeable in the book where that event took place. A reader would have to take the time to plot things out like I just did. 🤦‍♀️ Now I have to re-upload that book everywhere.

Back on track after a glitch. I normally don't use exact dates in my works, tracking time passage by season & phrases like "after 2 weeks ..." And rarely use definite ages. Except for one character, in one book, where she recounts how old she was when certain events happened, & mentions her present age. My current librarian MC keeps meticulous time, her chapter "numbers" are log dates & her story overlaps with all other books ...

I'm long-winded? 😀
I've written poetry & songs in the (far) past. Cannibalized a few for my novels. I don't know that they were very good, mostly teenaged & early 20s angst & spirituality, but, since my MC was enchanting her audiences, I didn't think the quality mattered. It was more about having some concrete examples.
My very first work at age 10 was a short story. I had to write 2 for a class. That's it, I think.

Spirituality?
Mage philosophy reveres taking the "higher path." This permeates their various societies. It is shameful to them not to be honorable (not that everyone is.) They don't have any sort of sky deity, but believe Mother Ardonna (their world) is alive. Tree are Her emissaries.
Human refugees came with a hodge-podge of beliefs. The biggest derived from a mashup of faiths created on a starship which was lost for decades & needed something to maintain order.

If you had to show that a character is a bad person within one scene, how would you do it?
Attacking an MC would probably do it 🤷 This would normally be for a lesser character. My main antagonists, by and large, tend to be more nuanced and work up to their evil. With some, you're not quite sure which way they'll go. With a few, the evil rumors proceed them so, by the time they appear, you're sure.

What always annoyed me was the focus on sex and the ignoring of any actual bad behavior. Like gluttony and greed, leading to allowing anyone to be homeless, hungry, or without health care. Basically they downplayed the real problems Jesus talked about in favor of their sick obsession with other people's sex lives.

I'll check out almost any scifi or fantasy program or movie because there always seems to be a shortage. I often rewatch old favorites because I can't find something new & interesting.

People covered most of the issues, including the sad state of "trad" publishing, the scammers, AI making things worse.
I would like to see indies band together in a more productive way to highlight our shops as viable options. It can be expensive in both time & money to promote on one's own. We all seem so scattered. It's going to take a communal effort to chip away at the big vendor monopoly.

What's your favourite visual art media, either to view or create with?
I don't really have one. I enjoy looking at art in all forms. The only thing I do in that area is take photos with my phone, which I will then crop and try to make better if I want to share them. Sometimes they come out very well. I've used a few for my website and promotions.

What's the hardest thing about gardening?
Around here, the summer heat. It's a challenge to keep everything alive. This year was particularly bad, I lost a few plants that had been doing well for years. It's also hard to do work out there beyond watering & a little trimming early in the morning. I have to wait for Oct or Nov to get anything substantial done. Have yet to have successful vegetables, though flowering plants & cacti can do vey well.

Do you write daily? Why or why not?
Yes, but not all day. I usually do 2, occasionally 3, sessions of at least 2 hours, sometimes more, giving my eyes & brain a rest in between. I don't have any other job so I have the time, and I enjoy it.

What would be a major accomplishment on your current project for this month?
I aim for a chapter a day. The other day, I wrote two, which made me proud, but I normally don't push myself, the words will come if I relax & let them. Just more of the same the rest of this month will do a lot to advance me toward the book's ending. My main goal is to have a finished draft before the new year to send to my editor ideally in Jan or Feb.

How much should a writer read? (2)
Instead, when I need a writing break, I consume media: movies, series, or short indie content on Nebula or youtube. It relaxes me & resets my brain.
I can't bang this drum enough: media art is art
The indies, in particular, obviously put a lot of time, research, & effort in on topics like science, philosophy, literary & cultural critique, short fiction, etc. I follow certain creators online & will watch anything they put out.

How much should a writer read? (1)
As much as is comfortable for them.
I spent the majority of my life reading. Always had a book in my hand, & read widely in a variety of genres & topics, fiction & nonfiction. When I got serious about my own work, my reading plummeted. When I need a break from writing, it can't be another book, my eyes & brain can't focus. Most reading now occurs when I'm unable to write, like on a trip. Last time I read 2 & a half books in a week.
