Open source software is software whose source code is accessible, and usable, without any obfuscation, compilation, or removal of information known to the people writing it. With notable exception for overly large, highly coupled projects (cough Firefox cough) which I consider a form of obfuscation.
Free software is software whose writer wrote a document stating that it cannot be used for un-free reasons (such as commercial software), and they added "no takebacksies" at the bottom so you have to do what they say.

Heh, yeah. "Open source" is high quality grade A bullshit. Because it *is* bad that people get to close the source, and even make reverse engineering illegal. Open source *is* good, because as long as the source is open, people can change it if it's bad.
But it kind of dodges the policy and protocol, where open source software is not exactly free. Just because the mechanism exists to fix things doesn't mean you won't be attacked for using it, as a "cheater," (though the bosses get to cheat as much as they want ofc.) Stopping that validation of punching down is important, as is preventing people from profiting from other people's hard work.
Personally I think "free software" is a joke, but at least they try to go after profiteers, in a limp wristed good boy sort of way. But reframing it as "open source" to give a free pass to profiteers is way worse, and shouldn't be in any article criticizing the software industry.

Opened my eye without eyedrops at like 1:30am last night. For some reason I was convinced that getting my eye to water is the only way to deal with the pain, so I blinked several times. Was in blistering pain after that with streaming tears for about an hour, but I finally healed enough I could keep my eyes closed. Woke up in pain several more times during the night, but managed to use eyedrops to mitigate the damage. Now my eye is stinging, red and sore, but I can finally take some aspirin since it's breakfast time. Just hoping it helps.

Personally I've never seen love win um, ever. Even our stories are about how tragic it is that people truelove each other but it cannot be. The only power love seems to have is making people think it's the most powerful.
But I'm more thinking about how love remains pure and pristine (and useless) because we don't combine it with greed, ambition, and hatred. You can have all your greed related needs met through markets, freeing you to have a greedless, giving, selfless, etc love for Jesus, which feels great! Except when you're at work.
But without markets, you can't love like that, since you can't take care of yourself if you do. So valuing love means you value markets, and won't abolish them.
Like we used to have arranged marriages. Why'd that stop? Those were great! (Hint: well funded propaganda.)

It's structural/systemic more than anything. Even the liberal leftie Jesus teaches people that they are not worthy, and only a higher authority can make the right choices for them. And even progressive "accepting" churches are run by a small group who do not attend the churches they own. That's fine if your "Reconciling" Methodist bishops aren't fascist, but you can imagine how quickly things might transition, as parishoners learn that they are on the bottom of a very tight hierarchy that does not include them in the decision making process.
Ironically, the Baptists are the least likely to get compromised by fascists, since they *have* no hierarchy and are a loose collection of independent churches. Not sure what happened there.
Oh also the Unitarian Universalists, the members own the building. It still has a hierarchy, though (and in the past got orders from on high to be "more churchy" and hate on atheists since it'd attract atheophobes to join which is a desirable thing for some reason).

There are also some serious tells that subversive agents can't exactly get around. They need to collect info from members, so they'll act like people who need that info. They can't have a well established reputation, so they have to dodge inquiries into their past and personal lives. They have to ingratiate themselves with members at first, and they have to infect the group with a hierarchy. So if someone starts "rising to the top" super fast, because they're so nice and helpful and have tons of resources to share but nobody knows exactly why, and they're talking about the need to assert power and control over the Bad members (for reasons you can't deny without becoming Bad) then it's uh... time for mitosis, so to speak.
You could write a book on how to identify bad actors, and how to identify false flag groups aimed at snatching up activists and keeping them from organizing. That would really help. We're all joining the wrong tribes.

I saw a weird furry comic the other day that pointed out something interesting. People don't need religion to have hope. They'll hope for a better life, or a mating partner, or that to be chosen for that cushy job on the third floor. They'll find heroes and role models all by themselves. What religion does is it takes that hope, and replaces it with someting more... exploitable. You can no longer hope for things to get better you can only hope for God to make things better. You can no longer hope that you'll improve. You can only hope for God to improve you, if you can be sufficiently servile to Him. You can't count on yourself, only God acting through you.
So that's kind of why I think religion is stinky and bad. To quote another extremely obscure source that'd be a huge spoiler if I revealed it:

They pick the next word according to what the most likely next word is. With some randomness thrown in to keep them from going into infinite loops. That's it. The only distinction is they can guess relatively well according to what the past several dozen (hundred?) words are. They're still guessing based on nothing but randomness, and their training data, which are people's words.
It really becomes apparent when you ask them to write something with a lot of words, like a book. But even "press releases" are long enough it's pretty obvious. And they're only repeating what people have already said, just randomly mixed up to give you the illusion that it's something new, by hiding their sources.

