This is one of my favorite Japanese bands, mostly #jazz but also known for their funky groove. The three founders and principals, MiMi, Emi and Rina, are seasoned session musicians that formed Tokyo Groove Jyoshi in 2018. I am aware of the unemployment data, especially the high levels of youth unemployment. Thus, the whole ‘lying flat’ phenomena. University grads not able to find jobs, and having to rely on the gig economy. All exacerbated by the property sector collapse, the conundrum of state-owned-industry debt, and the bankruptcies of local governments. China has it problems, its purges, and many challenges ahead. The CCP has made significant mistakes, especially in managing growth and the economy. These will need to be addressed. That said, the project is moving forward and iterating imo.

#China is an authoritarian, surveillance state ruled by a one powerful man. That said, the Chinese Communist Party under Xi’s leadership seems to legit try to do its best for the country and people. There are glaring empire tendencies on the downside - thinking of Tibet, Taiwan and the Uyghurs - but on the upside the government/party has lifted a ton of people out of poverty and propelled the country into global tech, automotive, economic and alternative energy leadership roles. Most recently, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday called for mobilizing the whole society to actively participate in afforestation, stressing that a sound ecological environment is shared by all and requires the joint efforts of all. Yes, I agree - point taken. However in my mind I see the #Surveillance buildout more like an aggressive, invasive plant that spreads its tendrils across any available technology platform. I can’t kill the plant, nor really stop its spread; but…I can damn well cut any new tendrils I encounter encroaching on what space I have left. I don’t hate it, or much of anything. Takes too much effort. I just think it’s ugly, as are most of Gaudi’s works. Just my contrarian opinion. I’ve seen his Barcelona creations in person, and I was not impressed by any of his designs. I would describe his work as ‘eyesores’ rather than ‘joyful’.

I did label the toot as an ‘unpopular opinion’ in my defense. I’ve seen most of his work around the city, and none of it made sense to me. The frightful apartment building and the gaudy park… I guess I’m also just surprised at how much love and respect he gets from the locals. Barcelona is an unusual city, so preoccupied with modernity, when the rest of Spain is absorbed with preserving the past. It’s a Catalan thing I suppose.

Unpopular opinion #architecture - La Familia Sagrada basilica in Barcelona has a hideous exterior design - common to the world’s worst, but still celebrated, architect: Gaudi. I’ve visited twice, decades apart - and though the interior has its moments, the exterior is, imho, simply ugly, a blight on the city like most of Gaudi’s work.
