A lot of the lessons in my history classes didn't make logical sense to me. I found it confusing.
I later learned that this was because of whitewashing. The shit they were presenting to us didn't make sense without the context they were withholding.

Which #fedi instances have a hard-line stance against #genAI to the point where they are exceptionally careful about the state of the OS the instance is running on?

I have decided to shut down my #mastodon instance, and all my public facing web services.
This will happen in 3 months time, on November 29, 2026, to allow everyone to backup and migrate.
The reason for this is that I can no longer trust:
- the #Linux kernel
- #Debian
- rails
- most #Foss projects
Additionally, I'm basically out of storage, it is unaffordable to purchase more, and no one is interested in donating to help.
Our bastion of free computing has been poisoned by fascist gen ai slop, and basically NONE of it can be trusted anymore.
It's impossible to vet slop from an ecosystem that is welcoming of it.
This makes it nearly impossible to update my systems, which makes it harder to pretend it's even remotely secure.
I'm fucking devestated - gutted by what has happened to computing, and I just do not have the resources to keep fighting.
Fuck all you #LLM boosters into the sun. May you learn the folly of your way and DO SOMETHING TO FIX IT!

Even down here on the east coast, and specifically our little sheltered and special climate zone we are now experiencing regular drought, high floods, forest fires, incect collapse, warmer winters, hotter summers.
What is really alarming are all the days above 10°c in January and February.
The best part? Our province is currently trying to build TWO LNG-burning power plants - both with us supply agreements. NB is already the largest polluter in atlantic canada.

A Molotov cocktail is very easy to make.
You need:
- a breakable glass bottle or jar
- a rag
- a flamable liquid (gas, diesel, kerosene, etc)
Optional:
- a cork or lid
- fill a few inches of the bottle with sand or gravel to give some weight to it.
Put some sand in your bottle/jar. Fill most of the way up with flamable liquid but leave space at the top. Stuff the rag into the bottle, leaving a tail hanging outside the bottle. Place the cork or lid on to prevent spils.
Use:
- hold in your throwing hand
- light the wick
- throw

They are attempting to build a #LNG powered #ai #datacentre in our community, literally abutted against a massive nature preserve, and unbelieveable coastal hiking trails.
No one wants it. The mayor and counsel lie about it with every breath saying it's not a done deal. The billboards are all over town.
Myself and many members of my community will commit sabotage against it at every stage.
This is a given.

I've noticed a very slow trickle of fake accounts registering at my instance recently. They put more work into them than normal:
- they have somewhat convincing usernames
- semi-reasonable descriptions
- emails on custom domains (Hetzner vps usually)
- unique IP per account (often same subnet)
- uploads a profile pic & banner image
- some of them boost a few posts from admin acct
But then these accounts just sit there. They aren't spamming. What is their goal?

One of my favourite features of the #fediverse is seeing people *learning things*. There are so many folks here discovering dying arts and trades. People learning how the things we take for granted work, and endeavouring to implement them themselves!
People getting their #HAMradio licenses, #selfhosting, making clothing, blacksmithing, gardening, repairing their own things, backporting modern software to run on windows 3.11...
Y'all are my people. Never stop learning, and never stop sharing what you've learned.

Hi, I'm Sean.
I'm from the oldest incorporated city in so-called #canada, #SaintJohn - home of the #irving empire.
I am an iconoclast - staunchly #antifascist, #antiracist, #anticapitalist, somewhere on the #autism spectrum, and 3 years into punishing #LongCovid. #WearAMask!!!
I've worked the last decade as #HeadOfSound at a beautiful heritage #theatre. Before that I was in #tech for a decade doing #development and #reverseEngineering. I've also worked in #electronics and other #audio fields.
I grew up in a musical family and have played in bands since 13. I'm on around 60 albums, have toured canada and the us, and am part of what is likely the most prolific band in canada: #Slugmilk.
I run a home mixing studio and a small printshop and I have a small "datacentre" which #selfhosts this #mastodon instance.
I'm here on the #fedi to learn from everyone, and to help others learn. I will help anyone with anything I can.
I'd love to meet more like-minded friends - don't be shy!

I just finished reading "More Everything Forever" by Adam Becker.
It explores the delusions of tech CEOs, the philosophers they follow, and the sycophants and zealots who cling uncritically to their every whim.
TL; DR:
- AGI won't happen
- space colonisation won't happen
- billionaires must not exist
Thanks to @npub1vc3…axsh for the recommendation!

Asking because this is my experience and it does not feel normal.

Today is a GREAT day to begin your #selfhosting journey, if you haven't already!
Tired of paying billionaires to make life on earth worse for everyone, in exchange for a few trinkets and a load of hostility?
You can replace:
- #spotify -> #navidrome
- #youtube -> #peertube
- #netflix etc -> #jellyfin
- #gsuite -> #nextcloud
- #google #bing etc -> #SearxNG
- #whatsapp etc -> #xmpp
- and so much more!
Any steps you take to reduce your interactions with BigTech is a win for you, me, and humanity!
Need help? Drop me a line!

Boy oh boy... Its 2025 but I sure am seeing a lot of #URLShortener links here.
A lot of people refuse to click shortened links.
Why?
Because most link shortening services are commercial. They are not free. You pay in data.
They can also be misused, captured and redirected.
The good news is, you don't need them on the #fedi! Put any URL of any length in your post and it will count as 25 characters - no shortener required!

Nextcloud is incredible, and it's not too bad to host if you're fairly familiar with the processes.
One thing I CANNOT recommend strongly enough is to spend the time to follow ALL (applicable) tuning & hardening steps as laid out in their guide. Before I took that time, the performance was not very good, despite running on a powerful box. What helped me the post was tuning php-fpm, adding redis and apcu cache and dialing in opcache.
Best of luck on your project!

I wonder if it's possible to put a #mastodon instance behind a subdomain like mastodon.mydomain.com while the instance THINKS it is behind mydomain.com by re-routing requests for .well-known to the subdomain.
The reason for this would be so users could have @myUser@mydomain.com instead of @myUser@mastodon.mydomain.com, leaving mydomain.com free for a landing page or something else.
You can do this with #matrix, as explained here:
https://github.com/spantaleev/matrix-docker-ansible-deploy/blob/master/docs/configuring-well-known.md

It would appear that the vast majority of #mastodon and #fediverse #relays which are publicly listed are no longer online.
In fact, I've only found ONE that works currently - one my former instance used as well.
Relays are critical for new instances, as an out-of-the-box instance doesn't "know" about ANY instances. This means that you see ZERO posts. A user on the instance must manually follow a remote account by finding the URL for the user, pasting it into search, and then following.
Then, the instance the user belongs to is known by you instance.
There are THOUSANDS of instances. This is where relays come in. Relays provide a gateway to small instances that "teaches" it about other instances.
If you know of any active relays, hook a fella up!
