All my work on Liblast is halted due to a blocking freeze bug.
I have a live presentation and workshop coming up in 4 weeks that depends on this tech, and I can't do anything at the moment.

Art is a kind of human communication that transcends space and time.
It's not the end product that matters, it's who, why and how made it.
This is why I think after the generative large machine learning models hype dies down, we'll find appropriate uses for them, and genuine art will never go away. The spirituality is a part of what makes us human. We can make a perfect simulation of a human mind, but we can't create a soul. Photography didn't kill paintings.

It's official. I am now a proud owner of a Fairphone 6. Let's see how long can I keep it running. My previous phone was OnePlus5T, it lasted about 8~9 years and still works, but got really slow and memory-restricted (64 GB storage, no sdcard). I am looking into repurposing the old OnePlus as a small server using PostmarketOS. We'll see. So far the FairPhone 6 works fantastic. I am very fond of the 120 Hz OLED display on it.

I have started watching Star Trek The Next Generation. So far (season 1) I find the show incredibly well written, inspiring, wholesome. Just what I needed.
Especially since I've been writing some sci-fi myself for a game I am working on.
Watching the show could be seen as researching the genre ;)
I find the optimistic view of humanity and the spirit of the Enterprise's crew... uplifting. And the ideas for many episodes could be extended into longer pieces. I am really impressed.

I am working on a new single-player game. It's a great test bed for technology and #FOSS based workflow I have created for @npub1jxa…xr5u but I wanted to create a short, complete experience, and release that as a commercial game. If that succeeds, it will bring me one step closer to doing open-source- and Linux-based game development full time. I'll also bring my work back into #Liblast and #LiblastFramework so it's available for all. Who knows, maybe I could even get back to making video tutorials?

Did you know that #KDE 's KRunner accessible via Alt+F2 hotkey(combination) can do simple math, convert units and currencies for you?
All of that offline. No need to query a web search engine or use a web browser at all, not to mention asking a large language model that'd probably give you wrong results at a million times higher computational, memory and energy cost than what this launcher does.

I wonder if splicing straight segments into the middle of these curves would still keep 1st and 2nd derivatives continuous...
Because then these could be used to speed up. slow down but otherwise keep the middle section at "full speed".
When a machine has a speed limit, it would peak at some point.
Not sure how am I going to do that though...

Simplified and unbounded forms - if you clamp inputs to [0,1] it should give the same results.
Position: y=(sin((2x-1) * pi/2)+1)/2
Speed: y=(cos((2x-1) * pi)+1)/2

So working on @npub1jxa…xr5u I have recently wanted to add some basic sound to Movers (lifts, doors, etc). I realized that making a motorized platform move with beliveable sound is not trivial. My constraints are: it has to be fully deterministic - the mover is lerping a value of `move_progress` between 0 and 1. So no smoothing over time is allowed
0 is rest position, 1 is target position (say with a simple lift it's floor 0 and floor 1 for example). It has to believably speed up and slow down.

There are some very powerful and unique processors here, especially unique in the space of FOSS plug-ins.
The official builds are sold commercially, the developers ask politely that people don't publish their own builds (so they can fund continued development).
If you've never used them - try them!
Old builds were on Archive.org (when the official repos were gone for years).

... in modern shooters you almost always spawn with all your gear, ready to go and make someone wish they hadn't been behind your crosshair today. Even good old Counter-Strike does this (with caveats - moneh!).
In classic arena shooters you spawn with the wimpiest of weapons, and a limited ammo supply to boot.
All of the "good guns" are only available to you, once you find them in the map and pick them up - either fresh from an item spawn, or blood-stained after you've downed an opponent ...

... the goal of the game is to score the most frags (kills) on your opponents. The more and faster you can kill, the better you are at the game.
Newbies give you same bang-for-blood as untouchable experts of the game. So why make things hard? You plow through the n00bs!
This means that unskilled players are the primary target. Just by joining a server where nobody knows you, and showing little skill paints a huge bulls' eye on your back...
Things are about to get SO much worse for you ...

