for genuinely compute-intensive tasks like weather forecasting (or fluid dynamics, or... basically anything someone wrote a lot of Fortran for), then newer is probably better, to a point - because generally speaking the deadline dictates the performance required, and what matters is getting that level of performance at the minimum environmental cost. and in general, newer computers deliver a given level of performance at a lower power consumption than older computers. (though the cost of creating those newer machines is a confounding factor.)
build farms, though? surely they are only really necessary because programming languages, and programming as a whole, have departed so far from the whole idea of frugality! they're more or less the poster child for solving a problem that should never have come into existence in the first place

for what it's worth, i can see both sides of the command line vs gui argument. my preference is for a command line, but i wouldn't dream of forcing that on folk who prefer guis.
where i draw the line is having any - ANY - of my - OR ANYONE ELSE'S - personal preferences described as "creepy" or "fetish". THAT SHIT IS JUST HURTFUL. it's othering. it's schoolyard bullshit. and if you don't get that, you need to fuck off until you do.

"Learning the fundamentals is a waste of time" - um, no, it's not. unless you're ok with **waves hands around at everything** all *this*.
people writing software who don't know the fundamentals have no way of gauging how expensive anything is, or *why* it is that expensive. so they won't know how to optimise. and when their abstractions leak, as all abstractions inevitably do, they won't know why, or how to deal with that.
also, if you're driving at 200km/h, you had *better* understand the fundamentals of how cars work, at least. and yes, how engines, gears, etc work. otherwise you're an unsafe, irresponsible fool in danger of making a run for a Darwin award.
