i don't really see power tools and construction equipment as automation. they are electrical, air- or fuel-powered versions of tools which already existed for centuries or millenia. these tools do not do the work without human being in direct control. the Jacquard loom is really the closest thing to a modern computer, and it's the very thing that caused the Luddites to form their movement, because it deskills workers and turns their labour into a commodity instead of the products of that labour.

i think the question then needs to be, what purpose would computers serve, and how would you build one without replicating the problems of industrial capitalism. there are unquestionably positive non-exploitive uses of computers, but they still have to come from somewhere, and something must be done with them when they no longer work and are irrepairable.

automation has never been liberatory. the Luddites existed because they saw that it would lead to the destruction of cottage craft industry and send workers into waged factory labour. automation and enclosure of the commons led to city populations swelling, emptying and deskilling rural labour, and increasing pollution and the diseases that come with it.
in USA, the cotton gin did not liberate enslaved Black workers. it dispossessed them and sent them north where factory bosses then wouldn't hire them and the mine bosses would only hire them to use them as scabs to increase racism between white and Black workers. that's why ghettos exist.

i think no one is wrong to distrust psychology and psychiatry. read about their history, especially their role in colonialism, slavery, and eugenics. these people might have different reasons for their distrust, but it is by no means wrong to distrust either. i can't say a lot about psychology, but psychiatry is absolutely an ableist pseudo-science made for murdering people who can't pass an IQ test, tries to escape enslavement, or has the wrong shape of skull. an IQ test is a white person test.
it is really harmful to diagnose anyone with a psychiatric condition if you are not a licensed psychiatrist. i often say it's no different from diagnosing cancer without being an oncologist, or doing dental work without being a dentist.
that's why i say "choose different words".
there is also a whole online culture of making memes about "narcissists" which often identify autistic traits, so it's extremely stagmatising not just for people with an actual Narcissist Personality Disorder (NPD) diagnosis, but also harmful to autistic people.
the thing i know people are trying to indentify with these harmful memes is abuse, so "abuse" or "manipulative" are words i use to describe people who are manipulative and abusive.

you'll also get people fired for taking the day off to protest without organising anything. the fact that many bosses supported this one-day strike is far from the norm. if it had been about wages, hours, and working conditions, you can bet they would have fired people or locked them out. calling in sick on your own is not a strike. if you want to call in sick, organise a sick-in, which is another kind of organised direct action where many workers co-ordinate calling in sick on the same day or days.

i've only been in one situation where mass arrest could have happened, but luckily didn't. it was public enough that the cops weren't about to risk whatever social capital they think they have. but i was not going to leave that circle. i came to protect Indigenous land defenders and their sacred fire, so i did not leave just because the police threatened us.
i've been to many protests, strikes, acts of resistance, whatever you want to call them, and that was the first time i ever felt like i could be in danger, but i was there for a purpose and was not going to back down.

i've said it many times before, all workers in engines and munitions factories can stop a war in its tracks if they simply stop working and put their hands in their pockets. sabotaging the equipment so it never works again would also help. read what many people who were swept up in the Palmer raids had to say about what they found when they were exiled to Lenin's Russia. Emma Goldman is a good source for that. Alexander Berkman was there too, and also had similar things to say.
George Orwell's book Homage To Catalonia is a good account of who was doing what during the Spanish civil war. if Stalin was a communist, then why did he and his followers help fascists win at every turn? if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then we don't say it's an elephant.
pay attention to the actions of the Bolsheviks from the beginning of the Social Democratic Party of Russia, to what Russia looks like today, and ask "is this what a stateless, moneyless society built on mutual aid and solidarity looks like?"
find out why Hitler's party was named "national socialist", and ask "how can a stateless, moneyless society built on mutual aid and solidarity somehow involve nation states anyway, and what did nazis ever do which amounts to liberation via mutual aid and solidarity?" and you'll find an enormous contradiction which tells you the term is used in bad faith.

language may not be static, but we're not talking about words which can be frivolously used in different ways. it's important to not use these kinds of words carelessly.
words with baggage are why i used the example of "don't say the U-word" when organising a union, if you have a bunch of fellow workers who might bristle when they hear that. in that situation, it's necessary to show people what the word means, instead of saying it out loud and then having to explain yourself, so that they will come to their own conclusion that they were wrong and can change their own mind.

it's a desktop environment (DE). it's the K DE. nearly every program made with its development kit has a name that starts with k. why? idk.
you can't change it in Windows, so it might be a very unfamiliar idea. it's what sets up your desktop with a task bar, window decorations, system tray, etc that you expect to see, but you can change it in any way you like, and even change DE to a different program if you like. KDE is "recommended for beginners" but it's really memory-heavy for no good reason, and other DEs exist which do the same things just as well in far less resources. Gnome is the other most popular DE for linux. i prefer Cinnamon, or MATE, both of which are forks of Gnome 2, which preserves that Win95 feel instead of the modern "locked down af, rounded corners on everything" feel of Gnome 3.

i can't help but to draw very clear parallels between what is happening to Palestinians and what was done to Indigenous children in Canada. it's not even entirely correct to say "was" because family separation looks different now. instead of being threatened with death by starvation, now the state separates Indigenous families by accusing them of abuse which is a direct result of generational trauma caused in part by the original policy of family separation.

times like this are why Oi Polloi have a special place in my heart and mind. there are many punk bands who are direct an honest with their feelings about fascism but Oi Polloi tell you exactly why it's important to fight, and to live to fight another day. they're not afraid to come out and say "don't fuck around, always bash back".

if you would have been alone, as in didn't know anyone there, you may be best off staying at home.
i often miss marches and protests, but i tell myself "the whole thing does not and will not hinge on my individual presence, and if it ever does, i'm in the wrong movement."
it's really not a good idea to fight fascists alone, if you can avoid it. when the whole thing is over, one of the most dangerous times is when everyone is going home. always make sure to have friends or some kind of safety escort, to go home with you. they will attack you when you are alone, and it did happen to people i knew in 2017, in Ottawa.
