Since I'm upgrading my laptop from 14" to 16", it's triggered an interesting chain reaction. The 16" doesn't fit the current backpack, so it needs to be upgraded.
I haven't told my wife that it might not fit the #motorcycle either.

But! The weather was fantastic, and the route was stunning. I really enjoyed the first 17km, at least. Still, I’m very proud of my achievement. The goal was to finish it in under 2 hours, and I came very close.

Ran my first half-marathon yesterday: 2:03:33.
The first 17km felt controlled. Power on target, everything according to plan. Then km 18 happened, and the plan left the chat.
Lost 75 seconds per km over the final 4km. The post-race data analysis was clear: turns out I was running on half the fuel I needed (49g carbs/hour instead of 80+) while holding a power target (303W of CP 325W) that was too ambitious for the duration.
Lessons were learned here.

Ran my first half-marathon this morning. Feeling very grateful. The training through winter, despite rain, cold, and snow, is really paying off. At this point, the mid-March race feels like a victory lap.

I ran my first half-marathon today, or so I thought. The official distance is 21,0975km. I stopped at 21km.
Felt pretty salty about that, but a significant milestone nonetheless.

Was greeted this morning by monitoring notifying me of crashing web containers throughout the night.
Root cause: distributed /media_proxy flood where clients request the entire srcset attribute as a URL (%20 + ,%20https:/.../small%20...w). At peak: 23,298 unique IPs per 5 min + lots of 499/503.
Mitigated via CrowdSec trigger on Traefik logs (path-based): https://github.com/toot-community/platform/commit/183ddfff3b70c8bf4b168cda52f84e6e3bf942de
This detection logic should apply to any WAF, though.

I've been feeding my DSW schedule and some life notes about sleep, schedule, stress, etc. into ChatGPT for a couple of weeks now. It's been working great for me, as it provides the necessary context and can suggest deviations from the plan when needed.
I showed it some runs and data, and it detected accumulated fatigue, indicated by a higher-than-usual HR at the same pace. It probably saved me from getting injured.

I spent a few days sick and noticed a flaw in the Daily Suggested Workouts algorithm by #Garmin:
When you're under the weather, but your HRV and sleep are still good, the algorithm continues to recommend intense workouts.
This can worsen your condition since each hard workout can temporarily weaken your immune system, pushing you further away from recovery.
A reminder to always use common sense and listen to your body.

Debating a challenge to start the new year: going the first 30 days without a smartphone, in an effort to reset my unhealthy patterns with my phone.
The rules: a dumbphone for calling and perhaps a once-a-day sync with Garmin for running metrics.
I can think of some impractical consequences (WhatsApp, for instance), and I need to give it some thought about whether they're really necessary or if I should set up an alternative.

Another interesting adventure from the life of a #MastoAdmin: "Where do all these requests come from?"
These spikes come and go on a fairly steady rhythm (each ~60 minutes). I found this to be interesting, so I investigated which URLs are being requested the most during these spikes.
Turns out: It's the emojis. I don't mind as they're being returned early by Varnish, but why so much? 2.5 million times per 24 hours seems like _a lot_.

Started watching "Keuringsdienst van Waarde", a Dutch show on NPO. I learnt that in Canada, for Merino wool, they:
a) Cut off the skin on the sheep's behind, to prevent them from being eaten alive by flies because their feces will get stuck in the wool.. It's called Mulesing.
And b) It's our own fault because we're breeding them with lots and lots of skin flaps (more wool per sheep!), causing these unsanitary conditions in the first place.
Money really corrupts.

Doing a fairly large print today. It's a fruit washer, as per the wife's request. It'll take nearly 21 hours to complete, as it'll be switching between PLA/PETG throughout the print for easier support removal later on.

The cluster just updated Mastodon to the latest v4.4.8 by itself with new security patches.
The update installed automatically without any downtime.
After dealing with all the moving parts and the complexity involved, I have to say, DevOps is pretty cool.

It's been my #NewYearsResolution to quit drinking caffeinated coffee and alcohol for the entire year. We've been well into the fifth month of this year, and I'm holding strong.
I had my fair share of cravings, but I'm really enjoying being energized and clearheaded all the time. My sleep quality has increased tenfold, and I no longer need to sit in quiet existence for an hour each morning before becoming a pleasant human being.
