Land is complex here. It is the building regs and planning permissions that are the real issue. Example is Greenbelt land is not permitted to be built on.
If it were, I’m sure we would have more houses. It’s a conflict between protecting open areas, preserving history and heritage, and building more homes.
The land changing hands doesn’t do much to address that IMO.
Food is largely imported. What farms we do have include many family owned businesses. Not quite a cooperative, but far from big business.
I do agree they need to be defended though and am not against subsidising them via tax breaks ( ironically that is a big issue here recently ) and the reason for that in my head is national security.

There are some simple realities here. Before they ‘allowed’ it to happen, they were impoverished. They joined global trade, recognising that isolationism was a death sentence for the Communist dream.
Rather than allow it to happen, they needed it. Now, ofc they would rather be on top, but there was no allowing of anything by them. They had no option.
The irony here is that without global trade routes being open to all, the second largest and aging population, with huge energy import and food requirements, might start to struggle a little.
I’m sure in their head they can capture all of the productivity of the country and carry on, but the picture of global supply chains is complex, convoluted, and spans a globe that needs open trade routes to keep that system sustained.
That is what they got from it. That is what they needed - and still need.

It wasn’t “allowed” to happen, they wanted in. That was the whole point in the post WW2 order. The US protects the trade routes, and then everyone is able to trade without needing to defend their own supply chains.
They then use those Dollars obtained by sending stuff to the US, to buy other things they need.
You need to see the historical context. By the time they joined the world in economic trade, it was clear economic activity was the future for them.
Ironically, isolating yourself from the world was seen as a flaw, not a plus.
We have just witnessed the beginning of the end for that era, and that is a far bigger problem for the world.

The sad truth is, they also break many norms. The difference is they are complaining about the very thing they would do if they could.

We live in a world without any enforcement to those international laws. What we have started to see happen is the recognition that not breaking them too means you are limiting yourself.

IMO America took the baton from us Brits, and had a more ‘delicate’ way of approaching empire. ‘Soft power’ is the term commonly used, and it is close enough.
The problem is ( again IMO ) that the idea was the US guarantees security to trade, and each country ‘comes onboard’ to join in the prosperity.
Unfortunately it became apparent that not everyone was happy with ‘coming along’ and they wanted to be number one.
There is some complexity and context missing there obviously, but the big picture is that the US has had to hold back that desire to overtake them mostly with said soft power, and all we are seeing now I think, is the realisation that it isn't enough. Sometimes the king has to show his power.
It became apparent a long time ago that the US was going to grow tired of granting security of global trade, only for some to use that ‘space’ to overtake them. Couple that with an ideology of others that want nothing else than to be ‘king’ of it all, and what we see now was an inevitability.
It doesn't matter who pushed what button when, only that it was always going to come.
Bitcoin never fixed this bit.

My stepdaughter had that. Various other complications over time meant having one of her ovaries and tubes removed too.
