I used to have one like this except it was an iClever knockoff and folded lengthwise, to about the size of a pencilbox. A bit narrow but I have small hands and not folding crossways meant it could be used on less stable surfaces.

Replacement earpads are widely available for most headphone types at this point, including common JBL models; I have changed the earpads on Bose and JPL headphones before, it was not difficult. Probably you can find some.

Jumping in sideways here, but if a software engineer wanted to look for work doing this sort of thing, what would be a good way to search? I'm not familiar with the terms archeologists use to describe these roles.

Location data is in my opinion probably worth an "adjust settings so this is harder to hit without user interaction", as you suggested up-thread, for people with moderate risks. It has a nasty tendency to be possible to refine over time, in the hands of persistent stalkers.
