idk, would probably work, but is not really a solution (at least for me). They need lots of cash to do what they do and donating relevant amounts in 1k-chunks is .... semi-optimal.
Guess I don't have much of a choice, either that, or not donating at all.

When they started accepting btc-donations, they just had a bitcoin-address shown on their website,
but then <someone> decided to donate an amount that prolly was too big for them to handle. They got scared, removed the address the next day and came back a couple of months later with coinbase and BitPay as payment providers.
I wish they would do it on their own again, but I guess they won't.

My start9-node has been running btc, eletcrs, lnd and more smoothly for about a year now and the only thing i can actually complain about is: Tor-only and not even tunnelsats will do as a workaround.
But they promised to give us options, so we wait.

Again, it depends.. on your skills and preferences.
Easiest way would be to just install startOS from start9, or umbrel.
I run both, kinda like startOS more, although it does everything (and i mean EVERYTHING) thru Tor, which is quite slow even on .local
devs say clearnet-options will come soon™, so we wait.
In the meantime i installed umbrel, to try it out and get clearnet-connections.
But if you wanna learn you can build and install everything yourself on a basic ubuntu or something, done that a couple of times too.
It's no rocket-science, if you can read tutorials and follow instructions you're good to go.

Any #noderunner using #peerswap to manage channel-liquidity? Worth looking into it, or am I wasting my time waiting for the Elements Core IBD?
Right now I'm using Aqua wallet (to avoid lots of small on-chain UTXOs), but the fees add up quickly and while I'm setting up a new node anyway, I thought maybe p2p-swaps would be a better option.
What do you think?

And yes, you are cheaper then other LSPs, at least for the "smaller" channels, comparing 10m-channel prices there's others cheaper than you and only because your 10m channels are twice the price of 5x2m channels. I said it gets worse, the bigger the channel is.

I get that (A+B), but the funds-at-risk are the same in both described situations!
To open 2x2m channels you need 4m funds and I pay you 10k sats,
to open 1x4m channel you need 4m funds and I pay you 15k sats.
The on-chain fees are obviously higher on the 2x2m channels option, yet it is cheaper for me to buy them instead of 1x4m.
That's what doesn't make sense to me.

Yes and yes.
Sending sats to themselves is basically what people do when they "rebalance" channels (and not loop/swap out/in sats from off- to on-chain, or Liquid).
Opening a channel to your 2nd node does only connect your 2 nodes, if none of them has any other channels, you're in the same position as before.

It makes sense especially if you want to receive. To receive you need inbound liquidity on the channel, if you open a (unbalanced) channel yourself you have outbound liquidity and can't receive anything before you sent something out first.

So, on one hand you say "the bigger the better", on the other hand buying your channels is more expensive, the bigger they get. Like, for 3months 2x2m channels are 10k sats, but 1x4m channel is 15k, 50%+ and it gets worse the bigger the channel is.
I'm not complaining, the prices still look good, I was just wondering why that is, because in my experience it is cheaper to open just one channel, even if you batch-open the 2 and the needed funds are the same in both cases.
What am I missing?

I was installing a couple of bitcoin-/lightning nodes on old laptops lately to play around and test stuff.
One of the first things todo is always to disable the slepp/suspend/hibernate modes, which is basically just one command like
$ sudo systemctl mask sleep.target suspend.target hibernate.target hybrid-sleep.target
But what I missed twice now was to also ignore the LidSwitch, which is something you don't really notice until you look at your cpu-load.
So, if you're like me and run nodes like umbrel or start9 (otherwise you probably know what you'r doing) on laptops, check ur logind.conf and uncomment/edit the HandleLidSwitch entries
$ sudo nano /etc/systemd/logind.conf
[Login]
HandleLidSwitch=ignore
HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=ignore
HandleLidSwitchDocked=ignore
My cpu-load went down from ~80+% to ~30% just doing that, which not only consumes less energy, but also gives me room to install more shit I don't actually need.
Just thought I'd tell ya.

