I find that it's internalized by people I help, reccurently apologizing for being "bad with computer".
Come on. Nobody is born with that bullshit. Nobody should - most of it would be unecessary if software&hardware were fixed indeed, and while giving hacks to get through, we should apologize at the one we help - and curse at the material we're dealing with.

If they want to avoid mainsteam but still fairly good instance, mine is fine : admins are reliable without shady undertones that I know of yet those past few years, which is the best recommendation I can think of (https://pouet.chapril.org).
For the "contact someone who is followed to quickstart you", one easy way is to search people using the "🇵🇸" as handle ; and mention a few dozen of them in PM.
Pretty sure you'll get some to follow and then to reboost, giving you the boost.

I'd say it doesn't matter. Ideally you'd want to pick an instance on the smaller side reflecting part of your ideals but it's far from being a condition. Worst case scenario your instance may be lax on moderation or close your instance one day.
Your first post doesn't matter either, it's no big deal. But if you don't want to be alone in the desert for the first few thousand of post, find someone with 1-2 thousand follower to quickstart your visibility (just get in touch).

I even see it coming from people. We casually do "computer repair cafe" where people can ask about their issues. More than 4-5 times I've got to see someone asking chatGPT *while* asking us.
One helper even promote some AI platform instead of "searching the web" because "it's so smart, they can answer to everything, no need to be an expert anymore !".
It was already sad enough coming from companies. People doing propaganda for free is one step more of despair.
