My blog's pipeline spent more time installing dependencies than actually building the site. Two commits and one Containerfile later, that step is gone entirely.

I have steam am Freitag aus den Paket-Quellen installiert, ja:
pacman -S steam
Das hat auch erwartungsgemäß dann einfach funktioniert und war sehr sehr sehr einfach 🤷🏻‍♂️
Ich sehe Flatpak als deutlichen Rückschritt und das nicht nur aus einem Grund.
Das was arch Linux gemacht hat mit dem AUR (oder fedora mir copr, oder Ubuntu mit ppa) war die deutlich bessere Lösung für das Problem, fehlender Pakete. Weil das erlaubt eine ähnliche Flexibilität, fügt sich aber nahtlos in das bestehende System ein.
Mir kommen Flatpak jedenfalls nicht auf meine Systeme. Die sind ein schlechter Kompromiss.

Ja, es ist einfacher geworden. „Easy“ würde ich aber nicht ganz unterschreiben.
Ich ernähre mich pflanzlich und im privaten funktioniert das auch völlig problemlos. Im beruflichen Umfeld als Dienstreisender erlebe ich aber immer wieder Momente, in denen es durchaus noch sehr schwierig ist:
- Eingeladene Geschäftsessen in Restaurants, die keine veganen Speisen anbieten.
- Hotel-Aufenthalte im ländlichen Raum mit sehr begrenztem gastronomischen Angebot.
- In Teilen von Osteuropa und auf dem Balkan ist vegane Kost oftmals noch sehr schlecht verfügbar.
Ja, es ist einfacher geworden, aber es gibt noch Stellen, wo ich mir wünschen würde, dass es besser und einfacher ist.

mittelfristig sehe ich, dass eine zeitnahe medizinische Versorgung nur noch dann gewährleistet wird, wenn man als Selbstzahler eine Privatärztliche Behandlung in Anspruch nimmt. Habe ich jetzt 2x machen müssen, da die Alternative > 8 Monate Wartezeit gewesen wäre.
Der demographische Wandel fängt ja jetzt erst an so richtig rein zu kicken und die Anzahl an Praxen wird in den nächsten Jahren weiter stark schrumpfen, da vielmals keine Nachfolger gefunden werden.

für jemanden, der im Desktop-Linux Bereich eine einfache Benutzererfahrung möchte, würde ich Fedora eher nicht empfehlen. Da ist die Zielgruppe schon eher tech-Enthusiasten und Entwickler.
Mint ist tatsächlich nicht mehr so toll (waren vor 10 Jahren mal, sind aber ziemlich zurückgefallen)
Endeavors OS oder POP! OS wären meiner Meinung nach eher aussichtsreiche Kandidaten.

Heute zum Ostersonntag Vegane Waffeln gebacken 🧇
Rezept:
- 1/2 Würfel Hefe
- 200g Zucker
- 200ml Mandelmilch
- 200g Pflanzenfett (Margarine oder Öl, ich habe 50/50 genommen)
- 2 EL Vanillezucker
- 100ml Sprudelwasser
- 1 TL Salz
Alle Zutaten mit dem Handmixer glatt rühren, 30 Minuten ruhen lassen und dann im Waffeleisen goldbraun ausbacken.
Sehr sehr lecker mit Ahornsirup 😋

Kleiner Lichtblick am Abend der BTW2025:
So wie es aussieht, könnte es realistisch passieren, dass eine Stillstands-Koalition zwischen CXU/SPD nicht auf die benötigten 316 Sitze kommt und eine dritte Partei notwendig ist.
Das würde für einen Kanzler Herrn Schmerz mehr Zugeständnisse erfordern und ist damit zumindest ein kleiner Lichtblick.
Das Ergebnis ist allerdings trotzdem eine Katastrophe!

I'm extremely satisfied with the current state of #Fedora Linux.
#KDE Plasma 6.3 came super quickly after the upstream release and the Kernel 6.13 (which is still a pre-release version from Koji) made my AMD APU (AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U) a lot more stable and robust.
All power-modes are now working perfectly, the iGPU performs super well, suspend works reliably and overall it's rock solid now!

