For another, we clearly differ in our views on the modern digital plague, as the engine has been and will continue to accept AI contributions and their new asset store does and will continue to accept AI assets. Which makes it impossible for me to use newer versions of the tool.
So what to do?
Feel like one of those devs who can't give up Unity because all their eggs are in that basket. 🙄

With that, I do find myself in a precarious position. Most of my expertise is based around one game engine. That's where I'm most proficient...
For a number of reasons, I can't keep associating myself with it.
For one, people running the show have shown zero interest in rebuilding the bridges that they have burned and healing the damage that they have done. This makes everything they touch feel inherently unfriendly and toxic to me.

Dropping files from GLCache triggers the stutter perfectly. (Just don't forget to shut down Godot first.) And, more importantly, my shader baker works!
3.5 seconds on startup (stretched for many frames so it doesn't completely block the main thread) in exchange for smooth sailing afterwards.

I didn't realize that reliably replicating shader stutter will be the hardest part of implementing a warmup system.
At first deleting `shader_cache` in Godot worked. Then it stopped working and there is no stutter. Is there some cache on the GPU side?!

How is Zed so freaking fast? You open it and it just is, it exists, it is available. You switch projects, and they just are, at your fingertips, that exact moment. WTF.

There should be a term in UI/UX for giving configuration presets loaded names.
Comfortable? For whom? Are other options uncomfortable? Is "Standard" supposed to mean "what others are doing" and thus "Comfortable" is "but we're doing it better"? Describe the option, not how you want me to feel about it.
Same for calling some preset "Modern" in some software. Am I supposed to feel like an obsolete dinosaur for not using it? I hate being manipulated like that :/

@nprofile…8epn I am saying that people started to spell doom for the project like AI companies sponsoring Blender hasn't already been the case for a long time. It was a misplaced anger over project receiving much needed funding with no strings attached.
I think it's much different from integrating "AI" into a project. I think many people don't understand how unstable funding is in FOSS. I think many throw "better it not existed at all if it can't exist without AI money" too easily.

Worth mentioning that Signal is a "type" in GDScript very superficially. It is not backed by a native type in Godot. It's just an interface for some hashmaps.
Engine uses strings and Object methods everywhere, just like GDScript in Godot 3.x did.

Signal declaration in GDScript is just a suggestion.
You can emit any signal with any parameters, and as long as connected methods expect the same exact parameters, it will never err. Oh, and awaiting that signal works in every situation.
There is basically no type safety when it comes to signals.

I played Ace Combat 7 for 10 hours before I realized that the machine gun is not going to be unlocked — it's always available!
The reason for my confusion is that GUN is indicated with "---" where the ammo is for other weapons, and "---" is used as "no info" throughout the UI. GUN is just infinite...
That's 17 missions of the campaign without firing MG once!

Controls in Godot 4.7 will have enforceable maximum size 👀 It's very useful, though I'm wary of the complexity of changes and the use of AI tools in the related PR.

@nprofile…udln Anyhow, my original point was that an image so unstable would be considered a buggy mess 20 years ago. The reasons at the time would be different, as would be the tech. But we'd still criticize games in this kind of state.
And yes, Fallout 4 was a buggy mess at launch with numerous visual bugs.
I don't have top-of-the-line HW. I am bound to play games at unplayable framerates or with constant ghosting from upscaling. Budget or not, games today scale down terribly. And we accept it.

@nprofile…udln This specific recording (as seen in the YouTube video, not my clip) seems very choppy. And it's running on Series X, as per Microsoft's demand for this preview.
I don't know if it uses upscaling already, but in all likelihood it does, with a Quality preset of some sort. No AAA game now runs on consoles without it. Performance mode was locked for the preview.

I know it's a preview build, but I've been told FH5 does the same thing. 20 years ago this kind of flashing and pop-in would be considered a buggy mess. Today it's just what ray tracing and upscaling does to games, and is considered modern visuals.

