People are very respectful with 110 lbs of brown Labrador tethered to me. None of them would bite anybody and the goldens just look fluffy and cute. But Baloo, by her size alone, commands respect. Also she barks just once at people entering my house. So I feel much safer with her

Well now no matter how afraid someone is I refuse to be alone without my dogs, at least one of them, and if they have a phobia then they need to not be in my house and send another person. Sounds harsh but it's how it has to be for my safety.

Yes, exactly this. I used to get my medication at a specific pharmacy because they had really good delivery. The driver, a very large man, told me that he was afraid of dogs and could I please leave my dogs inside when I met him to get my medication from him. I tried to be respectful of his phobia, so I left my dog inside and that is when he tried to kiss me and put his hands on me. I switched my medication to a different pharmacy and everyone was telling me that I should have reported him, but I was too afraid because I am a deafblind woman who lives alone, and when men get told no, especially when they get reprimanded for behaviors they believe they are entitled to do, they can take revenge and often times that revenge comes in the form of things they can get away with. And he knew that I had dogs and a really great way to hurt me would be to hurt one of my dogs and I was legitimately afraid of what he would do so I did not tell anyone and nobody understood why I didn't come forward. Just to say that this kind of thing happens all the time and it is constantly dismissed or pushed under the rug.

Yes! This. I try to be very transparent about my need for solitude and at the beginning the person I'm dating seems to be fine with it except in reality when things don't change, they are not OK and I don't know if I'm not being clear enough, but I'm not sure how much more clear I can be when I say we are never going to live together and I do not want you sleeping in my bed at night unless it's a very special occasion like once or twice a year. I think there is this idea that I'm going to change if they just love me enough or something and it's exhausting.

I have also always been the one to end things. Usually because I'm feeling smothered. People wanting things I can't give like living together and so much of my time/energy. My need for a lot of solitude always ends up being a problem. So I've just decided I'm too old and cranky and set in my autistic ways to try any more. Also I really enjoy living alone and doing my life on my terms.

Person in my DM's, "hey did you see XYZ thing so and so posted?" No, no actually I did not, and do you know why? Because there were at least 5 hashtags at the very beginning of said post and I'm reading everything on a 40 cell braille display, which means I get 40 characters at once before I need to scroll.... So if you choose to put more than say, 3 hashtags in the beginning of your post I'm probably moving on because my time for spending on the interwebs is not limitless... people are, of course free to do what they want but... If you are using hashtags you obviously want engagement of some kind. So putting them at the end might be the better bet from an accessibility standpoint. #JustSaying

Woke up and checked my phone as one does and just saw the news about Jesse Jackson. I remember when he ran for president and I was a tiny kid, the only blind kid in my town, in a family of sighted folks and I remember seeing him on a stage full of white dudes and thinking how brave he was for being the only black person in a group of white folks, and yet he was still up there, striving to make the world a better place, and having to deal with people's racism. And yet he was trying to make change anyway, and speaking out. It really inspired me and made me feel less alone. It taught me that even though you are the one different person, amongst a sea of otherwise similar folks you shouldn't let their narrow mindedness keep you from speaking truth. RIP Reverend Jackson.

I have mushroom popcorn and I have an air pop machine and people told me it might not pop in it because it might not be hot enough, but it does fine, but it is much crunchyier than regular popcorn just to let you know.

I have no idea what convinced me to make biscuits and gravy this morning because cleaning up from cooking all of that felt like it took a dog's age! But it's done now and there are many garlic cheese biscuits left over for use with dinner which I think is going to involve tomato soup because it is freaking cold! I realize that tomorrow is Imbolc so I'm going to wait and make my stew and beer bread then. Today is for reading books, playing with dogs, and perhaps cookie baking… in between breathing treatments and quick trips outside to throw the ball and freeze. 🥶💪🎾💨🐾🤟🏻

There's a special place in hell for people who post the closed captions in all capital letters. When you are reading braille, whether a letter is capitalized or not is indicated by a capital sign, and if everything is in THERE are multiple capital signs that take up a bunch of space on the braille display and when you're working with only 40 cells and eight of those cells are taken up with information relating to capitalization, it is incredibly frustrating! ETA found the calendar, the website however keeps forcibly changing my address so I can't actually buy it! Yes starting my Saturday with inshitification. One of my chores for today is to find a braille calendar for 2026. I've been buying the Peanuts ones from National Braille Press but they don't have markings for full/new/quarter moons. I remember there was a company who made a calendar with those dates marked each month with a tactile symbol and I'd I'll like to buy that calendar. Now I just need to remember who makes them. If anyone knows I'd be grateful. I will probably do some googling once I exercise. ... thats after I drink this iced pumpkin spiced latte.

