You really don't need that much power for home use. A 1080p movie only needs about 5mbs. If you have 1G nic and switches, the network is the bottleneck, not the drives or cpu. You could use a refurbished Dell tower etc and shove a bunch of drives in it. You can get 24TB HDDs now.
What I do is use Kodi and have a script that fusemounts the server fs when Kodi loads using ssh keys for an account that has read only permissions over sftp only (no ssh terminal access). Then the script umounts when Kodi closes. Same for retroarch etc. So my kids can use it and I don't have to worry about losing shit.

I have a shit ton of computers too. I was putting linux on two old i7s the other day, while I ripped photos from an old windows drive to my wife's i5-14xxx, while I listened to music on my i5-14xxx, which is piped from my server via pulse from mpd, while I updated two laptops... while I back my big server to its mirror. That's not all of my computers. There's more.... 😏

When I come across something, it's usually some shit site that wants you to click through for every file so you see adds. I usually inspect the page first to see if there's an obvious pattern. If not, I build a map and use read with wget.

The only thing I don't like about the default is that I prefer Konsole, and zsh with p10k. I honestly try to stay in terminal as much as possible. If there's a ncurses or bubble tea app, those are my first choice. I recently even found tgpt, so I can use various AI providers from cli and dump directly to log.
