in the context of software, free means вільно / свободно / frei / libre. When it's about cost, безкоштовно / бесплатно / gratis, the term freeware is used.
In that sense if you really want everything to be listed as fully free, it has to comply with the four freedoms for free software.
At the same time, being listed as "may fetch non-free content" is not seen as that problematic in the context of F-Droid by many of its users. They will be happy that the software is free and at the same time understand and accept that some of the content it uses has limitations on what could be done with it.
If you browse through F-Droid, you will see many important applications have this notice and they will still have a lot of happy users. There is no reason to feel bad or discouraged that Organic Maps has this note. Just keep doing what you're doing and don't worry about this aspect!!

are there any alternative DNS services that continue to resolve domains like these? It would seem important be able to maintain working DNS independently from US decision making.

they should probably enable TOTP. That sometimes gets confused by the system with MS Authenticator, but if that option lets you view a code then you can use any TOTP calculator.
My employer ran into this too and TOTP is used because indeed not every employee has a suitable device for MS Authenticator or SMS.
Maybe you could send them back an AI response on how to enable TOTP if that is indeed disabled. Let it write some text too on why that is more secure than MS Authenticator :)

does this apply only if you missed switching over to gem.coop or is that affected as well?

I tried to configure something like this in Thunderbird, but couldn't really figure it out. I would still be interested in that if somebody has the steps for that.

wasn't it simply "Red Hat Linux" back then? I think Fedora only came later. I was getting SuSE CDs myself at the time.

the XLAB article mentions the X96Q which matches the model on my box (there are different boxes with that model though).
It also mentions that the culprit is in some so files from a particular apk. This means running Armbian should be fine if you have an affected box:
Working images can be found on the forums: https://forum.armbian.com/search/?q=X96Q
I'll check if my box has those apk/so files when I get an opportunity.
Generally the hardware itself should be fine though, wasteful to just bin it.

it's not clear to me why replacing the entire software wouldn't make them secure.
It might possibly even work to simply kill the offending applications. I have a very cheap box (was around $25) which became quiet with regards to traffic after I stopped various applications (mainly a torrent one that was there with a preconfigured torrent was establishing a lot of connections).
When I insert an SD card with Armbian, it just boots that instead of Android.

note that you can run Armbian on some of these. Be sure to look at the Armbian forums for unofficial builds if there's no official build.

not allowing to unlock the bootloader is likely a GPL violation. It would seem good to address that in a way the @npub103f…kaf3 is doing. https://sfconservancy.org/copyleft-compliance/vizio.html

I found it helpful myself to have a good understanding of the different philosophies that underpin Linux and GNU. Especially the technical consequences for each of them. Whereas Linux regards userspace binary compatibility as holy, in GNU land it's much more "why don't you just recompile?" as the assumption is one would typically have source code.
Being aware of the different mindsets helps a lot to understand different rationales around each component. And I can appreciate both.

there are even people trying to help out IPv6-only ISPs to deal with IPv4 connectivity without asking for any compensation.
See https://nat64.xyz/ and especially https://nat64.net/isp and https://nat64.net/transit
This is an amazing approach to enable, encourage, support IPv6-only ISPs.

but how that work along with for instance a Dutch person's right to vote in the Dutch parliamentary elections when they live outside of the EU? At this point, especially in more eastern European countries, the votes from abroad have significant effect on the outcome of elections.
I think in the end it boils down to a philosophical question on the meaning of citizenship. One could argue we need a EU citizenship before we could move there. I do hope your goal will become reality!!

that makes sense, but I presume you'd need to adopt German citizenship then?

it's good you are sharing and thank you for being patient. I've never crossed the ocean (or visited an English-speaking country), so I lack such insight.
From this side of the ocean it is very illogical that all these older white men that are supposedly absolutely not gay are so attached to one-another...
And thank you once more for always posting the way you do! I don't often respond, but I hope you know it's always appreciated!!

And yeah, I don't want to make it a Twitter participation thing, but it seems very frustrating that there are no consequences for such creep behavior. In any normal circumstances it would lead to some kind of sanction, but now it's the creeps making the rules. It's so incredible I just don't know what to say....

but would it make a difference is she would not be white? Regarding her age, I thought she was younger indeed (based on appearance), but none the less I find it unbelievable somebody of Trump's much older age would act such.
I just realized that maybe I missed a nuance on whether calling somebody a girl instead of a woman in English is inappropriate. My apologies.

why specifically 'white'?
It's the old grandpa that's posting seemingly with such obsession about a girl that I would say is most of all rather young.
Generally this is so much beyond any acceptable conduct, it's appalling that this is not somehow addressed. I don't know if Taylor Swift is on Twitter, but I think she had better move her presence off there. It would be sad if her fans would not understand given all this.
