The problem is primarily hardware support. Which *can* be mitigated by rump kernel approaches among others (though that may instead lead to higher requirements than first-class support).

@nprofile…lsku Indeed, but that's a minor issue as Language-Based Security and Capabilities alike can achieve adequate isolation in a monolithic system.
Simply provide no unstructured direct access to memory to the language and system interfaces. Then everything has to operate with references as de-facto capabilities.
Same or greater performance can be achieved as a lot of the indirections necessary in weaker languages are obsoleted by this.
Microkernels are way to achieve that proper despite C's limitations.

Similar to the one you get with Doom Eternal or ULTRAKILL.
It does require the game to make failing/dying not a punishing experience, unlike roguelikes, otherwise it rapidly becomes less fun.

@nprofile…wjlp Mostly you go to businesses that make custom e-bikes and you simply specify the kind of cells you want used in the battery they'll assemble for it.
(Of course this means you need one of the businesses that also does custom batteries.)
A lot of the off-the-shelf bikes assume a specific form-factor & connector shenanigans that can be a problem.
A lot don't, but given the weather here I'd need something that can has decent ingress protection, which means a plain container battery & connectors bolted onto the frame isn't an option, more care than just that is required.
(Obviously I'd store it inside, the bike and the battery, but it still needs to be able to cope with water & snow.)

Regarding electric kettles? Ignore them, they're garbage that will fail within a few years at most.
Get yourself a stovetop kettle. You can use them with a resistive heat plate/stove, camping fire-based equipment or these days even with induction equipment (adapters also exist if you already have such a kettle that isn't compatible).
That way you get something that will last considerably longer, is sometimes repairable, costs about the same and that you can still use during power outages.

One of the downsides of automatic coffee makers is that by virtue of how they work they pretty much guarantee slightly-burnt coffee by using water that's too hot and then having a keep-warm hot plate that further cooks it while the rest is still brewing.
On the upside they're automatic and usually not high maintenance if don't have hard water (some of them have very inconvenient shapes that makes washing them a nightmare though).
French presses on the upside allow you to use water at a proper 80~90℃ that won't burn coffee and makes the most out of even cheapass defreshened coffee.
The downside is that you *have* to clean them for basically every use and doing so in an adequately hygienic way requires taking them apart entirely. With a dishwasher that's not a problem, without it's really obnoxious.
Another upside though is that they outlive automatic makers considerably in my experience (that's why I switched, I was annoyed with their stupid ≤3 year lifespan) and replacing parts that fail is actually possible without having to mess with glue solvants and all sorts of nonsense as one would need to repair an automatic maker (which probably doesn't sell spare parts anyway so good luck if anything cracked or ruptured in the fluid-containing parts).

@nprofile…9xu8 @nprofile…7l9w The solution is key-addressed overlay networks. IPv4 & IPv6 are a routing layer, not an a transport layer you can reasonably use directly.
In comparison, IPv4 address is either CGNAT or pooled.
My "dynamic" IPv4 did not change for the entirety of my contract with my last two ISPs. (It changed on contract and remained stable the entire time. Through hours long/half-day power outages, even.)
So that's also not meaningfully useful for privacy.

Hmmm... the main way I could be happy with those retrocomputer projects would require just mostly foregoing the notion of working in RAM and largely just going full-persistent, with RAM being the minimal working-memory.
Without fast persistent storage that would be pretty slow. On the other hand, it would make power fluctuations and such barely do anything as almost no state would ever truly be volatile.

Hmm... is there good electronics/circuit simulation Free Software, such that one could design and test a circuit in its entirety without having to spend absurd sums learning it with physical hardware & parts? And the same on prototyping?
That's an acceptable sum to spend on a complete project one intends to use in the long term, for example. But one needs to get there in the first place.

I wonder why nothing like gtk-server exists for Qt.
It seems to expect Qt to be driving the program, rather than the program to be using Qt.
An inversion of control that requires a whole lot more Qt-specific code getting written to talk to a daemon.
If one's language lacks Qt bindings (or recent-enough ones), it ends up very unpleasant indeed, as one now has to be the one to make such bindings.

@nprofile…4xv8 For the superintelligence type, while technically possible (within a few constraints physics imposes), I think its creation by something less intelligent is very unlikely.
I also think that even if it did happen, there's no particular reason it would necessarily want to have anything to do with its creators.
As for conventional intelligence, I do not think there are any magic meat shenanigans that should make it impossible for it to be instantiated in a different medium.

@nprofile…8kc4 @nprofile…shek I'm tempted to say you should lookup suicide rates in rural areas, particularly between 1920~1990, in places where either the Catholic or Orthodox church were relevant, but the problem with that is that as I said, they weren't recorded as suicides in very large proportion.
If you happen to live in such a place though, ask your parents or grandparents about it.
You didn't ask family for help, you didn't admit it to family either. Ideally you killed yourself from overwork, or alcohol or something similar (if your particular kind of dysfunction permitted that) and avoided the entire question.

Ah that's unfortunate.
The KDE widgets fail to implement it? It would be nice to see that improve, particularly since it's one of the few sane options for desktop Delta Chat (Electron-driven abominations are not good options).
, I think there is also an issue of why someone would want to use a toolkit without accessibility tooling, at least for new apps.
Well, for Tk mostly because it's a lot less annoying to use for a simple one-off utility.
(And then before long it turns into a not-a-one-off at all long-term utility that does a lot more than it was originally thought or intended to.)
For McCLIM because it's native to the language and has a much more interesting approach to the representation of interface modes (there's nothing preventing accessibility support being added to it, its architecture might even allow it to take better to it than many others, it just needs someone dedicated and with the right skills & know-how to get it done).
Also Gtk & Qt are awful to interface with using FFI and having to autogenerate FFI from a parser is gross (this is how Qt bindings work in most languages).
Tk gets around that by enabling remote-controlling via pipes (typically), which is something Gtk & Qt could absolutely have enabled (there's some third-party Gtk-server that does that, though I think it fell back in supported versions).
The use of something like BMessages for interface control (yes, this made GUIs sanely scriptable on BeOS/Haiku) would also have gotten around that. Instead we have to deal with C++ having basically no stable ABI (it technically does, unlike Rust, but how practical it is for interop & FFI is a different matter) and assuming people use similar or identical languages (or have gone through a lot of work to hide the impedance mismatch, as with Java (either the options are very obvious generator output or they required a lot of manual massaging) or LQML (possible solely through Common Lisp having implementations in those very same or similar languages)(not to be confused with an identically-named LLM slop project)).
Of course with Java there's Swing and JavaFX which do have their own accessibility integration (I had been under the impression it had no Open Source or Free Software mobile support but apparently I was mistaken, it does).

That being said for accessibility and development, there *are* major hurdles for developers: If you make your GUI with Tk, McCLIM or other smaller or less common GUI frameworks, they frequently *lack* accessibility tooling.
The kind of skills & knowledge require to *make* accessibility tooling are considerably more and different than those required to merely use it. Especially with frameworks that make it basically automagically handled like Qt & Gtk.

Who cares?
It was literally the thought experiment asked. The fact no one does is irrelevant.
Hastening the system falling over under its own dysfunction is not keeping it working with minimal resources unless you have a very generous definition of "working".
And yet, despite all that, humans still do better at somewhat-durable dynamic systems.
They still do better at semantic and logical reasoning (making a computer worse at logic than a human is an achievement, if a very dubious one).
And they're more expensive.
Not even remotely. The actual costs of the logistical chain behind "AI"? Ridiculous.
