Last night wifey was chatting with one of the regulars at the dance club she DJs at (wifey DJs)... the regular asked me if I also DJ. I paused and thought about it and confidently said I would be a terrible DJ.
Mostly because being a good DJ is (apparently) about reading the room and keeping the dance floor going.
Apparently normal people wanna dance to _familiar_ songs that they've heard a bjillion times?
I would play so much random shit that it would kill the dance floor for just about everyone who wasn't just an “I'll dance to anything" person.

@nprofile…0ceu a NAS (network attached storage) is just a dedicated computer that stays online and connected to your network and has some storage drives accessible to other computers on your local network. Any computer can be used as a NAS with some small configuration settings. You can even plug in external drives into the NAS computer.
Jellyfin (jellyfin.org) is a server app you can run on the NAS computer. You configure it to point to your media folder(s) on the computer, and it acts as sort of a combination Spotify/Netflix replacement that just runs local on your home network.
And assuming you might also want to access your jellyfin server when you’re _not_ at home, you can also install Tailscale (VPN) on your NAS, which allows you to remote access the Jellyfin server even when you’re away.
… having now typed all that out I’m thinking this is probably better as a blog post. This is kinda the basic idea though. :)

An old laptop/PC/raspberry pi could likely do the trick as the server, if you're the only person using the service.

While out dancing last night, the DJ played Sade's classic Smooth Operator.
And now I cannot get it out of my head that it has some really weird geography descriptors.
"Coast to coast, L.A. to Chicago, Western Maine" ??
What coast is Chicago!? the coast of Lake Michigan?
what the hell is happening in Eastern Maine that the smooth operator is only operating in Western Maine? A quick look at the map shows that there are basically no cities at all in Western Maine- so that's a strange place to be.
A quick look at a lyric site seems to think that the line is western male and not western Maine. I guess that makes slightly more sense, especially since he considers Chicago a coast and he only goes back-and-forth between LA and there.
but then she starts mentioning Key Largo, which is distinctly further east than Chicago.
this song is breaking my brain, and I am still not convinced that that line is western male. 🤣

There is a local 80s alternative dance night that I frequent. If it's your birthday, the DJ will play a three song set of whatever you request. The songs don't strictly have to be 80s, but ideally they're in the 80s/alt rock/left of the dial stuff.
I love weird cover songs. I am attempting to identify what I will call a "triangle of cover songs" so I can request that for my bday.
A covers B, B covers C, C covers A.
I have found some very entertaining and ridiculous covers, but I have yet to find a closed loop.
I need to identify a highly covered artist who is also big into doing covers. I swear Iggy Pop or David Bowie are the most likely candidates.

Honestly, I have an easier time talking about Gaza with non-Jews than I do with fellow Jews, because being pro-Israel is so ingrained in the Jewish experience that it might as well be the air we breathe.
Right around 12:28 in the video Jon says “I was raised in the story of Israel being necessary for the safety of Jews. Which, by the way, if that’s the case, we have a much bigger problem in this world than anything else. The idea that a people need to have an armed fortress of a homeland just to be safe living in this world is an absolute failure of humanity in the first place.”
I get that we (Jews) have thousands of years of history of being the underdogs/scapegoats/victims of persecution, but character is measured by how one behaves when one has power as well as how one behaves when powerless.

What is a band or album which had many radio hit songs, but has since been reduced over time to maybe 1 or 2 songs that are “remembered”?
My favorite example of this effect is Smashing Pumpkins, which, near as I can figure, has been reduced to the song "1979" despite them having numerous songs that got radio time during the 90s.

When I am unwell or injured, I am a “bad patient” and generally do not want sympathy. I mostly just want to hate the universe until whatever the condition is has subsided.
Do not ask me if I’m okay.
What I will accept in those times is solidarity in hating the universe. If I stub my toe on the bed frame, tell me you’re on your way to go burn down the factory that built it. That might make me feel a bit better. Never ask if I’m okay though.
P.S. my toe is fine and I’m not sick at the moment, this is just a tangent that came up due to a conversation with a friend.

recently wifey was shopping for a laser cutter, and I forbid her from purchasing one that relied on a cloud service in order to function. The last thing I need is a very expensive paperweight when that company folds.

@nprofile…m4ce Basically the players trade off playing requests, which are accompanied by "bribe money" - the bigger the bribe the faster your song gets played. Mostly it's just a lot of ridiculous drunken sing-a-longs to the sorts of songs you're likely to hear at karaoke.
But I'm a troll and like to see if they can play deeper cuts. 😂

Late to #ThursdayFiveList #UnderCover “Songs that someone else sang first”, but I can do what I want. 😂
IMHO good covers must almost completely alter the song such that it barely resembles the original and takes on new facets as a result.
1. H.I.M. - Wicked Game https://youtu.be/8oYodfK4DkE
Chris Isaak did a crooning mopey sensual ballad thing, H.I.M. turns it into a swirling mix of goth rock, glam metal, and yet still keeps that core crooning aspect. He sounds downright anguished as he belts it out.
2. Devo - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction https://youtu.be/QmKQ2Z1odSc
The Rolling Stones version is full of sexual angst. Devo's version is so downright mechanical it feels like they're going through the bare minimum motions required to meet the criteria of "cover"... and yet at the same time this is the most DEVO sounding thing imaginable. Mocking the entire concept of rock n' roll while still participating in it.

Duran Duran's magnum opus- sped up, turned into a 3rd wave ska punk song, and then they take it a step further by throwing in some random references to The Monkees and Ronnie James Dio. Perfection.

I'm not much of a fan of Kate Bush, but I readily admit this is a great song. Another Heaven takes it, slows it down into a distortion fuzzed out guitar riffed slog and renders it barely recognizable from the original. Kate's version feels like a pleading prayer with a glimmer of hope. This version feels more like that glimmer has turned to defeat.
5. Type O Negative - Cinnamon Girl https://youtu.be/BO9aD4mzSE8
Neil Young's version feels thin and almost whiny compared to the lush wall of sound that Type O brings to this track. Type O has such a distinct style that they can cover pretty much anything and it will cease to have any resemblance to the original. A genre unto themselves. (Though there are some immitators nowadays.)
