Eric's talk was peppered with great quotations and references to influences.
I've experienced burnout and one of the quotes that particularly struck home with me was from Dr. Amelia Nagoski, co-author of Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle:
"This is a larger systemic issue that has to be addressed, which is why the cure for burnout is not self care — can never be self care. The cure for burnout has to be all of us caring for each other."

Eric Bailey @npub18vj…g4zy closed out the day with a powerful talk that combined personal narrative, systemic warnings, and thoughtful analysis with expressions of community care and hope.
An interesting companion piece to Hitomi Yokata's talk this morning. Drawing on the discourse of harm reduction, he adapted the principles to trauma-informed design.
Going to be thinking about this one for a long time.

Sad news: the WebAIM mailing list is shutting down on August 27.
The archives will remain available.
Since 1999, the WebAIM @npub13c4…926g email list has distributed discussions on web accessibility and provided a virtual community for a diverse range of members. I've been subscribed since 2002, and I learned more about accessibility from the list and its members than from any other single source on the web.
End of an era.

I'm in favour of public school policies being shaped by local community concerns in conversation with professional educators and health and safety professionals. But I can't imagine how a provincial-wide policy that restricts access to some basic education literature actually meets the needs of the "community" of Alberta at large.

As of October 1st, school libraries in Alberta must remove books with sexually explicit content from their shelves. Among other things, Toronto Star reports that the new rules mean "Students in Grade 9 and younger will not be allowed to read about puberty, menstruation and breastfeeding."
Puberty? Menstruation? Breastfeeding?
Some kids in grade 9 are already in puberty and already menstruating. Most were breastfed.
