Zwischenschritt... Ja, das halte ich für das Problem. Wenn Signal irgendwann weg ist, gehen Leute zu WhatsApp, gar Telegram (ziemlich shady) weil das bequem ist und "funktioniert doch einfach".
Wir werden es nicht beliebig oft schaffen die Leute zu was besserem zu bewegen.
Viele Leute machen dann beim nächsten Wechsel nicht mehr mit und dann: Kontaktverlust.
Wir müssen da ganz vorsichtig sein, anders als wir Nerds wollen die Leute sich nicht den ganzen Tag damit beschäftigen.

Wenn der Präsident der USA jetzt anfängt europäische Länder zu sanktionieren oder anderweitig zu blockieren... wie sicher ist es dann, dass in den nächsten drei Jahren immer noch Signal in der EU erreichbar und nutzbar sein wird?
Dadurch, dass die Signal Foundation in den USA sitzt, sind die immerhin voll der Kontrolle der USA unterworfen, auch tolle Krytpographie ändert nichts daran, dass der Stecker der Server in einer Wand in den USA steckt.

People set a name for a multi user chat. That new can only be used by one user. You just type that name. No @ required.
I can just type "Hey Joe_42, how's it going with that project?"
And that hypothetical person Joe_42 would get a notification.
It's very intuitive, really.

It can set the focus, but the dev does not know what values to set. That's the missing piece. If anyone could help out here, the Pixel 3a would make much better photos already.
Maybe @npub1cc9…zrg3 could mention that in the next weekly, this might then be noticed by someone with the right knowledge.

Ja, WhatsApp ist ein hochskalierter XMPP-Server mit ein paar proprietären Erweiterungen und etwas Überwachung dazu.

A recent update in Debian broke usage of the compose key in @npub154r…alal and @npub1u4t…7ldx and other GTK software. I have no idea what's going on, but I can no longer type "ü" or some other characters. :(
I'm not even sure where I would report such a bug.

Falls hier jemand bisher gerne Email selber hosten wollte, aber keine Zeit in Recherche stecken wollte, dann empfehle ich mal Stalwart anzuschauen.
Ich hab mir gestern Abend einen Email-Server damit eingerichtet und war nach 10 Minuten fertig. Hab direkt noch migriert, weil so einfach war.
- extrem simpel
- sagt einem welche DNS-Records
- IMAPS, SMTPS, JMAP (!), CardDAV, CalDAV, WebDAV und Sieve
- Spam-Filter ist eingebaut
- In Rust geschrieben.

Also, why interoperability with XMPP?
We need to close the gap so that we can be much stronger together. If Matrix and XMPP were really interopable, it would be a huge pool of people to contact and we coud actually reach WORLD DOMINA... I mean... decentralised comms for everyone. :)

Nice seeing that feedback and criticism and issues are not ignored at @npub1m9z…whzq like it seemed, they actually are aware and they want to improve. Nice.
Ironically they should improve their communication. Really glad I watched this video, changed my thoughts towards #Matrix to be a bit more positive.
Still think we need more:
- interoperability with #XMPP
- bug/performance fixes
- server migration

Oh and the privacy features!
XMPP can hide IDs in group chats, making it really hard to scrape IDs and spam.
I wish that simple feature would come to Matrix.
And setting a nick when joining and completely hiding the global nick.
Being able to hide the profile picture in public chats and only share it with contacts.
I don't want to show my face to the whole internet, nor do I want everyone on there to be able to contact me easily.
If those improvements are made -> fanboy.