I had my fair share of troubles with umbrelOS too. Running on a rather old cpu (dualcore-i3) it was also extremly slow and laggy. Works a lot smoother since I did the last update a couple of days ago. I'll see how long that lasts.
Ubuntu will also work of course, it's a little more work to hack all those commands into your keyboard and keep everything up to date, while you just have to click some buttons and wait in umbrel.
I'm always running electrs in between my BTC- and LN-node, need it for my SPV-clients anyway, but it should work without too.
To lower you initial costs you can save a lot on fees by batch-opening multiple channels in one on-chain-Tx, using tools like BoS, or LNDg.
I could also open up a channel to get you some inbound liquidity and maybe send some sats thru it to pay for your first outbound-channels and get you started.
Just gimme a wink when you're ready.

If it's worth it depends a lot on what you want to achieve.
Wanna be your own bank, independent, in control? Yes, it's totally worth it.
Wanna earn sats thru fees? Maybe, if you're up for the task and know what you're doing.
My node's been running ~10months now and I'm still deep in the red, mostly due to some quite expensive forced closures, but even without those I would still be in the red and I'm ok with it. I charge very little to even zero fees, so I'm probably a bad example when it comes to earnings.
For how to start after reading:
probably by choosing some hardware you can spare/afford and/or looking into personal preferences and available options.
Like, wanna do everything yourself from baremetal, just buy some pre-build box, or something in between by installing pre-packaged solutions like umbrel, or start9?
Stuff to think about before you even start.
And then just do whatever you decided.
It's no rocket-science (although it feels like it sometimes).

I'd like that (and contribute to a bounty) too.
Zeus connected to Start9 using Lightning Node Connect works ok-ish, but is still kinda slow and crashes a lot.
I've no idea how to install Tailscale on start9 to even try if it would work any better,
so some easy solution like direct integration in apps and a Start9 package (at least while there's no clearnet-support) would be much appreciated.

Well, keeping the whole thing afloat is one,
earning fees another, although you need a really well connected node to get anywhere near profits.
The most important (at least for me) is: Not your keys, not your coins.
If you don't run your own node, you're back to trusting a third party again.

For sats to flow thru lightning you need channels.
To receive sats you need channels with inbound liquidity,
to send sats you need outbound liquidity.
Let's say you fire up a node.
If you want to receive sats, someone else needs to open up a channel to you so you get inbound liquidity.
If you want to send sats (and haven't received any before), you need to open up a channel to some other node so you get outbound liquidity.
To open/close a channel means to do an on-chain-transaction, so it can be quite costly.

This one seems really slow to me, at this rate it'll need another 3 days to sync.
It's not the fastest machine in the world (i3-6006U, 8GB, SATA SSD), but that's what I had and didn't use for anything else.
Maybe if I stare at it long enough, it'll move faster, like the observer effect?

To get an idea of the fees to go from LN to BTC and back you could check some swap-services, like swap.deezy.io or boltz.exchange.
If you run your own BTC- and LN-Node it's basically just another on-chain tx to go either in or out of lightning-channels,
so all that matters is the current mempool and sats/vB situation.

Depends a lot on the amount you wanna to buy.
Small amount->LN
Big amount->on-chain
LN
It's ok to send amounts as tiny as 1sat via lightning, the bigger the amount the worse LN works, at least in my experience.
I've never had a problem sending 1, 21, 420, 210k, 1m sats, sending a couple of million though I often had to try a few times til it worked.
But that's expected, on every hop there needs to be enough channel liquidity to route the payment through.
on-chain
It's ok to pay a $5 fee for a $5000 on-chain tx, 0.1% is not that bad,
but if you just want to send/receive $5, that would be a 100% fee you probably don't want to pay.
It also depends on what you wanna do with it, like, do you wanna use it to zap nostriches, or buy/pay for stuff?
Or does it go straight to cold storage for the next decade?

I used an old laptop (with a broken keyboard) to setup #Start9 after watching one of your other videos about it a few weeks ago.
Been running btc-nodes for more than a decade, but never looked into lightning until then.
Now my node routed about 50million sats already and I'm waiting for the mempool to clear up so I can open moar channels.
Oh and I found out about Nostr thru #Start9 (there's a relay and client in its marketplace) which piqued my interest.
