How many of you finally gave up on writing software for a living and went into writing?
I'm asking because I'm thinking about refocusing my efforts and... I... I can't _invest_ myself into software right now. The... The space for ethical, engineered software (as opposed to 'just fucking get it done now!') seems _really_ small.

Just a _for example_ Steam requires the user to select a birth date when creating an account. There are a lot of Steam users with the birth date of January 1, 1900.
That still meets the requirements of this new law.
(I'm not justifying, I'm not excusing it, I'm saying... This _one_ thing... Isn't as bad as it could've been.)

I don't wanna _understate_ this at all because I'm not a fan of Newsom, and fuck age consent for software use. If I can figure out how to run it... I'm old enough. It's not like it's a fucking firearm.
All of that to say, the law, as written, requires users to _declare_ their age and to send a 'signal' to any app store. It doesn't require _proof_ of age like a government ID.
So... Not the _worst_ thing ever but absolutely a shit fucking choice for no good reason.

It such a shame we invest in systems meant to predict crime assuming we can calculate primary drivers of criminal behavior (much of which _has_ to be economic)...
Similar systems or tooling (if it ever worked) should be able to point to critical areas needing economic support or community functions and _no one_ has ever invested in technology like this.

I don't think that's the _only_ space in which software should exist. I think it's the appropriate space for open-source software.
I make a living selling my services as a developer. I'm not opposed to that.
Everything has _nuance_. No rule is applicable in _every_ situation. I just think that in the matter of social networks we're seeing a significant backlash towards corporate social media. I'm not surprised to see that frustration _shared_ here on a non-corporate platform.

I was always very impressed with the folks who grew up as humanists. I had to learn it. It wasn't intuitive to _me_.
Lotta time, exposure to the real world. Little bit of travel courtesy of the United States Air Force. Meeting people who weren't from my family or hometown.
Different ideas. Just... Exposure, really. Started me down a path of asking questions, learning about others, and empathy in humanist terms.

I grew up in a very conservative home. Mom and I churched three times-a-week at a minimum. I was "filled with the fire of the holy ghost!" from a very young age.
It was a long, steady movement towards a more humanistic view and as an adult in my late forties I couldn't be further away from my religious roots.
This has directly impacted my view of politics and people in general. It's been a ride.

Most of the people in positions of trust and authority are decent-ish people.

Putin doesn't view a ceasefire as a cessation of hostilities. It's an opportunity to reorganize his resources. Troops, equipment, ammunition, etc.
It's a pause that lasts exactly as long a Putin wants it to.

Who the fuck likes private insurance?
I pay almost $800 a month for private insurance for myself and my spouse. A trip to the ER still costs us $400 just to get in the door. This doesn't touch the facility fees and the individuals doctors who'll need to be paid for whatever we're there for. Usually in the area of $500 - $1000.
We frequent the ER about 4 times a year.
You want me to believe that subsidized government insurance would cost us more than that?
Pffft.

So, when I say I don't want to work. It might mean that I don't want to take out the trash, carry heavy things, or give up my finite life moments in exchange for a fiat currency.

From a physics context work means to move something.
From a economic context work means to trade bits of one's life for a little money.
From a homemaker's context work means to do the things that make existing with other people bearable.

Oh, absolutely.
I'm not interested in absolute idleness. I am a fan of simply being present and that can be perceived as idleness but that perception is still based in the belief that work is holy.
I love to work on things that feel meaningful. I love to work on things that make other people's lives better. I love learning. I love sharing what I've learned with others.
These things aren't an option as a focus in the current construct.

I've often flabbergasted other folks by telling them that I don't want to work. It's not a point of pride to give my effort and energy to someone else in exchange for being able to live.
I'm not earning my keep. I'm getting the most someone else is willing to give for my knowledge, energy, experience, and effort. It's almost certainly not a fair trade.
If I was able to live comfortably without doing this 'work' I would. You can't make me feel shame for that.