The fact that you're defining things in terms of dollar hours, when the dollar is so hopelessly compromised, makes me feel like we won't get anywhere here. It's true that Claude is very good at convincing hiring managers to fire people on the assumption that cheap access to mega data centers will continue to be a thing. A combine harvester devours fossil fuels and requires massive steel refineries to build, and offers no real advantage other than letting one person steal all the farmland without agriculture collapsing, and it produces much, much more decent results than any AI datacenter. If you think they care whether it's effective, and you think that it's going to improve as they prophecize while the technology wallows in the terrible idea it has always been, you might have another thing coming.
The slop is the point. They're trying to ruin everything faster than we can keep up, so we'll be powerless to hold them accountable for their actual crimes against humanity. You kidding? Not practical? Think of how much money it costs to collect fares! You need fare machines, and your lovely politicians will be investing in the 300,000 bucks electronic plastic smartphone surveillance machines, rather than a 50 dollar ticket punch. You have to pay for people to check tickets, and catch any fare dodgers, and that's a dangerous job since people don't appreciate "You have to pay $500 for having one bad day," so you have to pay extra to goons who can rough your passengers up. You'd be losing passengers who couldn't pay, or didn't like being roughed up by your goons, both of whom are a huge drain on your city's resources as they struggle to have basic needs met, and can't get to work or go shopping. You have to pay for people and computers to record ticket sales, and to do card transfers. You have to build at least one ticket booth.
The vast majority of fare collection schemes barely break even, and even when they make a profit, it's like 1% of the money you need to maintain and operate public transit, so the rest WILL have to come from taxes.
So yeah, you actively DISimprove public transport services, when you waste time collecting fares. The only reason to do it is to remind people that they're worth less than rich people, every time they grimace at yet another fare hike you were forced to do by these trying times. Far as I can tell, at least.

In C++, an abstract base class defines a virtual function = 0. The thing about tyrants and slavers is they crave finality. They beat you and that's that, and nothing can change it, they think. They have you hopelessly in debt for instance, that means they won. The end.
Tyrants, I like to say, will always win. And then they will lose. Because ultimately their claim, their *demand* that their victory be eternal isn't reality. People can *always* fight back, and *will* always fight back. Wars are *never* won, and people are *never* conquered. Tyrants have some amount of time they can cling to power, but after that they're gone. Because everyone hates a tyrant. Everyone.
The only way for them to perpetuate the tyranny then is to convince you of the delusion. You believe you have to repay your debts, pay tribute to your conquerors. The reality is you only have to repay them while the cops are standing there forcing you to. Soon as they are busy elsewhere, it's not just your right, but your moral obligation to abandon your financial obligations. Repaying your debt is a pathetic failure, not a successful achievement. Once you realize that they engineered your beliefs, conditioning you to unconsciously enshrine debt repayment (i.e. slavery) as something noble and not vile, you start to feel like those women wearing burqas. You're no longer doing it because you believe women/people should be slaves; you're only doing it because you don't want to get stoned.
And the debt collectors do not have enough stones for all of us.

That's not how insurance works. The insurance company charges the patients a regular fee, to pay for whatever the doctor demands. Or dentist (not doctor) in this case. Then the insurance company merges with a hospital purchasing company, and a drug selling company, and a medical equipment selling company, and a student loan company, and an insurance company auditing company, and pressures the doctors to charge more money that way.
I think the goons come with the real estate robbers, or the drug cartels. Maybe both.

Seriously if you want to make bank, be a dentist. All you have to do is not care about human suffering, and you won't even need a medical degree. Just heard a story of a fellow who built a system for cleaning up server resources in Space Engineers. Players spawn stranded on a planet, so there's a planet created for every player. If a player dies, they sure aren't going to be signing on again. So he scripted a "black core" which would make a big bright explosion, and replace the planet with a "memorial" that didn't take up so much server resources. I think it was called a "Final Impact" just a frikkin inspired way to honor players who passed away. He also suggested that regular players could (with difficulty) get their hands on a "black core" but could only use it on their own planet, with the hopes that it would help people who were considering suicide could use it as a cry for help. Or help people rage quit the game.
Except he was stuck in a shithole country in the Balkans still oppressed by Russia to this day, and you fuckers rejected every attempt he made to leave saying he couldn't "provide proof of sufficient means of subistence." No one on the server suspected *he* was the one at risk, but one day he used one of his debugging "black cores" to cause a Final Impact, leaving only a note that the pain was too much, he was sorry but he couldn't take it anymore. He was never seen online again.
So fuck you, fuck your passports, fuck you for having a passport and participating in this globalist slavery machine. I get that the police are forcing you, but you're still a slimy shit for presenting it and feeling like you are doing the right thing, or you're "safe" from harm. That being said... they aren't gods. They can't act with impunity. They'll try to keep people in debt, and renting, and paying mortgages, and all that, and try to use that to make the UBI effectively no good at getting you off the streets.

