I don't know. This was in San Fransisco (???) Canyon, so pretty shielded from the wind. IIRC the tree was also pretty rotten / dead standing with bark still on it. I just didn't notice.

I did not end up in anywhere near the personal danger you almost were in, but a similar thing happened to me in the summer outside of Boulder CO ~25 years ago. Stuck my hand out to lean against a similar size tree and it didn't even offer any resistance: it just went. I was at the back of a large group of people and, very luckily, it fell away from them. Several of them turned around at the initial crack to see the tree falling with myself, arms windmilling, going with it. 😬

While @npub19xy…lkfq has a really great EQ writeup, I thought I'd add more context for New England, specifically:
This is a newspaper piece I wrote about an EQ here in Western Massachusetts 3 years ago. The mechanisms / geological context for earthquakes in New England are pretty much all the same, and what I wrote there applies for York, ME as well:

Signal ID time:
This is a repetitive signal on 144.390 MHz, within the beacon sub-band. Is this a packet beacon? It's definitely digital or some sort of interference. If it's packet, how to I decode it?
Search engines aren't giving me answers.

Was passing through my old neighborhood today and popped by a spot along the banks of one of my favorite small rivers in the area. And, as always this time of year, it was a bonanza of edible mushrooms. Chicken of the woods, cinnabar chanterelle, and regular chanterelle. I really miss living in that neighberhood and town, but got priced out. But at least I got dinner tonight. #fungi

I love how Mastodon told me about aircraft tracking websites such that when a Cessna flew overhead I checked it out on a website and found out all sorts of info. about it, but mostly its very interesting flight path out from the Boston area to my part of the state for sunset: clear sightseeing or taking photos during the golden hour given the gorgeous day here.

Yeah a lot of us here in New England in VT adjacent states are rolling our eyes at all the rich people moving here with the Caucasity to call themselves climate refugees and making housing unattainable for us lower class folks who work here. We’ve now known for almost 20 years that flooding here is going to get worse. And it has. And we’re starting to have more forest fires here too. And their moving here makes the politics here more conservative and these things worse.
