I probably will do this to motorola-vicky instead, because it has a completely plastic chassis (so I can 3D-print new casing) and I can steal I2C lines and power needed for keyboard controller relatively easily.
Biggest challenge would be:
1. Inability to afford a 3D printer
2. Figuring out how keyboard mechanisms worked in HTC TyTn II for example and replicating it

I thought it was obvious? Anyone who ever looked at iOS or Android logs knows that every single notification you ever received is stored in the logs, and are transferred to new devices if you use migration assistant or encrypted backup.
It's a valid and big attack vector, that's why I personally have notifications enabled to just tell me which app it is and why i'm getting a notification, no other context. Especially since push notifications are handled by Google/Apple's servers so if you can MITM it, you can collect a lot of sensitive data.

Power button on this phone feels pretty nice :akko_giggle:
I got annoyed because buttons on this phone have terrible quality and don't register presses when case is off.
While poking the board with oscilloscope to find UART I found a testpad that was shorting to ground when I pressed the power button, so here we go.
Also found that shorting two pins around the battery connector makes phone boot with only USB attached (both testpads had same voltage with battery connected and USB cable plugged in) so I can attach a MCU to toggle power on/off and turn phone on/off by setting pins high or low, I should have some octocouplers in parts drawer.
Sadly still no UART, I *really* don't want to deploy a Windows VM just to use some Chinese software to get schematics for this but it should be much easier to find it now.
Someone sent me memory dump from that software and it looks like it opens a tunnel to China (geoblock), authenticates over HTTP with cookie and downloads PDFs from "http://down.dzkj16888.com/down/51/pdf/$VENDOR/$MODEL/$FILE.pdf". I probably could pwn it and archive all pdfs they host on that server but I don't have enough spoons :akko_tired:

It just... never crossed my mind? I know we could forward it to SMBus (which is just fancy I2C, that's how RAM SPD data is parsed and VPD EEPROMs on PCIe cards in servers) but somehow using iGPU I2C for this never crossed my mind

WAIT, this looks remarkably simple...
Since it's just an I2C bus, we could pinmux it in coreboot and write a driver to forward console output to it (similar to how it's done with LPSS) and grab it over DVI/HDMI/DP with something like a Pi Pico. It would make it possible to develop/debug boards without RS232 or even laptops without opening the chassis :neocat_hyper:

from what I remember, HDMI/DP won't enable I2C before HPD event (so you might have to spoof EDID and "tell" HDMI/DP that the display is connected first)

I think it's a bit more complicated with HDMI, but you can access i2c on GPUs just fine (it's used for DDC). I think I only tested this on Intel iGPUs so it's good to know it works on (at least older) AMD APUs as well.
In fact, Google did some cursed stuff in 2013 where they hooked up an input device (either touchscreen or touchpad, I don't remember) to iGPU's i2c bus (I think they did it in LINK)

It’s a surprisingly nice device. MediaTek G99 (same SoC as Zinwa Q25), 8GB LPDDR4x, 128GB UFS, 120Hz OLED and apparently a pretty nice Samsung sensor.
Didn’t expect that, it’s gonna be fun (especially since SoC is vulnerable to BootROM exploit, so we can replace LK with U-Boot

This, pinecil is better than what you get with cheap soldering stations these days. Pretty sure you can find pictures of me soldering stuff on the table/ground from FrOSCon using a powerbank to do so. You just can't go wrong with it, see an example of... soldering UART to @aelin 's phone in the cafeteria.
No microscope, nothing (sadly it had to be re-done at CCCAC because enamel coating got scratched and it started shorting-out, but I'm still pretty proud of that).
Recently got Miniware TS21 for more precise jobs, but that's something you'd need only if you're doing microsoldering on phones for example.

I wonder if you'll be able to get OsafuKeitai running on it. I wish I changed my device model before the trip last year, sadly I was too lazy and had device with locked bootloader/no root on me so I couldn't test.
(International models of Google Pixel can use OsafuKeitai just fine, there's a check in the app if device was sold on Japanese market. I literally just ran "sed" on devinfo partition which changes model ID to one corresponding to a Japanese model and it works. Downside is that I have global shutter sound in Android but I don't really care about it since it's not obnoxious

It’s real, IBM used it when I worked there (early 2020s). Still better than crowdstrike, which required specific kernel versions and slows workstations to a halt. I still remember when GDC got spit out into Kyndryl (absolute meme of a company) and within months of announcing partnership with Microslop banned usage of Linux on workstations. Then they gave me a top-spec 2019 16in MBP that used 100% od the CPU and lagged… during the Teams call with the client. It was the reason why I’ve quit that job.

