Alle der Städte der Welt mit Pfeilen, die anzeigen, wie hoch sie über dem Meeresspiegel liegen.
Sehr spannend die Verteilung in #China, oder #Vietnam oder südlich des #Himalaja.

Ich probiere hier weiter, welche Visualisierungen am besten geeignet sind. Die #Weltkarte ist nämlich klar am schönsten, aber da sah es zum Beispiel so aus, als hätten Städte in den USA deutlich die meiste bebaute Fläche pro Einwohner. Dabei liegen die beiden Rekordhalter in Japan.
Sowas sieht man viel besser in einem klassischen Diagramm:

So, der Kleine will keinen Mittagsschlaf mehr machen. Die Session fällt also aus 😅
Ich hab aber inzwischen von den Autor*innen erfahren, dass die Kartierungsmethode geändert wurde, weswegen vor allem in Indien und Äthipien jetzt deutlich mehr Menschen in Städten verortet werden, die weniger als 50.000 Einwohner haben. Das hat insgesamt die Zahl der "urban centre" merklich gesenkt (von etwa 13k auf etwa 11k).

Doch noch was: Im Einzugsgebiet des #Ganges/#Brahmaputra leben übrigens 362 Millionen Menschen in insgesamt fast 1200 Städten mit jeweils mindestens 50.000 Einwohnern. 🤯
Beide Zahlen sind mehr als doppelt so groß wie bei der Nr. 2 (dem #Jangtse) und sogar jeweils dreimal so groß wie bei Nr. 3 und 4 (#Indus und #Nil) 🤯🤯🤯

Ich hab übrigens ein Feld entdeckt, das alle Namen der Städte enthält, die zu einer "Stadt" (aka "urban centre") zusammengefasst wurden. Essen kann also als Erklärung "Essen; Duisburg; Bochum; Gelsenkirchen; Oberhausen; Mülheim an der Ruhr; Herne; Bottrop; Recklinghausen; Moers" bekommen, bei Bonn steht da aber auch nur "Bonn" 😕
Für heute ist's genug, aber vielleicht hat jemand eine Idee, wie eine Tabelle aufgebaut sein müsste müsste, damit @npub1463…zvng so ein Diagramm auswirft? 👇🏼

Weiter geht's. Ich hab ein bisschen mit @npub1463…zvng rumprobiert, ehrlich gesagt sind es wohl ein bisschen zu lange Tabellen. Das dauert alls ganz schön.
Was z.B. schonmal ganz gut aussieht: Eine Karte aller Städte nach bebauter Fläche (Größe der Quadrate) und nach bebauter Fläche pro Einwohner (Farbe). Das Ergebnis ist eher wenig überraschend, aber auffallend war schon, wie weit die US-Städte bei zweiterem vor dem Rest liegen. Es folgt übrigens Japan..

😒 Dann jetzt doch einmal die Definition hier 👇🏼
Ein "urban centre" (also "Stadt" oder hier eher Großstadt) ist in der #UCDB
Ein Gebiet aus zusammenhängenden Rasterzellen à 1 km², die alle eine Bevölkerungsdichte von mindestens 1500 Ew/km² haben und insgesamt mindestens 50.000 Einwohner.
Es geht um die Vergleichbarkeit städtischer Siedlungen in aller Welt, unabhängig von den oft arbiträren administrativen Grenzen.

Seit ein paar Wochen gibt's nun die aktuelle Version, die Urban Centre Database 2025:

Die will ich jetzt visualisieren und nach interessanten Einblicken suchen. Direkt aufgefallen, es sind nur noch etwa 11.000. Warum?
Erstes Hindernis: Zu den Städten gibt's nicht mehr direkt in der Excel-Tabelle die Koordinaten, sondern nur gesondert. Dank der Autor*innen + #Mastodon konnte ich die aber finden/umwandeln:

Also, Interesse ist da 😊 Dann etwas Hintergrund:
Vor ein paar Jahren habe ich die Urban Centre Database (#UCDB) entdeckt, dafür werden auf Basis von Erdbeobachtungen konsistente Daten zu Städten gesammelt. D.h. es ist egal, ob sich etwas Stadt nennt (oder nicht), relevant ist nur, leben in einem urbanen Raum dicht genug mindestens 50.000 Menschen. Wenn ja, dann ist das ein "urban centre".
Davon gab's vor 5 Jahren über 13.000.

To put this in perspective:
If we add #traffic from @npub163h…mv0n, #Bluesky, @npub13fk…z5hw & #Threads it brings more or less as much as #Facebook (and with fewer ups and downs). Which is not little. But that's mainly thanks to #Flipboard, as you can see.

I have now found 1070 verified accounts from media organizations in the #Fediverse, but only on #Mastodon, #Flipboard, #Threads, #Bluesky, #Ghost and #Peertube.
Just one is on #Sharkey (👋🏻 @npub178q…tt6v) and none on #Pixelfed, #Lemmy, #Piefed, #Misskey & Co. Are there really none there, or did I miss some?

