Accounts that claim there's no engagement on the fedi are, in my experience, some of the only accounts not engaging. The only ones not getting in other people's comments with similar interests and just shooting the shit with no other agenda.
You cannot go to a jamboree, sit around your own fire and complain that no other scout troops are coming by to hear your guitar. Your troop has to go to everyone else's fires, listen to their stories, sing along with their songs and of course answer enquiries about whether you can play Teenage Dirtbag.

This is what I mean when I say the fedi is a series of kitchen tables. Not a form of email, not a world of islands, just a lot of kitchen tables.
Everyone is happy to see someone rock up to the kitchen table with a bunch of cat pics, a recipe and a silly question.
No one wants someone turning up to the barbecue with a professional portrait of oneself with cat, a series of YouTube links to polished videos of yourself presenting recipes and constantly questioning why these are not getting enough attention.

It's not the celebrity type [scicom personality, journalist, author] it's the attempt to run a celebrity account at all that doesn't work on the fedi.
There are heaps of well known people on the fedi. Either it's not obvious that's their day job or they're just quietly being that in among posts about walking their dog. Coming to the fedi trying to sell your day job and hoping people will 'engage' is odd. Like going to the playground or the museum and being mad that bystanders didn't engage your about your day job despite the sandwich board you're wearing and your refusal to talk about any other topic.
Going into a social environment broadcasting [📢this is my content, engage with it📢] is an obvious recipe for disappointment. No one cares about the things you're broadcasting. Show us your dog. Did they have a nice walk?

Do you want to get rid of your old DSLR? Is it good? Want a bit of money for it? In australia?
I'm happy to go with something aged in good working order. My main interests are macro botanical photography and art nudes in expansive landscapes. I also do some event photography (mostly motor sports) and increasingly, documenting disasters and drought.
I love a dedicated monochrome sensor with an excellent dynamic range, have a fraught relationship with colour sensors.
Interested mostly in camera bodies, although you could almost certainly tempt me to take old lenses off your hands, especially macro lenses.
Edit: I don't care how old it is but want it to behave like it's 1990-2005. Auto focus is good, auto white balance can be nice. An automatic star trail mode is handy. Auto [make this dog look like he's in a romcom] is not for me.

My class is studying impacts of tourism on nature and values of tourists for nature.
The big takeaways for me:
- Tourists want to be allowed to go places but they don't want tourists to be allowed to go there because they don't want to see any tourists while they're touring.
- Tourists don't want to see any infrastructure that implies there are tourists there, but they are certain every other tourist wants this.
- land managers put in infrastructure like tracks and toilets mostly to corral human damage
Tldr: the idea that 'most tourists like the tourist trap but I'm qualified to go off track' is almost universal among tourists and is one of the biggest problems for land management in australia. No one likes the tourist trap infrastructure, it's there to stop you fucking up nature Greg.

There's pervasive belief that LLMs will become something more intelligent and useful than a simple "most likely word next" machine, because our main touch point for learning is children.
Children go from talking a lot with very little understanding of the deep workings of things, to gaining understanding and eventually explaining the real world and innovating in it.
LLMs are not learning in this sense. They're just getting better at putting statistically likely words in statistically likely orders.

I've probably shared this one before but it's a classic so here it is anyway:
When someone tries to engage you in bonding over being mutually upset about some dog whistle bullshit ["isn't it so terrible that teenagers these days..."], focus the whole conversation on them being upset. Totally ignore the dog whistle and focus all conversation completely on the fact that they don't feel okay and they need strategies to feel better. Make sure they can't get another word in about "the teenagers" (or whatever) because the whole conversation is now about how they can be helped to better cope with emotions.

I like to follow up by asking if the thing they're complaining about describes themselves
Eg. So are you a recent immigrant? So do use you recreational drugs regularly? Are you currently banned from social media due to your age?
Then follow that up with "oh I just assumed, because you're the only person I've ever met who talks constantly about this one thing. Obviously you wouldn't be talking about it that much if you weren't going through it first hand".
This works great because people do grievance BS to try to distance themselves from whatever group they're talking about. Anything that imples they're actually making themselves look closer to the group they hate by hating sends them spinning.

the really interesting thing about this reply is you've decided I must find these meaningful because I have used them, but this is a fantasy on your part. I don't drink beer. I buy potatos in kilos. I measure walks in kilometres and people in kilos. I was raised using primarily metric then trained on SI units as a laboratory worker. Until my 30s I was fully on board, a firm believer in the standard party line that imperial is (always and forever, any day now) on the way out.
Then I read about how the imperial system is derived and why it's used.

I would love to start tending these neglected graves, but I actually don't know how you would go about respectfully tending such unusual graves. That would be a complex interaction with the local culture.
For example some grave sites were never intended to be weeded or mowed, to do so would be disturbing their natural process. Many graves would also be expected to rust, it would not be appropriate to disturb that.