I've heard about it from someone who was working for Qualcomm at 38C3 and *technically* nobody's forcing hardware vendors to fuse SoCs (same as deploying BootGuard/PSB on x86).
Sure, you *technically* break ROT since you can load your own firmware (bootloader etc), but also remoteproc fw (wifi, modem etc.) but the only real requirement for it is Google Play certification

I was annoyed that charging stand they give you is only compatible with region where you bought it (wish I knew it was just wireless charging when I was in Japan), but it was somehow compatible with two different charging stands (some supermarket special and philips at friend's places).

best part is that I haven't seen that sensor ANYWHERE in the firmware, and I was the one who upstreamed audio support for this laptop, fixed sleep issues and pen/rotation. When I got this laptop for my birthday in December 2022 it basically didn't work in Linux whatsoever.

Turns out that while there are indeed regressions in Qualcomm's DRM, they don't impact functionality (mostly just kernel oops about enabling/disabling clocks).
Problem was actually an... NFC interrupt. Setting it to `IRQ_TYPE_LEVEL_HIGH` causes boot hang, but works if it's set to `IRQ_TYPE_EDGE_FALLING` *(Thanks to @npub1nkn…l2d9 for pointing me to the patch)* :neocat_floof_explode:

I worked for a Japanese corporation (NTT) when I was there, they paid really well and my coworkers/managers were incredibly nice. Unfortunately getting gluten-free food was near impossible and ending up in the hospital every 2 weeks or so wasn't... ideal.
I really enjoyed living there, but unfortunately life is life :sadcat:
(If you like metal, there's a great bar behind the hospital ran by a guy named Marc if I remember correctly. Been there relatively often with my coworkers, can recommend :blobcatblep: )

I see motorola-vicky locally (same SoC) with cracked touchscreen for ~50EUR, so if someone can send it my way I'm happy to help. All schematics I've seen for that phone are paywalled but I have a meter/scope so I can hunt-down UART pins myself and devicetree will tell me the rest :akko_shrug:

@Remiberry bought a replacement board for Blackberry (Zinwa Q25) and nerdsniped me into mainline bringup (as it is tradition).
Looked at dumped DT, so far it looks like the SoC is quite similar to MT8183/MT8186 on Chromebooks so it shouldn't be too difficult to get working on mainline:
- MT6789/MT8781V (G99/G99 Pro) is basically the same SoC, 6x A55 and 2x A76 (MT8183/MT8186).
- MT6366/MT6358 PMIC (confusing strings, MT6366 would make it the same as MT8186 in Google/Corsola while MT6358 would make it the same as MT8183 in Google/Krane). Both supported in upstream.
- I/O block (i2c, spi etc) from MT6983 (Dimensity 9000).
- Weird touchscreen (i2c 0x11e00000 addr 0x67). DT says Synaptics S2716B, Kconfig says gigadevice, header says novatek, makefile says omnivision... and downstream kernel just ships pre-compiled object... what the hell?.
- Orient-Chip OCA72390WPAD audio amp at i2c 0x11015000 addr 0x58, ST21 NFC 0x08 on the same node.
- MT6375 charger at i2c 0x11017000 addr 0x34 plus wl2868c PMIC at addr 0x2f on the same node.

I always thought Poland was the worst bureaucracy-wise.
However, after living in 3 different European countries (out of which one of those countries isn't in EU anymore, RIP UK) I can confidently say that Germany got us beat in this regard :akko_giggle:
In my personal opinion experience, best to worst to deal with are:
1. England (pre-Brexit, no idea about now)
2. France (LaPoste offering letter templates for common stuff is amazing)
3. Poland (It did get better over the past decade as you can take care of most stuff online now and if you make an oopsie it's usually not a big deal but older employees in more rural areas and incompetence are still relatively common)
4. Germany (Feels Poland from early 2010s, pretty much nothing can be done online, if you make an oopsie you're screwed)

sadly @npub1uwv…9fzy had the same problem and had to ship their phone to get it fixed.
I don't know why Fairphone doesn't publish EDL loaders, Qualcomm definitely doesn't care (there are vendors such as Radxa or Lynx that ship their devices unfused *and* publish EDL loaders, as fusing is only required if you want to certify your device with google)

Kyoceras are nice because they're not nearly as locked-down as Fujitsu. I've got an F-03L and I wanted to hack it (Qualcomm 210 so I could put pmOS on it), but it looks like they removed everything - fastboot, recovery, even edl(...how?).
Opened it and tried to solder UART to it, but sadly ended up ripping pads off (even under the miscroscope!) because it was so freakin' tiny.
Unfortunately it has an NTT (Docomo) SIMLock (ironically enough I have a SoftBank SIM but can't use it in EU because foreigners apparently can't get roaming according to some laws I've read).
I wish I used 200% of my brain and brought it to Docomo branch when I was in Japan to remove the simlock. It worked with an iPhone (so I got it 40% cheaper than usual) so...
I love keitais though. They even support stuff like Osafu-Keitai so you can use them for public transport (if you live in Japan...) or payments, they fit in your pocket, have physical keyboards and last forever on a single charge. Absolutely peak phone design.