Oh, wow. yeah, that too. Mine did that all the time, before Suspend stopped working.
But it also did that with Hibernate.
Some of the USB devices must be doing it - on Windows I managed to disable all USB wakeup. On Linux I only was able to figure out how to do that temporarily (probably had to write a systemd service for that I guess?

So last week Arch Linux on my desktop started freezing during resuming from #hibernation.
My attempts at fixing that have only made it freeze while entering hibernation as well.
I did manage to get suspend to RAM working though, which is better than nothing, but won't cut it for me.
Having no hibernation is gonna wreck my workflow.
I am dual booting and hibernation allows me to make that work.

I have been on the lookout for a sensible Gboard replacement that wasn't making my (voice) typing experience painful, and so far only FUTO Keyboard managed to provide that.
It has really good offline voice typing as well, which is something I use a lot.

#EliTheComputerGuy is an OG video educator. He's been making educational videos before YouTube was a thing. And despite having a million subscribers on YT, his videos have usually views in the tens of thousands, and not hundreds of thousands as you'd expect.
He must've made some enemies at YouTube HQ, because he is doing excellent work teaching about technology.

Here's a KDE Plasma 6 power feature you probably had no idea existed.
Hit Meta+T on your keyboard.
You can define tiles on each of your screens.
Now grab a window and hold shift - it will snap to the closest tile!
This way you can arrange windows on your screen(s) in a way that will keep them sharing your screen's area without ever overlapping.
Doing this manually always took so much time and was so fiddly...

I belive that generative machine learning (so called "AI") will ultimately show us what is really important in life. It's tangible relationships with people. Any form of genuine human expression, including art is also feeding our relationship to the creator and ourselves. But if we replace that with machine-generated approximation of a real human expression, we are loosing that and becoming isolated. Alone.
Cherish people around you, make more time to be with them.

I'm trying to revive an old ASUS #T100HA transformer tablet/laptop.
I've installed Arch, and unlike a couple years ago the WiFi, audio, Bluetooth and a couple of other things work out of the box!
What doesn't work are the cameras (back and front).
There is (finally!) a driver for the camera chips available:

But I don't know yet how to compile it as a module on Arch and load it.
Maybe somebody smart would be able to make a PKGBUILD for that?

EON is a demo that rips apart the limitations of Amiga 500. Rendering real-time, animated & shaded character models, among other things.
There's some great lessons for game developers and programmers in general in here.
TL;DW: Find or invent hard limits. Then work backwards. What is the maximum number? Once you define it, then you can figure out worst case scenarios and optimize to meet your performance and memory budget.

Extremism always brings violence. No matter what you're pushing - ends don't justify the means. It's natural for humans to want to enact "righteous" violence. We want to be part of a group and feel like we're making the world a better place. The feeling is so enticing, we're letting ourselves slip into it. We want to be "right" about something and it feels amazing to be on the "right side" of a conflict. It's empowering, it tickles our ego, makes us feel supreme.
It's a trap of hubris. Don't.

I'm testing another #libre #video-editor called #Pitivi.

What's unique about it is that's is based upon GStreamer, not the ubiquitous (and unfortunately not great ) MLT framwork.
I've tested Pitivi like a half decade ago (or more?) and it has made really nice progress.
Since my beloved Olive crashes every 5 minutes for me, I've been on the lookout for any viable alternatives to do some bare miniumum video cutting, and Pitivi might be fine.

I've been playing some #CounterStrike 2 lately. I only really play #deathmatch or arms race - no sweating necessary :D
I find it quite relaxing, but also stimulating (when I'm sleepy) also quite inspiring for my work on #Liblast. It's incredible that CS has been around for like 25 years now and the game never fell off the map. The game design has been pretty much unchanged for 2+ decades and it seems to just work. It's like chess. The game is almost cannonical at this point :D