I have a Lenovo T14s as my personal laptop, running Fedora Linux on it. I’ve never heard the fans, unless compiling larger chunks of software or when stressing the device with complex tasks like gaming.
Now I’ve got the same device model from one of my customers, but it’s running Windows 11. The fan is spinning *all the time* and constantly switching between annoyingly loud and insanely loud. Even when the system is just idling with just a chat application and one browser window open.
How can an operating system be such a resource hog and why thefuq is this so widely used?! My power meter socket shows almost triple the average draw that my personal device with Linux is consuming.
Tonight, I’ll probably dream about those constant fan noises *brrrrrr* :facepalm:

Volle Zustimmung. Ich sehe das Risiko auch. Mich wird das in der ersten Runde zumindest nicht betreffen, da ich gerade in einer PKV Antragsprozedur und auf dem Weg raus aus dem solidarischen Versicherungssystem bin, ich halte aber eine Gesundheitsakte aber grundsätzlich für etwas, wo es mindestens einen Opt-Out geben sollte. Zudem sollte der Zugriff auf die Daten immer transparent und vom versicherten Steuerbar sein.

Today, I learned that you can read and modify individual BIOS settings from within Linux on ThinkPad laptops:
For example the boot order priority:
~ ❯ sudo cat /sys/class/firmware-attributes/thinklmi/attributes/BootOrder/current_value
USBCD:USBFDD:NVMe1:NVMe0:HDD0:USBHDD:PCILAN
Settings can easily be changed by echoing the new values to the file in sysfs.

Danke, gut zu wissen. Ich werde es meist an einem USB-C Dock mit einem externen Monitor oder eben mobil betreiben. Ich werde aber beobachten, ob ich bei der GPU Auffälligkeiten bemerke.
Jetzt muss der Laptop erst mal gebaut und geliefert werden und dann kommt direkt Fedora drauf 😊
Der Gewichts-Unterschied zu einem fast 8 Jahre alten T480 ist halt echt krass.

My primary PC (A ThinkPad T480 from 2017) will be replaced by an upgrade in the next few weeks.
I've spent several weeks researching, weighing up and talking to others about what they use and how happy they are with it.
In the end, it was the following:
- ThinkPad T14s Gen4
- AMD Ryzen7 PRO 7840U (ZEN4)
- AMD Radeon 780M (iGPU)
- 32 GB LPDDR5 RAM
- 1 TB SSD (PCIe4)
- 14” 2.8K OLED Matt (HDR 500, 100% DCI-P3, 400 cd/m² )
- Fibocom L860 LTE module
- English QWERTY keyboard with backlight
The AMD platform was somewhat important to me and I'm really excited to see how the 2.8K OLED display will perform in practice 🙂
Of course, the new laptop will also run Fedora :fedora: with KDE Plasma :kde:.
The old ThinkPad T480 will then go to my wife and replace her T430.

My almost 6 year old ThinkPad T480 has a SIM card slot behind the battery. I never used that so far. This week, I grabbed a cheap prepaid SIM card from AldiTalk and tried it out.
Linux support was perfect. Right after login into my desktop, there was a dialog, prompting me for the PIN number. And after entering it, I was online.
I'm actually positively surprised how well it works and how fast mobile networks have become. I live in a very rural area of Germany in a small village and that LTE/4G modem still reliably gets up to 90 Mbps.
Also the O2 cellular network has native IPv6, which is absolutely great and I could reach all of my servers without a hassle.

Ich bin auch kein Gnome fan (normal KDE Plasma oder Cinnamon Desktop) aber in diesem Fall musste es zeingend ein RHEL mit Gnome sein. Tatsächlich hatte ich bisher gar nichts, was da nicht funktioniert. Ist inzwischen über einen Nginx Proxy-Manager und einer vorgelagerten Authentifikation mit Authentik auch ins Internet veröffentlicht. Somit habe ich überall, wo ein Webbrowser zur Verfügung steht, Zugriff auf meinen Cloud-Desktop.

downloading forza horizon 5 on Steam with around 120gb is the largest web-download, I can remember. In LAN, I’ve migrated my old FreeBSD NAS to my new one, which was a roughly 35TB transfer over NFS.

I don't need NAT/Port-Forwarding on my Home-Network anymore and disabled the last remaining "Port-Forwardings".
All the servers in my home-network, got publicly routed IPv6 addresses and incoming SSH is permitted on my Firewall/Gateway.
Since my mobile data-plan features modern networking, with IPv6, I can do any remote-access without any NAT via IPv6 now.
And in the rare case, I am on a network, that only supports a legacy IP protocol, I've built myself a road-warrior VPN on a Hetzner server, to get myself IPv6 connectivity in those situations.
IPv6 all the things !! 🙂

ich würde sogar in frage stellen, ob PKW in Städten überhaupt geduldet und akzeptiert werden sollten (mit sinnvollen Ausnahmen und dann Tempo 20/30). Entsprechende Abstell-Flächen in der Peripherie mit ÖPNV Anbindung würde ermöglichen soo viel Platz in den Städten für Menschen zu nutzen.

