I think phones stopped getting better in about 2016. Since then they’ve just got bigger (which I don’t want) and got more features I don’t care about. This makes me irritable. Someone please make a phone company that makes a modern iPhone 5s and a modern Sony Z5 Compact and that’s all.

I couldn't believe that PC Gamer headline was a proper reflection of what was said, but... it was.
The thing which most annoys me is that they seem to believe they have a right to do a damaging thing (which they acknowledge is damaging) in the hope that they might find something impactful to do with it (which they acknowledge they haven't, yet) because there's currently a lot of hype about it, and the only time limit on this is "find something before the hype runs out".

Those of you who are not web devs (good choice) may not quite appreciate what this means.
You know how websites are loads slower now, and don't work without JavaScript? Well, one of the big (dubious) arguments made in favour of this transition was that you download a bunch more code first, but then it'll make everything faster once you're there. It's front loading.
What @npub1pf4…pgxq has shown is that this is not relevant, because people don't stay on the sites long enough to get the benefit.

The point is: ad people used to make up whole songs that you learned the words to, to advertise their products. (“A finger of Fudge is just enough to give your kids a treat!”, “just a-one Cornetto!”, etc)
But (a) they were almost all for food or drink (b) nobody does this any more and hasn’t for forty years. Everyone (my age) knows the words to the Shake’n’Vac song or how Kia-Ora is too orangey for crows, but there aren’t songs for products now.
Are we wrong and there are loads we’ve forgotten?

Last night’s discussion with darling daughter, which I would be interested in thoughts on: does anybody make advertising jingle songs any more? Did they ever for non-edible things?
The rules here are:
* a signature short bit of music (like Intel’s doo-DOO-doo-DOO) is not a jingle song
* neither is a short phrase sung, like “maybe it’s Maybelline” or “Washing machines live longer with Calgon!”
* “any more” means: it hasn’t been standard since I was a kid. No Flake song, or Shake-n-Vac

People have been doing delivery vegetable and recipe boxes for years, but I’ve only just discovered that they do delivery meat boxes as well! That seems like a thing worth trying. Anybody got any recommendations for or against people who do this in the UK? Bonus points if it does deli meats (charcuterie cooked stuff) as well as uncooked. ya. But I think a technical definition isn’t all that helpful here, maybe? I think of this like the (apocryphal) US Department of Defence’s definition of “trust” as “someone who can break your security”; it’s what it actually means, rather than the surface appearance. So is an agent “something which you trust to do things in your name”?

I mean, that’s a true definition, but surely that’s because it’s almost uselessly general? I mean, doesn’t it apply to one of those robots that assembles cars on a production line?
This is not, at all, to demand a million exceptions and caveats to the definition; that’s just irritating pedantry. But… what’s the point in having that definition? Surely the reason to have a definition is to be able to exclude some things from it? And that hardly does.

I don't think so, because cinema attendance in the city has fallen too, and to a first approximation I feel like most people going to cinemas in the city are themselves in the city and don't have to travel for a long time. (I have no evidence for that; it might be wrong!) Quite a lot of ways this could happen; it'd be an interesting project for someone to dig into the data on this!

I wanted to put a video on my website, but I wanted it to adapt to the viewer's bandwidth and screen (you know, how YouTube does, where you get the narrow 240p version if you're on a rubbish mobile connection, but you still get the video). After a bit of research, I worked out how (thank you to Scott Jehl about responsive video via CSS, and mux.com for HLS and ffmpeg instructions) and wrote a quick note in case anybody else needs the same.

if you're feeling investigative, I'd be interested to know whether anybody actually did the "a map with a growing red line shows the route taken" travel montage thing BEFORE Indiana Jones. It feels like something that they took from a thousand previous instances as homage, but I think they might have invented it. They certainly codified it. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TravelMontage lists a few previous instances (Apache from 1954, frex) but I dunno whether that's the same as the iconic Indy image.

sure, but the MPs are verifying themselves against their own personal websites, right? I mean, that's better than nothing, but it's not *that* hard to register kemi-badenoch.biz or whatever, if you're looking to fake people for a few days as recently :)
I agree it's like Parliament email addresses, but they already exist. Convincing them to set up subdomain verification for all MPs sounds like it willl take a while, so doesn't help now. (No reason not to start today, though.)

plus, there's a pretty big tension between "verify the person" and "verify the role", right? this may be hurtful but I mostly care about, say, my MP in her role AS my MP, so she'd be verified as shabana-mahmood.parliament.uk or similar. But then if she leaves Parliament, she has to give the account up, along with all followers etc. (Unless she renames it and loses verification? Although then she can rename it to her own website and verify that? that might work.)

I mean, domain-based verification is fine and all (I've done it!). But I think the Venn diagram of "people who are famous enough that verification is truly important" and "people who connected enough to the tech team at their employer to get them to create a subdomain or DNS fiddling" is quite close to being two circles. It's very useful if you're me, or if you're an org rather than a person. But the institutional inertia required to get it set up if you're a journo or MP feels hard to me

yeah, I just never tear myself away from phanpy, this is true :-)
It is annoying that you can't see how much space a PWA is using, I agree. Literally the only way I know is to check the size of the .webclip in a full backup, which is very awkward. I have filed a feedbackassistant, but we never find out if that gets acted on. Can you know inside phanpy how much space it's taking up? I'm not sure. I can use the dev site to test if that would help; where's that?

just to follow up on this, I checked my backup size again and phanpy was back up to 1.5GB. So I removed the home screen bookmark and added it again, which only took about one minute, but I wanted to report back; you may still be working on fixing this and if so no worries (as I say, it wasn't hard to recover from!) but I thought you'd like to know it's still going on in case you were thinking it was fixed already.

not any kind of actual help with the problem, but I poked at your table a little bit to show the number of years old each Android version was and that made scanning down the table quite a bit clearer: you can see that lots of them are very old and a few are not-that-old. Might be a useful thing to do to help people grasp the table more intuitively (especially if done a little more prettily than this quick bodge I did)

in addition... there is currently no very good solution out there for the majority of people for transferring your active OTP codes between devices, or between OTP apps, or between the phone you dropped in the bath and the new one you've bought on ebay. I am v reluctant to even have non-technical users such as my parents switch from SMS auth (which they get) to an OTP app (which may not be backed up usefully), let alone to only use OTP so if you lose the code your account is unrecoverable

1. Give money to the open source projects which are probably 90% of your code base. $2000 per developer on your staff, although you can and should do better than that. (@npub1hhf…qrnt are doing better than that.)
2. Report every year on whether and how you did it.
This seems like a good idea today, and a thing where non-participation should feel weird tomorrow.

no worries. I removed the app and re-added it, which took about one minute, and that reduced the size. Good to hear that the underlying size is being fixed though; a gigabyte is a lot of storage to be using! So thank you for that!

This is an iCloud Backup Settings problem, and it's not exactly the only one, since "why is my iCloud Backup bigger than it ought to be" is a common question. Still, this is very useful to have found out. Also, it might stop me playing Wordle every day, although I can doubtless re-add it now!

HA HA HA HA HA HA I have found out why my iPhone iCloud backup was larger than 5GB but there was no way to reduce its size!
Turns out... if you bookmark a web app to your Home Screen then its data is included in your iCloud backup. This is very good! Nice one Apple.
But it doesn't show up in the "Backup Details" list of apps in your iCloud Backup settings, so you don't know where the space is gone. This is not as good. I shall file a bug.

Well, America, having just watched that debate, if Biden doesn't drop out, there will never ever be a better chance for an actual independent candidate to run and win and stop the two-party system, at least a bit. It'd still be shockingly hard for them to win, but someone who can galvanise real people rather than nutters (and everyone under 50) and credibly claim to be and represent the best of America... I think they'd be in with a real shout, here, if they do it quick and do it right.

Here’s the thing I don’t get: even if you’re a Tory who thinks rules only apply to the little people, and even if you know when the “snap” election is ahead of time, and even if you care so little for your public image that you think you can blow right through something as callous as cheat betting on the election date with insider knowledge… why would do you it? Fucking hell, France, what are you up to. The UK has leaned really badly towards the fash in recent years but, thank god, we seem to be leaning back again, and we might even be in for a Tory whitewash which would be excellent. The EU elections in general seem to suggest that people may be pulling back from voting for the fash, at least hopefully. But France… man, that’s not good, what’s going on there.
