this is probably not what you wany to read, and I'm sorry if I misread your situation, but I'm not very positive there is. In her mind she is absolutely right to do what she does, and she has inserted herself in a group that will keep reinforcing and calcifying the righteousness of all her choices. In her eyes, your or my path are the risky ones. Why think? If I adhere to the social performances handed to me, I'm protected, I'm untouchable.
Of course this is not true. She is constantly under attack by reality and other ways of life. The only way she could get out is if what her toxic community offer in terms of safety is less than what is offered outside. If "the community" offers way less than "living with my mum", and if enough breaches in social contracts creates a safe role for her to play martyr or victim, so she can keep her social capital in the transition.
Any which way, this whole situation sucks, and I wish you didn't have to go through it. Sending you a big hug!

I'm very happy to finally publish my first romhack: The Legend of Zelda - Zelda's Awakening DX.
TLOZ: Zelda’s Awakening DX is a hack of the GameBoy Color game TLOZ: Link’s Awakening DX. The base game in its mechanics and objectives have not been touched at all, your objective is still gathering the Eight Instruments and waking the Wind Fish. However, Link has been completely replaced with an adapted rendition of Zelda’s appearance in Echoes of Wisdom.
The script has been perused and edited so all dialogues are now directed towards a female person (some words which don’t have a specific gender associated have been left untouched, like runt or kid)
All sprites and in-game graphics have been redrawn and replaced by hand with YY-CHR. The palettes that gave Link its distinct green color have been swapped by the Hylian blue from Zelda’s cloak, and it becomes a lighter hue once certain conditions are fulfilled.
The patch is a single Lunar IPS file. The hack has been tested in TLOZ: LADX v1.2 with no issues.

Well, against my own forecasts, I finished with all sprites today! They were done with Link as a base and many were slight modifications, but still got the thirty or so out of the way already.
There's still heavy lifting to do: besides the opening, which is the hardest single part of the hack by far, there's fourteen full screen bitmaps to edit or redraw. Those are just redraws though, no palette swapping hell like in the intro.
I ran both the original and the hack one beside the other, and already there's things to improve. I hadn't noticed, but Link's hat and cowlick flip flop when he moves, and that adds a bit of whimsy to his stroll. I checked Echoes of Wisdom and I can get the same feeling of movement with Zelda's cloak or hairbun. We'll see tomorrow!

Another fortunate thing is that Link's hair in the GBC games is stylized in a way that it falls on his forehead, coloured black. It covers the top of his eyes, so it looks like he's constantly frowning.
Sculpting a Zelda that's quick to distinguish from his sprite is easier, as her face is uncovered, and her hair kept with her tiara. Her eyelashes give her more personality.

Thank God ROMs from this age use so much sprite-mirroring. Literally cuts some of the work in half. Both Zelda's and Link's designs are symmetrical too, so besides poses and shading to further give depth I don't have to be too alert with details.

Well, I'll wrap it up with the romhack today. I cannot wait to write the devlog for this, so you can read with your own eyes my advanced Neandertoad methodology.
Jokes aside, once I finish this project I'm curious to see suggestions of what ways I could've done things better. I'm having lots of fun my way though :9

Chrono Trigger & Final Fantasy IV
These two come in a bundle, as I first got 'em in their combo edition for the PS1. I remember thinking I bought 'a modern game', like, say, Final Fantasy 7 (this was the year 2001). Imagine my dismay as Final Fantasy IV's opening sequence. A 16-bit orchestra beating my ears as chonky airships travel a flat world, no 'real 3D' in sight. I was not gonna get another game for that year, so I stuck to it, and I cannot be more glad that I did.
These two games were the first time I took the format seriously. As an added bonus, the contrast between 4 and Trigger made the latter feel a lot more current than it was. FF4's stereotypical plot and characters gave me an insight into tropes, and Trigger's deeper, intertwined storytelling and time-traveling aspect further challenged those concepts of what a fantasy adventure 'ought and ought not to be'. Of the two, Trigger has had a stronger effect on me. Its powerful optimism and hope, the weight of connections and friendship, thinking outside the box and being resourceful and hinting to a bigger, livelier world than depicted on screen still shape how I see games and the real world at large.

Croak there! I've seen this meme pop around in my circles, and here I am, a month or so late, to give my unsolicited opinion.
My intention with this list is to give a bird-eye view over my experience as a strange toad man that has played games since his tadpole days, and how every work has left different impressions on me. Echoing Saint-Exupéry, the same game has given me different things to chew on depending on when I (re)visited it.

another thing. Facebook is still used a lot in Latin America. You might find a group for expats in Uruguay. We also use Marketplace a lot for used stuff, and like Craigslist it's always worth a check.
There's usually weekend faires where you can get local produce and secondhand stuff. If you ever need help in English and you're far from a government building or your consulate, go check the libraries or the public universities during the morning. If you explain your situation slowly they'll get you someone from English Studies and they'll be happy to help.

I have a quest(ion) for you peeps:
Most kids here interact with their first computer when they get to high-school (13yo here), so I want to make a game library of classics and indies for my kiddos age 13 to 18. My idea is that:
1. They have DRM-free fully patched games to play that do not require internet connection to function at a basic level, so single-player or at most LAN capable games with single-player are encouraged. (Couch coop like Worms is fine, too.)
2. They can play something without the present day enshittified gambling boogaloo mechanics, so we can tackle the gambling epidemic a bit earlier from at least this angle,
The list will obviously feature the most accessible from GOG.com's list of Good Old Games, like Fallout 1+2, Neverwinter Nights, Skyrim, Dungeon Keeper, Theme Hospital, Simcity 3000, Civ 4 and Planescape: Torment, amongst others. I'd also add Sims 2 or 3.
Now, what else would you add to that list? Space is cheap nowadays, so if you suggest a game it will almost assuredly be added to the game library for these kiddos to enjoy.