The other large issue, for me personally, is lacking interop with the other open decentralised protocol XMPP.
I run Bifrost, but it seems abandoned and buggy and I will probably have to switch it off soon, as it does not work well.
There was Parsee, which was hosted on a git that's no longer in existence, but still listed on matrix.org as alpha. That looked promising.
To win me back as a fan, personally:
- it must be more performant
- it must be interoperable with XMPP

Also, I agree "it sucks" is unhelpful.
But also feel like feedback is often just ignored, unfortunately. Hope the community interactions will improve, love the ejabberd community as a positive example.
My issues are mostly not even the spam (I just disabled invites), but mostly sloooow performance. Otherwise I'm fine with it all.
Sometimes Fractal neeeds 30 minutes to sync up when opening, it's written in Rust and should be fast enough.
I suspect Element would be slower.

I'll gladly give info and hope it will improve so that I can keep my server around and spread the word again. :)
- very very slow performance of Synapse and no migration path to a faster implementation
- messages that cannot be decrypted
- rooms I cannot leave as the client says the room does not exist (must be a server issue, as it is regardless of the client I use)
I'd happily stick around if I could just migrate from Synapse to Conduit, but there's no tool (I lack skills)

I deeply regret having brought more than 3k users to Matrix.
This has just hindered us from adopting something better that works well. I also wanted to love Matrix and advertised it for a couple years, always thinking "Yeah, it's new, it will get better", but the issues have always stayed.
The people behind Matrix are nice and I wish them the best. Should the issue get solved in the future: I'll gladly try adopting it again. :)

Seeing posts like this, I simply had disabled invites on my server before it could spread to me, so I've not seen anything.
I'll keep the server for now, while migrating everything to ejabberd. It's got WIP Matrix support, so if I really have to, I'll be able to join a Matrix room, but everything else will be XMPP. There IDs can be hidden in a chat, making the spread of spam much more difficult, just because IDs cannot be scraped as easily.
Really don't wanna see THAT.

Oh and ejabberd seems to be easy to get connected to an SSO setup, whereas Prosody does not seem to have a whole lot support, though I've yet to try that myself.

(WhatsApp is just ejabberd with a proprietary login method and proprietary clients and extensions, basically.)
ejabberd is much more complex and the documentation is sometimes lacking. If you want to have a Matrix transport, have a look at ejabberd. Not quite ready yet, but looks promising and requires less resoures than a Matrix server, especially client side.
(I also run Synapse and it's horribly inefficient).
If none of those apply to your use-case, just use whatever you prefer.

Let me see...
Prosody for a small deployment for yourself and a couple of users. It's simple, but does not use all cores, but that's fine for a small set up.
Snikket for the same reasons, but especially if you have less technical users that you want to just send invite links to and have something that just works without wanting to optimise the config, it just works.
ejabberd if you want to configure a lot more things, scale to massive setups using multiple CPU cores.

It's really getting time for #LinuxOnMobile.
We need to get large enough to be unable to ignore at some point.
FOSS apps for everything.
First they tried shoving a ticket app for public transport down my throat, now bank wants to replace 2FA with an app that just does not have a 2nd factor.
I will not take your trash. I don't want your tracking, I don't want Google, Microsoft or Apple to know everything I do.
Just imagine Stasi in Eastern Germany had had all that!

Getting my new/old Pebble watch (Time Steel) working with Mobian was far easier than I thought.
Literally took me less than five minutes.
If anyone's interested, I'll do a writeup, otherwise I will soon start working on packaging the UBPorts application for Debian/Mobian (I can now even control the music on my laptop! Skipping song without opening the laptop, lol).
It also works really well. Some minor graphical issues in the app, probably just misisng some icons.

First I ported Mobian to the Pixel 3a, then I plugged my solar panel into it.

You know why* I ported a Linux distribution to a phone that has just turned 5 years old?
Because otherwise these devices would have become trash. Literally.
Even though they're perfectly fine.
Support ended. They are now "End of Life". Seriously, just imagine someone would tell this to your parents. "Sorry, but no food for you, as you are end of life."
WTF. What an abomination.
This way some great hardware can live on.

- tinyalsa ITP
- q6voiced, getting that ready for ITP

- add udev rule for vibration, probably to qcom-phone-utils
- create a script that sets the Bluetooth MAC on boot
