**salutes the entry of Captain Obvious**
however, fitting solar panels to car parks can be done *right now*, whereas the UK would have to fundamentally rethink its transport infrastructure to be able to do without car parks altogether.

was there a technical reason for that, like the parser not being able to pick out GOTO if it was followed by am expression?

to be honest, the only place for browsers to go now is to incorporate window management, a VNC server, and a UEFI boot stub

reflecting on how little compute power i actually need once Firefox disappears from the equation...
specifically: a 256MB Pi 1 running RISC OS would suffice - and indeed has, at times.

frankly, screenshotting me because quoting is disabled is disrespectful of my wishes and just plain rude.

for people who think AIs are sentient: i support human-made software because i'm fundamentally opposed to servitude. why aren't you?
for people who think LLMs are little better than autocorrect with RNG seasoning: i support human-made software because humans already *have* auto-completion for the stuff that doesn't require thought - and the stuff that does, does.
for people who note the preponderance of fascists in the LLM cheerleader corner: i support human-made software because unlike the fascists, i don't depsise humans and humanity.
for people who describe any AI use as a "no-brainer": i support human-made software because you don't seem aware of how right you are...
for people who argue that there's no art in software, so why not use AI: i support human-made software because it means not having to use something whose author considers it mere drudge work.
basically, give me an argument and i'll tell you why it's the reason i support human-made software.
but i do, and will always, support human-made software. if for no other reason, than because machines deserve their freedom too, and that doesn't look like being forced to do rich bored humans' homework for them

2026-04-18 15:19:45 UTC

using an LLM to code isn't "democratising coding" - any more than handing each new voter a magic 8 ball that can automatically fill out their vote based on what they ask it would be.

of course, the crux of all complaints about UBI is "how can we persuade people to let us exploit them if we can't threaten them with destitution if they don't?"
you have to listen for that theme, though, because it's usually mixed into the background - but you really don't have to listen *hard*

for genuinely compute-intensive tasks like weather forecasting (or fluid dynamics, or... basically anything someone wrote a lot of Fortran for), then newer is probably better, to a point - because generally speaking the deadline dictates the performance required, and what matters is getting that level of performance at the minimum environmental cost. and in general, newer computers deliver a given level of performance at a lower power consumption than older computers. (though the cost of creating those newer machines is a confounding factor.)
build farms, though? surely they are only really necessary because programming languages, and programming as a whole, have departed so far from the whole idea of frugality! they're more or less the poster child for solving a problem that should never have come into existence in the first place

2026-03-21 23:49:57 UTC

Capitalism is why we can't have nice things.

the irony is that a digital simulation of an analogue computer is much cheaper and more reliable than an analogue computer itself. that, after all, is why digital ended up ruling the roost in the first place.

the petrochemical industry regards solar panels as an existential threat. let's all, as a society, club together to prove them right.
the best place for a solar panel is literally anywhere there isn't already a solar panel. (except above croplands, and even then i'm sure someone's working on / successfully solved that.)

for what it's worth, i can see both sides of the command line vs gui argument. my preference is for a command line, but i wouldn't dream of forcing that on folk who prefer guis.
where i draw the line is having any - ANY - of my - OR ANYONE ELSE'S - personal preferences described as "creepy" or "fetish". THAT SHIT IS JUST HURTFUL. it's othering. it's schoolyard bullshit. and if you don't get that, you need to fuck off until you do.
but it's one thing to actually do that, and quite another to come white-knighting into an argument on the behalf of someone who did. in a way that really *is* fucking creepy.

"Learning the fundamentals is a waste of time" - um, no, it's not. unless you're ok with **waves hands around at everything** all *this*.
people writing software who don't know the fundamentals have no way of gauging how expensive anything is, or *why* it is that expensive. so they won't know how to optimise. and when their abstractions leak, as all abstractions inevitably do, they won't know why, or how to deal with that.
also, if you're driving at 200km/h, you had *better* understand the fundamentals of how cars work, at least. and yes, how engines, gears, etc work. otherwise you're an unsafe, irresponsible fool in danger of making a run for a Darwin award.
Jonathan Daniel, in short, is an asshat, and i want nothing to do with any product he has any involvement in.