to be fair, it's hard to feel accomplishment when you do something, publish it and instantly get people complaining that it doesn't work (because they don't understand what they're doing) or reporting minor bugs/annoyances that will take you time and effort to fix instead of *them* offering to work on those little annoyances

this just... works in Plasma Mobile on my phone?
There's a toggle in display settings if I want to use ALS to adjust brightness automatically... and it works the same as on Android (poorly because Xiaomi didn't calibrate the sensor correctly, but it does).
I guess you'd need to check how it's connected and if there are drivers in mainline for that particular sensor in your laptop

yes, but pushing spyware, online accounts/ads started in Win 10. I remember when people found that beta builds of Windows 10 were taking periodic screenshots of your desktop and uploading them to microsoft's servers, at some point it even had a keylogger that sent your keyboard inputs as well.
Somehow... people completely forgot that happened and attributed it to beta builds but it still wasn't okay

oh yeah, eGPUs are a total mess...
Two years ago my company organized a hackathon somewhere in rural Germany, I brought some Chromebooks and my desktop, coworker brought his laptop and RTX2080 (I think?) in eGPU enclosure.
eGPU setup basically... didn't work. It behaved much better with RX7800XT we yoinked from my workstation, but still wasn't super stable either way.
I ended up letting him swap the SSD into my desktop and use it for few days, after which he sold nvidia card and eGPU enclosure. He bought used Ryzen system with the same GPU I have (I think) for pretty much the same amount of money he got from selling that setup.
That's why it might be a hot take but eGPUs are inherently stupid. Setup costs the same as used parts and you give up A LOT of performance due to bus constrains (it's like what, 32Gb/s on TB4?).
I'm pretty hyped for dual-oculink board for my work laptop (Framework 16) that someone's been working on.
You have direct PCIe 4.0 x8 exposed on the back of the laptop that you can do whatever you want with.
Plus, because AMD doesn't have the whole IFD nonsense, you can split those lanes however you want (at least according to my findings while reverse-engineering this stuff so far), so you can literally have 8x PCIe 4.0 x1 slots hanging off of your laptop if you really want.
This effectively means that once I'm done with porting coreboot to that system, you'll have a toggle that will allow you to split that PCIe port into:
- 1x 8-lanes
- 2x 4-lanes
- 4x 2-lanes
- 8x 1-lane
- Maybe something custom, like 2x2 for two additional (internal) NVME SSDs, and external OcuLink with 4-lanes of PCIe (40Gb/s)?
That would be really neat in my opinion, and board costs basically pennies (~40EUR) in comparison to licensed TB4 implementation (I don't even want to think how much TB5 will cost due to signal integrity etc)

I really can't wait until gpu resetting on Linux will become a thing...
Many motherboards (especially reference boards from silicon vendors or laptops) allow you to enable/disable power to the slot by controlling the GPIO (SoC pincontrol).
You can spot this by looking for "rtd" in src/mainboard/* directory in coreboot tree, there are pins specified for PCIe power and reset.
Imagine being able to cut the power to something like a dedicated GPU in your system by setting PCIE_PWR pin low and decreasing your desktop power's consumption by ~30W (or even ~80W if you happen to use first-generation Intel Arc GPU).
Then when you want to play a game, you would set the pin high, DRM would re-initialize the card, and you could either play as-is (displays connected to iGPU would cost you *some* performance due to DMA framebuffer copy) or press the button on (very inexpensive these days) DP/HDMI switch and play with full performance straight from dGPU.
Of course none of that would be required *if* board vendor would implement ASPM correctly, but vast majority of board vendors fuck up their power management/board designs, so that would be nice to have.
(One day I will go insane enough to design an open-source ATX board that would implement everything correctly and use STM32 as an Embedded Controller)

- Authorizing operations on government websites (requires scanning your ID with NFC and punching in the code)
- Contactless payments (local banks offer NFC payments without depending on GSF)

actually kinda wondering, how does that work with libc rootfs/musl host?
I did extremely cursed sh^H^H stuff with stealing /usr/lib and /usr/lib64 from fedora, placing it in /usr/local/lib and /usr/local/lib64 and using patchelf on software compiled for libc.

probably would run, I revised my instructions for doing this in Docker on pmOS wiki. Building FEX on xiaomi-pyxis didn't take that long and SoC didn't even get to 70*C :blobcat3c:
If you edit devicetree to enable dual-role and mode-switch on usb node, it shooooould work in host mode if you use powered USB hub and do manual modeswitch.

I didn't, so I had a look. This doesn't look like what I described, I hacked up Celeste to run on ARM64 that you can launch with a script back in 2023 and I bet it would still launch just fine today. There's a tarball of that somewhere on my friend's server.
Idea is to have a repo for other architectures so that less-powerful devices don't have to go trough layers of translation to run the game

I wonder if there would be interest/if we should maintain community patches for indie games on Linux.
There are plenty of games that can run just fine natively on ARM64 with some library/binary hacking (especially ones using fmod), just to name some that I own:
- Celeste
- Little Goody Two Shoes
- Z.A.T.O
Not sure how it would be packaging-wise, maybe something like Quake 3? (Where packages provide engine and user has to supply licensed content) :akko_thonk:
