This nursing home is part of a large chain, owned by investment bankers who could care less. They have scraped every last quarter, dime and nickel. And the oversight is practically nonexistent. It is truly appalling.

2025-11-14 01:52:56 UTC

👉👉👉 Another absolutely disgusting dinner here at the nursing home...
*Supposedly* it's lasagne. And that is a heap of very distressed lettuce to the side - old, limp, browning. No salad dressing either. Just UGH.

🐸🧶🐸 Lookity look, the frog is ON!!
Thanks to #FinishOrFrogAlong, I was finally able to let go of this project that just wasn't calling to me anymore.
Nordic roots (Estonian, Germanic) -a culture of no waste and finishing what you start - can be helpful, but not always. This shawl had become a torment. Fun to plan, not fun to knit.
It's OK to frog. It's healthy to frog!

Picked out 2 skeins so far. Ideas explored all playing off this quasi-autumnal cream speckled yarn from HedgeHog. Maybe add this darkish gray, a gold or golden brown, a deep blue, or maybe a deep berry brown? Pop a mohair somewhere? It was hard to see in artificial light, and I'm not sure about the aqua tones on that speckled one.

Here is said #MKAL shawl by Romi Hill, called Funston. My progress, and collage of 3 examples. Still pondering. Gonna set it out today, see how I feel by this evening about frogging or continuing.

🧶 Solid or speckles work, as long as high contrast - great for stash-busting
🧶 Fingering weight, w optional "mohair dare"
🧶 Built-in "early exit" if running low
🧶 Has extender options, if you want a large "shlanket"

Perhaps you don't know about the "iron lung" that patients had to live in 24/7, for weeks, months, a lifetime. A lot of folks don't know, for real.
Is that want you want? Because THIS - these mid-1950s photos - will be the consequence. No kidding. Had a friend who spent part of her childhood in one. Then leg braces.

🧶 ADVICE NEEDED 🧶
I inherited a bunch of these 2 yarns. I don't normally care for knitting with 100% pure synthetics, but the need does arise for my wool-allergic friends.
Is anyone familiar with these yarns? Are they on the cheap end of the scale or...? How will it wear? Any insight will be gratefully received. Thank you!

🧶🧶🧶 These "Emotional Support Little Chickies" I've been knitting have been a big hit. Now the facility maintenance guy wants one, as do several of the CNAs and nurses.
A blast to make. Using both scrap yarn and mini-skeins. I de-skeined all those Munising into balls, so now I have a palette to choose from. Fun to make!

🧶🧶🧶 A bit more on the Reyna shawl, most likely mafe for a nurse here. This yarn, an MCN from Wendy's Wonders, is absolutely lovely. It fades from pink to gray to soft brown to a deep hunter green. Such a great "mindless knitting" pattern! My 3rd one.

It's #FOFriday and I have a FO! Needed a palette cleanser so took on doing another Emotional Support Chicken, my 3rd one. I'm finding that two fingering weight strands held together on size US2 needles is the perfect combo. This one, just like the little chickies, is made out of all scrap yarn. I find making "softies" to be very relaxing, no size/fit issues involved.

🧶🐔🧶🐔🧶 Another Emotional Support Chicken!
Using scrap yarn, this is 1st one I've made of wool (v. acrylic). I must say it's a much more pleasant knitting experience - 2 strands fingering held together on US2 needles, so very tight, but wool gives some spring.
Still, my upper arms and shoulders hurt! It's OK, I'm knitting off anxiety, and it's a workout my muscles need.

Avoided it, ever since I started knitting again. The whole knit then purl skip stitch then purl the knit but leave on needle then go between then whaaat? All with a tapestry needle.
Proud to say a. I did it, and b. It really does look good. I love the way there is basically no edge, stitches just disappear into the air. Hmm, might be my new go-to.

🧶🧶🧶 More on the Ivy Scarf, kerchief option, worked in Classic Elite Giselle mohair, color Cloud.
All charted, it's a surprisingly easy pattern to follow. Also offers long narrow version in two sizes.
Trying for one chart done daily. There are six, A through F. This is one of those times when it's helpful to have several WIPs going at once - I can switch back and forth.

🧶🧶🧶 New #WIP! This one is a triangular kerchief for a medical aide here, Marietta, who has been very helpful with me and my recovery.
Pattern is the Ivy Scarf, yarn is Classic Elite Giselle in the color Cloud, US4 ChiaoGoo needles. It's weightless, and except for the thinking back and frogging experience, a delight to knit with!

🧶🧶🧶 Ye Olde Stack 'O Swatches. Amazing how each one holds a memory. And, can see how y swatching in particular and knitting in general have improved.
Reflecting - This art/craft of ours is multi-dimensional. Some days I want to knit all the things. Other days it's sorting scraps, a match for the spoons I have.
I feel so blessed to have the chance to begin again with fiber arts. <gratitude>

🧶🧶🧶 Getting a whole lot of knitting prep done today! Swatched for the Ivy Scarf in Giselle, color Cloud.
The four holes at the bottom are a little hard to read, should have put more stockinette rows before beginning lace. Supposed to indicate US4 (four yo + k2 holes). Live and learn.
This one is for a CNA eg medical aide named Marietta here in the nursing home, who always goes the extra mile.

🧶🧶🧶 Hiya Kniterati, what do we think of this knitting? Would love some feedback on my yarn choice. It will be a balaclava-hood, called the Harris Hood.
Two strands of Rowan Fine Art variegated in pink-coral, and one strand of pink cashmere.
Also here is a picture of the woman it is for, and of the pattern. She wanted a bright color. Am I on the right path with this?

🧶🧶🧶 How did I not know this?!!
Per Norman at #NimbleNeedles on #YouTube, swatches can be marked for needle size by tying knots - in this case, seven knots for US7 needle. Because I NEVER remember.
Another way is to knit in the correct number as purl bumps right in the swatch. Great hack!

🧶🧶🧶 Here's a knitting math geek-out from Norman of NimbleNeedles on #YouTube...
I always learn so much from Norman. Here he takes a deep dive into stitch and row gauge. He maths A LOT. If you are math-phobic, Norman makes it clear, step-by-step. His thinking changes the role of getting gauge - the swatch is still important, but not everything. So interesting!

🧶🧶🧶 Hello #Knitterati! A new project, after Mom's sweater was finally completed...
Meet my new #WIP - #TheAspenWrap. This wrap (made one 15+ years ago, in storage now) was a fave. Cables grip the shoulders, and moss stitch part drapes nicely, longer than it might seem from these pix.

Anyway DEEPLY have wanted to organize my stash so can easily find things in my disabled state. Also, select new projects by starting with yarn vs pattern. Be super-clear about yardages on hand, etc. etc.
It is slow, repetitive work, but I'm finding myself in a chill meditative state, so it's all good! So happy I'm doing this! 😊

At long last, Mom's sweater went from being a #WIP to a #FO. Just needs a quick bath in conditioning wool wash, and softly blocked on some towels.
