21 years ago I bought this bottle of port the day the youngest daughter was born in order to toast to her coming of age this week. (If you like port it was a good vintage: intense cherry and blackberry notes.) The youngest daughter enjoyed our little ritual. A huge problem with US humanitarian aid — as opposed to UN aid — has always been that it comes with the strings of US colonialism attached.
Biden ended US funding for UNRWA, making USAID the primary source of aid to Palestine, and we witnessed the disastrous results in Gaza since 2023. Samantha Power threatened to fire USAID employees who countered the Biden narrative on Palestine. Last year USAID held its meetings at Israel’s notorious rape camp.
The irony of Trump and Rubio is that they have slashed the aid that previously functioned as a bribe to motivate acquiescence to US hegemony. This is the usual reactionary and fascist response: rule with the bigger stick and throw out the carrots. Their fallback is the state security apparatus, which will be unsustainable in the long run.
It’s imperialist either way, but currently there’s no pretense of charitable giving masking US power moves. And again ironically, Trump is going to send US clients looking for aid from US adversaries, namely China (against whom USAID propaganda has been directed, via “independent media” outlets).
