@nprofile…p7lw In the case of encrypted message with unencrypted content it is quite literally impossible for homeservers to enforce anything without breaking encryption (which should be client-side anyway) or leaking more metadata. And no, I never suggested that other clients are not trustworthy (in fact spec compliance is the norm), and I am not arguing on T&S (in fact I fully agree with your point), but since you conceded I will not argue with you further.

@nprofile…p7lw On one hand there is nothing preventing any user sending unencrypted anything (or encrypted message with unencrypted attachment like how Element handles forwards or thumbnail bots) into an encrypted room because it's not the homeserver's job to enforce it; on the other hand you're trying to present an edge case, that you do not know how to reproduce, as standard behaviour, per your blog post. So it is on you to prove it one way or the other, with all due respect.

@nprofile…p7lw You'll have to show the evidence, because if I view source on an encrypted message and try to construct the download link from the MXC URI then it does give me an encrypted copy of the attachment.

@nprofile…p7lw Major correction for Matrix: if you upload attachments into an encrypted room then the attachment is encrypted. If you forward an attachment from an unencrypted room to an encrypted one then it depends on client behaviour (Element only encrypts the message and reuse the unencrypted attachment, while some other clients will encrypt and reupload the attachment). URL previews are requested by clients on the fly; only the URL is sent to the server and it is not linked to messages.

Sorry for the recent inactivity (to the point that someone on Matrix thought I disappeared, showing how chronically online I was...), I'm now juggling between professional stuff (coursework and an on-campus dev job - busy but good) and insomnia (very bad), so am too eepy for the interwebz, but regardless I do still exist, so there's that. (I do hope someone could tell me how to fall asleep or get an internship...)

To my surprise one of my acquaintances (an undergrad student, even) offered me a #referral for #Meta, out of all companies... Says to collect 20 resumes for the recruiter... Last meetup in #Montreal (with two friends) before leaving for NYC again. Tried vegan #food, complained about school (a little bit), verified each others' Signal & Matrix accounts, collaboratively wrote postcards for a few friends back in NYC, so on so forth. Regrettably a bit rushed - got awkward because of scheduling issues - but it was still worth it.

@nprofile…ptqp Yeah, I've been there a decade ago (and even helped an old lady recharge her IC card - as a tourist!), it's complex but well-organized and reliable. Thru service between urban and suburban lines is especially an interesting concept. Though, I'd argue that the New York City Subway is more complicated, with planned and spontaneous reroutes, suspensions, skipped stations, local-to-express, express-to-local, plus reduced weekend frequency... So yes, there is a higher hill to climb out there.

Automated tooling has now been installed on #MstdnParty and #MstdnPlus to address reports of #spam from and to the instances.
For other #MastoAdmin's: all accounts use gmail addresses. One IP is 89.163.206.181 (German VPS) and the other is 122.165.217.244 (Indian fixed-line); it's unclear what pattern there is to actually prevent this attack.

As some of you might've known already, I'm now finally living alone (not financially) for a few weeks already. Unfortunately the supposed freedom gave way to that master's degree I'm pursuing... Anyways, now I #cook for myself - doubling as a mood adjustment exercise - so here are the two #noodles I've cooked (since I'm a sucker for noodles): a failed (but still tasting good) attempt at making Zha Jiang Mian, as well as some generic #pasta with bell peppers.

With regards to the utoots.com #scraper, the current information is as follows:
1. The scraper depends on a Mastodon instance flashist[.]video; it is recommended to block the instance. flashist[.]me and flashist[.]health is also operated by the same person.
2. I wrote a GitHub issue about it, however the person has chosen to take down the entire repository instead. The issue is archived at https://archive.ph/8ynKh .