I wouldn't even know a way to play games that won't run on my steamdeck or one of my linux computers. I simply doesn't own a computer with another operating system. I have a Windows 10 VM that I unfortunately need to submit my national tax declaration (I'm legally obliged to do that and they only offer a win32 application) but that wouldn't work for any serious gaming anyway. 🤣

I heard somethign that statsd will be removed in 4.3 but we still run the currently stable Mastodon 4.2 and don't see any issues with that.
I doubt, Sidekiq will be removed as that's the core piece of software, doing the federation and queue handling in Mastodon

I had a similar issue recently and it was coming from the same provider/ASN.
After some hours, I installed the iptables xtables addon, got myself a fresh copy of the GeoIP database from Maxmind and temporarily blocked CN,VN,IN and RU to access my servers via iptables/xtables and immediately things were back to normal.
There’s always a small risk of overlocking when using access control based on GeoIP databases but I accepted that and it stabilized the situation quickly.

#Steam summer sale 2024 so far. I don't know why I constantly get more games, while already having an enormous "pile of shame" that I haven't touched yet 😆 The #SteamDeck made me buy even more games than last year.
Horizon Forza 5 is really a fun game !
The Crazy Taxi port for PC was running poorly and I had to refund it. The original Dreamcast version in an emulator runs significantly better.

Ich versuche es situativ zu machen, bin mir aber teilweise nicht sicher, wie es richtig ist.
Manchmal ist der eigentliche Toot schon eine Beschreibung dessen, was ich mit dem Bild ausdrücken möchte (z.B. ein Screenshot o.ä). Da bin ich dann unsicher, was am besten ist:
- Die Information aus dem Toot noch mal in die Bildbeschreibung packen?
- Ein Zusammenfassender kurzer Satz als Bildbeschreibung?
- Ein "siehe Toot" als Bildbeschreibung?
- Ganz weglassen
Ich habe mich dann meistens für die kurze Zusammenfassung oder ganz weglassen entscheiden, in Fällen in denen es völlig offensichtlich ist. Bin für Vorschläge oder andere Sichtweisen aber immer offen und versuche möglichst zugängliche und inklusive Beiträge zu erstellen.

In meiner Audible App habe ich noch 13 ungehörte Bücher.
Als ich noch einen Arbeitsplatz hatte, bei dem ich täglich zum Büro pendeln musste, habe ich jeden Tag auf der Autofahrt Hörbücher gehört.
Seit 03/2020 arbeite ich vollständig Remote von zuhause und habe kein einziges mal mehr die Audible App geöffnet 😅

Awesome #linux tool, I install on all my machines nowadays: #btop++ . Like top/htop but a lot prettier and with a lot more detail:
- Battery percentage and power usage
- CPU usage total and per core
- Memory utilization
- Disk utilization and I/O
- Network throughput
- Process viewer with detailed infos and the ability to kill stuff
- GPU performance data (with certain devices)
Unfortunately doesn't support my integrated Intel GPU but everything else is absolutely fantastic.

Der Nahverkehr ist unterirdisch. Zumindest hier in der Region.
Der Fernverkehr der deutschen Bahn ist aber meiner Meinung nach besser als sein Ruf und sehr komfortabel. Klappte für mich überwiegend gut und es ist ein erheblicher Konfortgewinn im Gegensatz zu stundenlangen Auto Fahrten.

Beim Wort Hochzeitsmasken habe ich gerade mein Müsli quer über den Schreibtisch geprustet 😂
Wenn ich mir die Fotos meiner Eheschließung anschaue (2022) war das ein regelrechter Maskenball. Kleine Runde aber alle, incl. des Beamten mit FFP.
Die Lage mit Covid hat sich nur unwesentlich verändert, die Masken sind jedoch größtenteils verschwunden. Infektionen? Egal geworden, scheint es. Zumindest bei den meisten.
Danke an alle vorsichtigen, umsichtigen und respektvollen. Jede vermiedene Infektion ist ein Los weniger in der Long COVID Lotterie.

