i've definitely noticed that pinyin characters don't map clearly to a sound, since they merge different sounds that are only used in different contexts into one letter. i'd guess they were trying to remove extraneous information that's inherent in mandarin phonology from the script.
one of the more interesting cases of this is that there is a distinction between "nu" with an unrounded vowel and "nü" with a rounded vowel. but there is no "ju"/"jü" distinction, so the rounded vowel is written as "ju".

for context, there is [a flag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POW/MIA_flag ) in the united states put at a lot of monuments, government sites, post offices, highway rest stops, and other government-funded buildings commemorating prisoners of war secretly kept in vietnam after the us conceded defeat in the vietnam war.
slight problem: there have been multiple investigations and there has never been any evidence that vietnam was keeping prisoners of war after that time. this is just an 1970s conspiracy theory.

whenever i read an isekai story i think about how a lot of things probably couldn't be made even with knowledge due to precision requirements. i have no idea how one would, for example, manage to create doped silicon with technology that is stuck 1000 years ago where no one would understand what a "periodic table" is.

I'd say the biggest changes in computing in the past 25 years have more to do with centralization of information and communication around a small number of internet monopolies than to do with how computers function and the software that can run on them. We had Windows NT, Linux, and web browsers with JavaScript in 2000.

IANA has made a [specific policy](https://www.iana.org/help/cctld-retirement ) about this because they don't want a repeat of .su or .yu. Most TLDs for countries removed from ISO3166 have been deleted from the root zone, e.g. .tp, .yu, .zr, and .an.
Under the policy retirement would take up to 5 years after ISO 3166/MA takes action, or 10 years if the registrar requests an extension.

oh, oops, VoLTE is "Voice over LTE". LTE (4G) only supports data, so for years calls still went over a 3G network. VoLTE adds the ability to do calls and SMS over LTE by doing the same voice over IP stuff you'd use inside a company with Ethernet desk phones, but with added mobile network complexity

from what i can tell the acronyms are:<li>IMS: IP Multimedia Subsystem, the standard part of a mobile network for doing calls/SMS over IP</li><li>CSCF: Call Session Control Function, the server providing the first point of entry for a phone trying to make calls and such over VoLTE</li><li>UE: User Equipment, like your phone or laptop with model</li><li>IP: Internet Protocol, same protocol as everyone else uses</li><li>PCO: Protocol Configuration Option, settings sent by the mobile network in earlier provisioning stages</li><li>EPS: Evolved Packet System, the part of a mobile network for providing IP connectivity</li><li>DHCP: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, the same protocol you'd use to get an IP address on a local network. I think this refers to both DHCPv4 and DHCPv6</li><li>UICC: Universal Integrated Circuit Card, SIM card supporting multiple standards, what we've all been secretly using since 3g</li><li>IKE: Internet Key Exchange, the protocol used to initiate IPSec VPNs. I'm guessing this is for VoWifi</li><li>ePDG: Evolved PAcket Data Gateway, System for connecting to a mobile network's services over the general internet.</li><li><a href="https://www.3gpp.org" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">3GPP</a>: 3rd Generation Partnership Project, organization that's been setting mobile standards since 1998 including basically all the ones you care about like GSM, UMTS, LTE, and 5G.</li>

i saw a video about 3g shutdown in australia and wanted to see how phones actually figured out where to send their messages for VoLTE.
I found a page that helpfully told me that all IMS messages are sent through the CSCF, and that a UE can discover the IP address of a CSCF in one a few ways such as:<li>A PCO option in Activate default EPS bearer context request</li><li>DHCP</li><li>configuration files hardcoded in the UE</li><li>Hardcoding in UICC</li><li>IKE over ePDG</li>