We need to be discussing debt forgiveness. As the late David Graeber might have observed. If you forgive everyone's debt, the bastards on top come toppling down because we don't have to do what they want anymore.
If you *don't* forgive everyone's debt, and *leave* the bastards on top while implementing a Universal Basic Income, then if your UBI is $2000/month everyone will suddenly mysteriously accidentally (not accidentally) end up in debt, owing something to the tune of $2000/month to their creditors. Sorry we have to raise everyone's rent by $2000/month but we're just forced to by that bad, bad, Universal Basic Income.

replace graft looks weird... what I did was a rebase, and it worked great except I had to meticulously resolve every single merge conflict in the history of B. Which probably broke everything, but eh. I can merge upstream now!

#git repository A has commits A0, A1, ... An. Repository B has a galaxy brain dev who just copied the source files from commit A7 into a new repository and created B0, B1, ... Bn.
Since B0 and A7 are functionally identical, it should be possible to rebase B1...Bn onto A7, to make a new branch off A7 with the same changes as in B1...Bn, and then I can merge it with An. Except that repositories A and B have unrelated histories, thanks to aforementioned galaxy brained genius.
Is this even possible? Or should I just merge An and Bn with allow-unrelated-histories, and hope that the merge finds A7 to use as a base?

It does make them subject to their creditors, in that older empires get trounced by the people they subjugate. But that's far more apparent in all the colonialism, slave plantations in Madagascar and such. The creditors who were dumb enough to invest in USA currency don't have any ground to stand on. Thumbing your nose at them and saying "OK sucker, come on make my 'debt' higher," is the proper response to any demands.

As I understand it, when you check out money from a bank in the USA, they promise to check out that money for you, but don't actually do it. Then you use that promise (called "bank currency") to buy things. The bank can't provide the literal Federal Reserve Notes, but you all got suckered into using your bank cards for everything, because ohh, that cash is just so crude, and probably terrorists use it. So you never notice you don't even get the pretend money the USA created. You get a promise for the bank to pay you, made of promises for the central bank to pay the government.
Why any business accepts credit/debit cards, when they're fully aware that it means they aren't getting paid any money, is beyond me. Why not just give away everything on your shelves!

I programmed in python for a long time, but the python/C interface hid so many bugs. Mysterious segfaults with no way to tell on either side what was wrong. Did a brief stint with Lua but it's much the same thing, and has no good debugger to boot. D was great, until there was a segfault in garbage collection and all context for the segfaulting thing had already been discarded. Tried Go for a bit, but really I was looking for a language that was fast to compile and run, with as little inscrutable (i.e. undebuggable) "magic" as possible. (And yes python gets compiled.) So finally I found the language that was fastest to compile than any other language, and also fast to run, and didn't have a lot of bullshit magic going on.

That's why money isn't a unit of measure, how I define money at least. Lumber can be money, but credit cannot be money. If you owe me a million dollars, that doesn't give me a million dollars. This has inconvenienced rich fucks for quite a while since they *do* have to stockpile, and the bigger the pile, the bigger the reward from stealing it.
That's why they switched to currency by fiat, which literally is you owe me a million dollars, means I now have a million dollars to spend. That's how it works in the USA at least. The "Federal Reserve" promises that they'll totally pay the USA a million dollars, and the USA spends that promise, in the form of Federal Reserve Notes. The fact that that million dollar check to the USA can never be cashed is considered a feature not a bug.

Oof, see, Systemd tangles itself up in other programs during compilation... they won't work without recompiling. That's why distros force systemd, because it's either required, or you can't use it at all. You might have better luck with a distribution that takes the second option, instead of trying to alter Debian and recompiling it all. Have you considered Devuan?

I think the slight increase in privacy of directly messaging matchmakers would absolutely destroy data miners and manipulators, even if it wasn't encrypted. Important thing is not just anyone gets to know that.
One idea I had for a communication network in fact was deliberate middle-manning. You middle-man between your friend and a new contact you recommended for them, so that new contact's exact identity isn't revealed to your friend right away. And they could use steganography, and multiple random middle-men to get the true identity across the wire. Like if we have three mutuals, who all know my key, I can send it to you through them, and unless they're all coordinating, you'll get it at least once.
So that's kind of like dating via a matchmaker middle-man until enough trust is formed.

Honestly a matchmaking (app?) technique on the Fediverse would probably work better than straight dating. You'd privately message the matchmaker with what you're looking for and some information about yourself, and they'd recommend people to you. They'd be in a good position to do so, since people send them their info, without having to publish that info for everyone to see.
There are problems with it of course.
