So my grandmother’s four kinds of cancer (multiple myeloma, bone cancer, melanoma, and squamous cell) has turned into five as it has spread to her brain.
I can’t imagine she has much longer but she’s not even officially on hospice yet because she was still getting treatments through Friday, possibly in a little denial.
My aunt and uncle (they’re not much older than me; this is my dad’s young stepmom but she’s always been my grandmother) have both taken leaves of absence and have hired help.

My iPhone has this lovely feature where the mail app shows me all the inboxes for my four email addresses.
My MacBook… used to? Now it doesn’t. I don’t know how to change it but I hate it. I don’t want to look at one inbox at a time.

I just looked up my car's blue book value and it is $1600.
I love this because it is comfortable and drives fine (2013 Hyundai) and I don't worry about scratches or theft like my friends with nice cars.
Also it only has 120,000 miles so I'm hoping I can keep it for ages. (I only drive about 4,000 miles a year or less)

I was walking to China basin park (I love it) when the giants game let out, so the sidewalk was obviously super crowded l. In general, Giants fans are pretty nice and everyone was in a good mood because we won so people were carefully moving around each other as you do on a crowded sidewalk when there are old people and kids and everyone’s kind of united.
But twice there was a big white dudebro walking the opposite way of me, looking right at me and clearly assuming I’d move because they were big and intimidating.
I walked right slam into them on purpose to show that women get to take up space too and both were REALLY not expecting it and the look on their faces felt sooooo good.

My bike is much harder to ride and I’m much slower than used to be.
This may be because I haven’t been riding my bike for months but it feels like something is going on with the bike itself.

I have never once in my life taken a picture of a redwood tree that I’m happy with because they are too tall and majestic to

Im going on vacation tomorrow and Zora is at my parents’ house.
I haven’t been gone overnight since our first emergency vet visit in early February so not having her here is really shaking me because the only time I’ve been away from her at night is when she’s been in the hospital.

I'm going on vacation for a week and I've decided to adopt a new strategy for packing.
Usually I make a list and then supposedly start packing a few days ahead of time, adding a few things per day and being stressed the entire time and then finishing it all the night before.
This time, I'm going to try waiting till the night before to even start and see if it's more or less stress than my usual way.

I am not done with my other knitting project but I'm going on vacation and want to bring a new one for space saving reasons..I'll put the yarn I have in the first comment
I'm debating these two cardigans. The one in green is more difficult to make with the cables and buttons and is more fitted/tailored so will be fiddly and I may have to restart a few times but I like it. The other one is easier but also more shapeless (although I suppose I don't have to make it as baggy).

I had a mammogram today. I told the tech that last year, I had to go back for a follow up “diagnostic mammogram” because the results were unclear and that I had to pay $500 for the second one because my insurance is terrible.
She said, “that’s terrible. Watch out I’m going to put way more pressure so that doesn’t happen again,” and cranked the machine up more.
I got the results two hours later and I don’t have breast cancer and I don’t have to go back for an extra!

If you’ve known me on here for a bit, you know I’m in my San Francisco phase… I live in the east bay but was born in the city (6th gen but raised in the north bay) and am rediscovering it.
For the summer, I’m going to take some full days and explore including ocean Beach Park, McLaren, Glen Canyon Park again, etc.

I am not a construction project manager so can someone explain this to me?
They’re doing a major major project on the long street I live on to make it safer, put in bike lanes, etc. I’m totally in favor.
But.
They’re working 1-2 days a week. That’s it.

I literally can’t remember what I did yesterday but I can remember that in 1982, when I was in second grade, my neighbor Alison Pickle (who I was told to be nice to because her mom was blind) stole my unicorn head oil sticker and put it in HER sticker collection. And I knew this for a fact because my unicorn head oil sticker had a scratch on it from when I had scratched it with a pencil to see what happened. And I wasn’t allowed to tell Alison’s mother because she was blind so we shouldn’t bother her.
But what did I have for breakfast today? No idea.
(Also, the “oil sticker” and attitude about disabilities really sets us firmly in the early 80s. Anyone else have oil stickers/know what I’m talking about?)

Today on the original 21 Jump Street there’s a disturbing episode about teenagers being committed to psych hospitals that are… not good places.
Johnny Depp goes undercover to one and sees the abuses and then gets transferred to “State Hospital” when they won’t believe that he’s a cop. State Hospital is a nightmare of a place that’s dark and grimy and understaffed. His coworkers finally find him in a cot, rigged up, having never been admitted but just warehoused.
This was 1988, so I’m assuming it was a commentary on the changes made under Reagan.
I also blame Reagan.