I use a lot of packed scenes in Godot, and it bothers me that nodes in those scenes are readily accessible early on, but Godot offers no convenient hooks, like onready, for this specific case, and I have to resort to handling a notification by hand.
So I made a proposal

The idea is simple. When it's a script attached to a packed scene, instead of `onready` you'd use `onscene`, and that removes the need to add ready-related safeguards when accessing annotated properties.

The problem could've been avoided if the array's reference/pointer was hashed, not state of its contents. But that would lead to other issues where people would expect a similarly shaped array to match the key, even if it's a different array.

If you're using an array as a dictionary key in GDScript, be careful! Mutating the array will make it impossible to access the original key-value entry.
This is because dictionary keys are hashed, and so array's state is hashed when you create the entry. If you then change the array, hashes won't match.
The array is still referenced in the dictionary correctly. You can see it being mutated correctly. But trying to read the value will fail, and trying to write the value will create a new entry.

Not an avid reader, but I enjoy reading physical books. The smell, the turning of pages. The whole ritual of intently peering into pages to decipher glyphs and symbols written within.
In this digital age books also feel more significant to me. Like, if it was worth it to print it on paper, it's worth it to pay attention and read.

I'd say it has always been about gamification of the process. That's not necessarily a slur either, you can make learning more engaging by introducing elements of play in it. They just went full battle pass grind over providing a service with incentives.

Then they changed for that stupid Candy-Crash-ass gamified "path", and remove all reference materials. Clearly language learning is secondary for these products.

@nprofile…r37z I mean, yes and no. Drops, for example, forces a 10-word sentence about family that a beginner cannot possibly learn just like that. You need to build up to it.
And that's within a recommended topic for beginners, while actual beginner topics (like learning numbers, colors, basic verbs) is hidden.
It's very clear that they give you a bunch of phrases for social situations rather than trying to teach you anything.

We used to have booklets like that, phrases which you could learn phonetically to be a tourist in a foreign land. When your goal is not to learn the language, but to get by.

Finally went through the effort of deleting and archiving most of my GitHub repos. A handful will remain as active mirrors, which will get updated as I work on them. The rest are either gone (no value in preserving + forks), or rendered inactive (has some value).

@nprofile…6l7d Thanks :) A tool like this is very useful for plugin devs and editor hackers, which is not the group normally covered by built-in features.
It would be a very small feature to maintain and provide out of the box though. Same goes for my editor theme explorer. But we already have that as a plugin and we already have Zylann's editor debugger too. Which would be grounds for rejection for the potential proposal.

I was thinking it might be a good alternative to Discord for keeping discussions public and indexable... And yet, I realize now that I've never ended up on those pages when looking up something online.
Setting up your own boards is such a PITA, and a resource hog, especially if you need an email server as well, for registrations.

I already use Codeberg for all new projects, it's really chill!
The only real blocker for me is need to compile C++ for all 3 desktop platforms, and Actions are the only free/cheap way to run on macOS.

@nprofile…5tsq Oh, by the way, it momentarily skipped my mind at the start of our conversation, but in Godot exiting editing and exiting focus for a text field are two different things.
ESC keeps the focus, but hides the caret and prevents input capture for text input. Editing can be re-entered with ENTER. So your concern is actually respected here, which makes the behavior even more bizarre :/

@nprofile…5tsq Yep, it is :) I was pretty confused why it took two ESC presses to exit the text field in my app, until I noticed that my cursor was hovering something elsewhere in the UI, with a tooltip, and it would hide on the first press.
Hiding tooltips on ESC also happens in browsers tho, but they don't consume input like that.
RE TAB: We should end up in the same state as at the startup of the app after hitting ESC. So whatever TAB would focus on first from that point would be IMO sensible.