I've decided to replace "spoiling the child" with "instiling entitlement".
I previously had simply stopped saying "spoiled", because it doesn't seem to exist. You can't treat a child too well. You can't love them too much. You cannot give them too much education, experience, fun or joy. It's simply impossible. But you can instill entitlement.
You can instill entitlement to cut lines, pinch down, hog space and take more treats than the person beside you.
You can also instill entitlement to walk away, say no, hold boundaries, be treated reasonably and be free from violence.

I reckon this is intentional. By placing massive friction around exercising consent, you make any worker who understands consent seem like a source of friction in the workplace.
It takes a worker who understands consent 10x as long to do anything in tech compared with a worker who simply taps [ALLOW] every time.
This effectively purges workplaces of any workers who assert their own right to privacy, have any boundaries or are generally in the habit of standing up for themselves.

We don't talk anywhere near enough about how the tech industry is fucking with the general public's understanding of consent.
Fairly often I will opt out of something that would have been obviously reasonable a few years ago, and people will look at me like I drove a truck through the room.
Things like:
- I won't be appearing on camera today
- I don't wish to speak on a recording to be published on the University website
- I won't be giving my personal details to an overseas third party just to use a notepad tool in one meeting
I see this seeping through into attitudes about consent in other everyday life contexts. People are so used to being walked all over by their tech that they're increasingly shocked by boundaries.

There's a less valid argument here that this will all fall apart when people lose interest/capacity and therefore is it not sustainable.
On the first point, good. People should stop doing voluntary stuff they no longer have the resources or motivation to do, boundaries, rest and self care are good actually.
Secondly: the idea that since it could spontaneously stop any time, and probably will, that is inherently by definition unsustainable.
On the same token one might argue singing a song in a group is an unsustainable thing to do. Because you cannot sing the same song together forever without stopping.
You must rest when you're tired, then perhaps sing a different song, maybe with different people. This doesn't make singing songs an unsustainable practice. Most people in sustainability would agree singing songs in groups has a lot of offer sustainability from many angles.

I see the very valid argument that without administion and formal structure, continuity remains only when as the community has capacity to do it.
My argument is that's how things work anyway. You can have all the committee structure in the world, but the actual work is an emergent property of the community's capacity. If you burn out your people, you lose your collective service either way.

Me: this is how bikes get repaired and recycled in this one small town.
- The junkyard guy leaves nice ones out by his gate for a day or two before dismantling them for scrap.
- there are several people in the town who know they can come past regularly and take anything by the gate
- there's a guy who takes any bikes he thinks we can salvage, they are almost always kids' bikes, there are just more of those
- a rotating group of friends and people who want to learn about bikes work on them
- when they're finished we distribute them by word of mouth: is there anyone around 6-8yo who wants a purple bike?
- the bikes seem to come with lifetime servicing. No one mentions this until the bike needs servicing, then they just say 'we better get onto servicing your bike, hey?' and it happens
- you can do a trade-in/upgrade. Kids swap their bikes for bigger bikes, people service the little bike and give it to another kid
-there is no name, no official location, no contact details for this, it's an ephemeral property that emerges from the community every day that the community has capacity to do it. It is fascinating and I am glad to have witnessed it.

A lot of general disaster preparedness has been intentionally left off, because that's covered in so many other places and because there's a good chance you have them in place at all times.
Obviously you want to have food and water for anywhere from 2 day to two weeks, meds and self/pet/child care essentials, having independent power, water and gas storage is great, but that's all long term planning stuff, not "just got a take shelter in 15 minutes warning" type stuff.

#evacuation lists are easy time come by. What I haven't seen is a similar document for preparing to shelter in place through a disaster that is likely to damage the building. Given we keep getting warnings, I'm going to start my own, just so I have something on hand for when this happens in future.
This is mostly applicable to storms, as that's what we keep getting alerts about.
Anyway #ShelterList
- put on sturdy boots, fresh hiking socks, work pants
- put pets in safest room with water, beds and cages at the ready. Feed and medicate pets
- charge devices including battery packs and headlamps, put in known location
- take meds before event arrives, put meds in known location
- ensure important documents are in waterproof bags in safe
- cover electronics
- clear valuables and bedding away from windows and flood prone parts of the building
- have a meal and a shower (assuming there's no lightning)

HR told me to fire the employees who had been underpaid instead of organising back payment (I refused and organised backpay for those I knew about, before being pressured to resign so a new manager could come in a fire anyone needing backpay).

Wanted: one bright red steel roof.
Today's edition of you can find someone who knows anything on the fedi: does anyone know a supplier of roofing steel in vic or SA in a red colour lighter than Manor Red/Heritage Red?
Colourbond advertises several (under the name 'Colourbond Studio') and Unicote makes a couple, but I can't find a supplier. None of the local roof plumbers gets anything other than standard colours, but they're happy to work with a supplier of more specialised colours if I can find them.

Edit: roof will be installed in a remote rural area. Unfortunately it will be travelling a long distance regardless. Supplier can be anywhere from Melbourne to Adelaide. Would even consider NSW suppliers.