DiscoElysium wasn’t my thing. I disliked the art style and the slow story telling. Might be a great game but didn’t catch for me.
Witcher 3 is just a masterpiece and I highly recommend it. One of the best games of the decade.

if you like tinkering, you might put Bazzite on there. In my opinion, the standard steam deck OS is also really good and gives you the most hassle-free experience. Most of the times „it just works“ and with the awesome CryoUtilities, you can tweak the system a little further (swappyness, swap file, huge pages etc.)

Productive Sunday evening:
- Updated my Proxmox Hypervisor Hosts and Backup-Server to new Debian GNU/Linux 12.6 and rebooted them.
- Updated burningboard.net Mastodon Instance to Debian GNU/Linux 12.6 plus a quick reboot.
- Started writing an Ansible playbook to unify all my ssh public-keys on the numerous servers, I have (Multiple keys from different times, inconsistent distribution of them on the systems etc.) My homelab systems are all using #freeIPA but my colo-servers developed into quite the chaos and that needs cleanup.
- Reworked my Neovim configuration to use Neogit instead of vim-fugitive

I use the awesome openpgp-card-ssh-agent (https://codeberg.org/openpgp-card/ssh-agent) from @npub18sq…29ap to use physical OpenPGP Smartcards for SSH authentication.
Sometimes, I want to use my OpenPGP card while working on a remote system.
An incredibly useful feature for that is SSH forwarding in combination with the agents socket (sockets can be forwarded via SSH just like tcp ports):
Socket location on my workstation: /run/user/1000/openpgp-card/ssh-agent.sock
Socket location on the remote host: $HOME/.tmp/ssh-agent.sock
1. Connecting to the remote server and forwarding the socket:
ssh -R /home/username/.tmp/ssh-agent.sock:/run/user/1000/openpgp-card/ssh-agent.sock remote-system.tld
2. Using the Socket on the remote system::
SSH_AUTH_SOCK=$HOME/.tmp/ssh-agent.sock ssh root@some-other-system.tld
Warning: This exposes the socket of opengp-card-ssh-agent to the remote system. Anyone with the neccesary privileges can use the session and access your local Smartcard, too. Use this with caution!

ich hatte 30,7 Grad in der Wohnung gestern um 16 Uhr 😅. Das war trotz Ventilator einfach nur belastend. Man hat dann halt auf hat nichts mehr lust. Und raus gehen brachte halt auch nichts, da war es genau so warm und dazu noch extrem schwül.

POC: #RedHat :redhat: Enterprise #Linux 9 Workstation running on #Proxmox VE with #xrdp and #Apache #Guacamole to access it internally (or via #wireguard VPN) via the Web Browser.
Running smoothly, fast enough and is a good self-hosted "cloud desktop" to do some work on on-the-go.
Initially only an experiment, but I'm really satisfied with the result and will keep it as a remote workstation 🙂

if you like Fedora, you’d probably also enjoy Bluefin Linux (GNOME) or Aurora Linux (KDE). They are both Fedora based distributions built on the Universal Blue project and even more polished than vanilla Fedora (plus they come with multimedia codecs, NVIDIA drivers and a good selection of software and sane defaults)

I am very happy with the Nitrokey 3 so far.
I use it for multiple things:
1. OpenPGP Card for E-Mail signing, file encryption, RPM package signing, GIT commit signing and SSH authnentication
2. FIDO2 Key for websites (github, google account etc.)
3. FIDO2 Authentication to my local system and sudo via pam_u2f
4. Storage of passwords and TOTP secrets on the Nitrokey stick
The firmware gets constantly improved and there are multiple releases a year. Just recently they enabled faster RSA4096 handling on the builtin security module.

Kleiner Erfahrungsbericht nach der ersten Woche mit dem #Steamdeck OLED:
Das Teil macht einfach mega viel Spaß! Kein verriegeltes System wie bei einer klassischen Konsole, sondern einfach nur ein Linux-Handheld Computer in tollem Formfaktor und mit großartiger Leistung!
Habe diese Woche ettliche Stunden Spaß mit #Hades und #Divinity gehabt und auch im Bereich Emulation ist das Deck echt phänomenal und überrascht mit großartiger Leistung und einer Community, die mit Herzblut und Engagement Dinge möglich macht, die ich nicht erwartet hatte.
Einziger (kleiner) Wermutstropfen ist die Akku-Laufzeit. Wird wohl Zeit für eine 45W Powerbank, bevor es auf die nächste Reise geht.