Nach Pfingsten ein paar Statistiken zu unserer #Peertube-Instanz:
Der Account [@ct_3003](https://peertube.heise.de/video-channels/ct_3003 ) und der für die Uploads haben zusammen schon über 2200 Follower, die beiden Videos wurden 3000 Mal angesehen.
Insgesamt gab es sogar 4400 eindeutige Zuschauer*innen, die summierte Betrachtungszeit lag bei fast 400 Stunden.
Alles ziemlich toll, vor allem natürlich, wenn man das pro Follower sieht. Aber bis zu den Werten des Kanals auf #YouTube ist es noch ein wenig, also schön fleißig weiterempfehlen!

As far as I know, @npub14kg…4yra is now the (EDIT:) third media organization with it's own instance on #Peertube to share #videos directly in the #Fediverse.

👆🏼 Laut dem jüngsten Update der #ESA wurde die abstürzende Venussonde zuletzt um kurz nach 8 Uhr MESZ von Radarsystemen über Deutschland beobachtet. Womöglich ist sie inzwischen abgestürzt. Noch gibt es aber keine weiteren Informationen über ihren Verbleib.

I did it! Although it's still very rough & really not pretty, I got my spreadsheet with (> 900) verified accounts of media organizations in the #Fediverse away from #Google. The solution was #DataTables all along 👇🏼

I have now started two projects, to collect verified accounts by the media that are bridged via #BridgyFed and media in the #Fediverse but not on #Mastodon, @Threads or #Flipboard.
But with both, I need help: Please, if you know of accounts, that fit in both categories then send me a handle.

Oh, and keep in mind: Between the fall of 2023 and the fall of 2024 the UTM-parameter didn't work correctly on #Mastodon, and we missed some traffic from there. But that doesn't explain the big bump at the end of 2024. I can only guess, what's that about.

Interestingly, there is a similar phenomenon on #Bluesky because they don't send a referrer on mobile. If I extrapolate the rate of visits from other posts on PC, I get a rate of 20% of "extra traffic". I added that to the graph, too. ☝🏼

I made a new graph to illustrate that. The total traffic (here "≈ Mastodon") is a bit fuzzy, to make clear, that that that can only be an estimate (maybe people are sharing more on mastodon.social than elsewhere, for example).

But, for some weeks now, mastodon.social is sending a referrer (thx @gargron). That's why I can compare traffic coming from there via our links and traffic coming from there without our parameter. And that's how I know that we get roughly 40% more visits from #Mastodon than we "see".

As you know by now, I am tracking traffic coming via our posts from @npub14kg…4yra (and the other accounts) with the help of an UTM-parameter added to our shared URLs. I don't know, how much traffic is coming via URLs, that others are sharing (because they lack the parameter).

Here is another interesting insight: I'm now able to estimate, that #traffic from #Mastodon to @npub14kg…4yra could be roughly 40% bigger, than we are "seeing". This would confirm, that since the middle of 2023 we got as many visits from here, as from #Twitter.

If you look at the distribution of the traffic, the Top20 of the articles take a different chunk. So, for example, from #X the biggest article brought half of the traffic, from #Mastodon the whole Top20 brings about 20 %.

After some German unions yesterday, more than 60 (!!) German universities left #X/#Twitter today. Some are already active on #Mastodon. They justified this with their commitment to fact-based communication and against antidemocratic forces. Values that promote diversity, freedom and science aren't present over there, they say. 👏🏻

If I add the #traffic from #Mastodon & #Flipboard & #Bluesky into #Fediverse (I know, I know... but they're federated or bridged), they're now comparable to #Facebook. 😯
Will be interesting to see that graph, when #Threads federates here and (!!) allows automated posts.

2024 is ending, time for a last look at the #traffic to @npub14kg…4yra via X/ #Twitter and its alternatives.
#Mastodon was very stable, which made it the biggest source by the end of the year. #Bluesky grew significantly at the end and is now clearly in second place. #X fell the whole year, and our departure (from posting there) just accelerated that. But #Threads (where we can't post automatically) is still far behind.

Is Mastodon abandoning the policy on noreferrer?
Remember the discussion here on #Mastodon about forcing a NoReferrer on all links from some days ago?
Today I suddenly found mastodon.social as traffic source and would you look at that: The same link over there hasn't got the NoReferrer but on our own instance it still has it.
Did I miss something? Is this deliberate?

Where are they going, you ask? To #Bluesky. #Mastodon is rarely ever mentioned.
Why is that? What do you think?

If you add all the #TwitterAlternative s, they have been in the lead for a while now.
If you add @npub13fk…z5hw and sum it up wit #Mastodon (because #Fediverse 😉), then #Facebook ist not far.
But, if you have a look on the numbers since the beginning of 2022, then it's clear, that this is mainly a story about the decline of #Twitter.

Wenn man die #TwitterAlternative n addiert, dann sind sie schon länger klar vorn (s. unten).
Nimmt man noch #Flipboard dazu und addiert das mit #Mastodon (weil #Fediverse 😉), dann kommt gar #Facebook in Reichweite.
Guckt man mal die Zahlen seit Anfang 2022 an, dann sieht man, dass es aber trotzdem v.a. eine Geschichte des Niedergangs von #Twitter ist.