A friend stopped by because she is my junk food angel of mercy. She also brought a friend for Phee. This toy has been in my friend's house for 2 days surrounded by all the smells of her dogs plus Baloo and Callisto because thats where they are right now. So phee is in love! She is currently sleeping it with it tucked under her chest like a dragon lying on its hoard.

Ok I just did a very cool nerdy thing. One of my student is getting Meta glasses for the holidays and the family asked me to pair them and get them set up and working. So I had the student's phone and the glasses but I had to get the phone set up with a braille display so I could use it. This is not really doable as a full deafblind person but I figured it out! I enabled live captions on my phone. Stacked the student's phone on top of my phone, put the braille display I was going to pair with the students phone in pairing mode, then flicked and did the gestures on the student's phone going through the menus and reading the captions on my braille display. The voiceover on the students phone spoke the live captions piped it to my braille display and I was able fully by myself to get another display connected to the students phone! DAMN I win today!

OK, I don't know how much of this is able to be detected visually because I don't know how it looks but right now I'm looking at a photograph of a Bee which is something that of course I know about bees I have had bees land on me and of course I have been stung by bees, but I've never actually been able to touch a bee. So this is the first time in my life I've ever been able to look at a bee.

It's here!!! I can't decide if I want to look at pictures or read a book! Why this is a big deal is because all of my other braille displays have one line so if you are a person who can see imagine that you only get between 20 and 40 characters before you need to scroll on one line. That is how I read all of the time. This display has a one line display at the bottom, yes, but at the top there is a larger display that is 30 x 10 that lets you read multiple lines at once or… Look at pictures! This is life-changing for me! #DeafBlind

So probably opening up a can of worms here but I'm noticing something in the blind community and am curious if it's just me. But it's about AI and the use of AI to describe things/to get access to information. Please understand that I know AI is often wrong and I understand the many problems with AI, however it has been my experience that the people most vocal about not using AI, are the people with the most access to sighted help I'm not saying 24 7's sighted help but consistent, reliable, as in every day at least for a short period, sighted help. This is privilege, and if you are privileged to have access to that kind of consistent help, I may just gently suggest that it is easier to have a hardline stance about how you will, or won't use AI.... OK I'm ready to get my head taken off now.

Was making groceries because dogs were out of food and decided to get sick person food in the form of premade Bob Evan's mashed potatoes and Aldi brand Salisbury steak. First of all, for next time I must remember that I think both of these dishes were made by folks who don't believe in spies. I have some leftovers and you'd best believe my black pepper grinder is going to get a workout before I put the pan of leftovers back in the oven because wow... Also garlic, it will def be improved with garlic. Really I probably should have just put on my big girl pants and made a curry. But I can't buy premade curry because it always has fish sauce or something in it that will kill me if i eat it and even though making curry is not rocket surgery, i still don't have enough spoons for it. So mashed potatoes and Salisbury steaks with extra pepper and garlic it shall be. I have another order of groceries coming because Aldis didn't have the stuff I need for a bbq, like charcoal. And because these steroids are making me so freaking hot and since it's still 80 damned degrees out there, I did add some dairy free peppermint chocolate ice cream.

Because I'm the Deafblind friend in our friend group I'm the designated car reader because I can read without looking! Which the driver can't do for obvious reason and many sighted people get sick if they read for long periods in a moving car even as passengers. So I read. Sometimes I do dramatic reading of people's breakup text or text family arguments. Sometimes I read the news. Today I'm reading about the REN fair next month! Yay I will finally be able to wear my crocheted viking beard and mustache! Anyway I should open a business. The car reader. You pay me to sit in your car and read whatever you want, as long as you provide it before hand in an accessible format!