@nprofile…5tsq Hmm, I'm not sure I agree with your addendum here. As a user of any software, I want to be able to escape focusing anything. TAB is to move somewhere else. ESC is to restore the status quo, IMO.
Though here one of the 3 presented options definitely happens :)

@nprofile…e082 Even if so, don't worry. main.cpp is a mess, and startup order is a complicated subject with race conditions baked into the problem space. Which is why any kind of refactoring has always been postponed.
It's on maintainers to do the due diligence anyway, not on you :)

Something changed in main.cpp between Godot 4.3 and 4.5.1, and now scripted resources loaded with the project theme cause debugger to report bogus errors on startup :/
They still work fine, there is just an validity check failing in the scene debugger code for no good reason.
This means I can't use my scripted textures inside of the theme without causing an error spam. So I have to put them in overrides of individual nodes. Which sucks.

@nprofile…edt8 You have to use relative paths with load/preload.
If `other_script.gd` is next to the script you're trying to include it in, use `preload("./other_script.gd")`.
If it's in a descendant folder, then
`preload("./path/to/other_script.gd")`.
If it's in another folder, then use .. to go up, like `preload("../sibling_folder/other_script.gd")`.
It's a bit annoying at scale, so maybe I should think of some way to help plugin developers.

I think this is by design, so you are not plagued by errors from other people's code if you use others' plugins. But can indeed catch you off guard if you develop some yourself :D

@nprofile…edt8 Oh, interesting. Yeah, coding this I had no code assistance to catch these issues. But interestingly enough, I did run into various crashes from typing and treating warnings as errors.
But anyway, should be an easy fix! Thanks for troubleshooting <3

@nprofile…edt8 I just tried with 4.5.1 mono, and that's certainly not the cause of the issue. Both installation of the hook and execution worked fine.
I'll try a bit more, but do let me know if you figure out anything about your setup or process that might've caused this problem.

🤓 My last cryptic post? I just figured out a way to create and run GLOBAL editor and project manager PLUGINS in Godot!
Limitations apply, but for editor and PM enhancements it's perfectly workable. This is mostly a proof-of-concept, but may grow into something, if there is any interest 👀

@nprofile…lh7t Oh, but the tree already culls items way out of view (otherwise it wouldn't be smooth with thousands of items). I think making items visible just forces them to update, do text shaping, etc, which is expensive. Since all items can affect table layout and column sizes, even culled items need to be accounted for.

🌳 UI trees in Godot are pretty speedy, once the text cache is built. 10k items is like nothing, it scrolls smoothly!
Alas, filtering can be laggy. Hiding a TreeItem is cheap, but making it visible is not. At 10k items, if you set them all visible in a single frame, you'll see the tree hang up for a moment.
Solution? Make items visible in batches! Start by hiding everything immediately, then show, say, 1k items in a frame. Repeat until exhaustion. Replace that hang with responsive UI!

According to Valve, they managed to run pretty much all x86 games (so far) on their new ARM-based PCs thanks to this FOSS project:

🪇 So what's everyone using to make sound effects for their games? I don't mean simple bonks and zinks, but more complex, layered effects.
Packs are an option, of course, but even then you might need to mix things up (and also you might need to go through a lot of packs).

@nprofile…7vf6 I think on BS there is at least an issue with streaming since often the quality improves on some devices or after a few seconds of playback.
But it also probably just compresses more aggressively. It has way more users than any given instance here. I'm honestly surprised by how little compression there is on gamedev.place. That may not last forever though.

@nprofile…lh7t Yeah, the end result of all this will be pretty close to what Selenium does for web. Not sure, though, how useful all that framework be outside of the particular project I'm making it for. Most people don't really need to autotest the editor :)

Tweening on an object you are already tweening on may lead to very tweensical results (and hard to figure out bugs).

Yes, there should be a small delay when the scenes change from this interaction. But unfortunately it cannot be too long to fully appreciate it. Animation is cool, but user expects to see a result of their action.
I will probably shorten the effect too, make it fall off the screen faster. It'd be cool to do something more static with these buttons though!