I am asking for advice…
have a tool box full of my brothers old stuff and I’m trying to figure out what I need to keep.
I am NOT handy (partly because my dad didn’t think girls could be so my brother is but my sister and I have lots of baggage around this)
I can use a hammer and screwdriver and have those. I can use an Allen wrench fine.
Of these things, what should I keep just in case and what am I never goinf to need if I don’t tend to do much besides tighten things with screwdrivers, hang pictures, and adjust my bike seat?
I’m thinking maybe the needle nose pliers and Vice could come in handy, not sure why. Maybe rhe adjustable wrench? I don’t even know what some of the things are!

The good thing about today:
One of my old students who's now in college came to visit. (more to visit baby possums than me, truthfully, but I got a really good hug) He's the one who came out to me as trans before any other adult and I just really like him so much as a person.
Brought a friend whose gender/pronouns I did not ask but who had a really beautiful name that I complimented and they said, "Thank you: I chose it."
Two 19-year-olds with fluorescent yellow and orange hair, tattoos everywhere, facial piercings galore, leather and studs...
Two of the nicest and kindest people you'll ever meet in your entire life.
They saw the pile of pride stickers I have and asked for some and I said, "Only if you promise to stick some of them places that make bigots angry" and they promised. Then they saw the pride pins and put a bunch on their jackets and backpacks.
I'm so lucky to know people like this.

But she COULDN'T because as soon as she got onto the sidewalk some boys from her school started bothering her.
“Why don’t you want to talk to us, come on, we just want to talk, what are you deaf, what's wrong with you"
So we spent most of tutoring time (she is also a student) talking about how to ignore men/boys and what to do if you feel threatened and how if she sees them here ever she can just come in and wait for them to go and

My oldest niece’s school took down their pride flag. Tomorrow I plan to buy a massive amount of pride stickers and mini flags for her and all her friends to give out.
If anyone has a good website that could get them here in the next week that isn’t Amazon, please let me know. Going to see if I can think of any physical stores nearby too.
Preference for the “progress” pride flag (I think that’s what it’s called?)

-Long COVID is terrifying
I don't wear a mask all the time in public by any means, but I wear it in crowds (today in the theater for sure), on public transit, and anywhere with terrible ventilation. I love my exercise classes and they're very small but there's *no* ventilation and I'm just the weirdo who wears a mask
I work with kids and used to get a cold every month or two. THIS IS BETTER.

Ok I dropped my walled outside the Powell street BART station (NOT GOOD)
And within five minutes before I even REALIZED, someone found it, called me, and walked it over to where I was waiting for my niece.
All the cash still in it. Wouldn’t take a reward.
My God was that lucky.

I guess he thought about it and decided to pay anyway and that was really nice.

OK, tell me what to do in this situation:
Student's parent texted me and canceled last minute because student had gotten hurt (they're ok). Parent acknowledged that they hadn't given me enough notice and they'd have to pay.
I said, as I usually do for the first time if it's an injury or illness, that I'd let this one go with the understanding that if there's a last minute cancellation again, I'll charge.
Parent thanked me and said they agreed and would pay next time.
Five hours later... parent paid!
Do I thank them? Remind them we talked about it and they don't have to? Ignore it and take the money?
(it wasn't just default; this parent never pays until I request and I didn't request so they made an effort to do it)

Today I worked with a third grader on multiplication. I told him that zero was an easy one to remember because it made all other numbers turn to zero. 4 x 0? Zero. A million times zero? Zero. I said, "Zero is a bully that way."
He said, "But in addition, zero never gets anywhere. It doesn't change a number at all. I think that's how it became evil; the wretched origin of zero." (yes, he really said that)
I said, "That sounds like a great story to write.
His eyes LIT UP and he said, "Please can I write that story?" When I agreed, he said "THIS is why I LOVE going to Bronwyn!"
The story is barely started but includes the lines:
“Zilch had a wretched soul because nobody wants to be zilch”
(That was because it doesn’t change the number in addition)
"But one day he discovered ’times’ and what it can do” (change all the other numbers to zero)
And then zilch laughs an evil laugh.

I used a gender-neutral bathroom in San Francisco this weekend.
There were people of various genders, all the in the same bathroom.
That's it; there's nothing more to the story because nothing happened and it was just a regular bathroom trip and not scary.

As I am passing out the red cards for people to know their rights against ICE, a trans friend asked if I knew of anyone making similar cards for trans and gender non conforming people to know their rights.
I don’t; does anyone else?
