I remember the fuel crises, and carless days, so all my adult life Iʼve driven like a hypermiler—Iʼll coast in neutral, even if itʼs something you shouldnʼt do, and use higher gears rather than accelerate harder. I realize modern automatics are really economical, but for a lot of cars, manuals are thriftier, which is one reason I buy them. I might not save any more right now, but Iʼm glad these techniques are habitual. So many of my old Instagram posts were about the mpg I was able to achieve.

Love all the subtexts beyond the murder–mystery: the racist WASPs, Blanc (despite being white) still an outsider because he is southern, and of course, Marta Cabrero treated even worse as a Latina hired help. Pro tip: look in the direction of oncoming traffic before you cross on foot or take your car into the intersection. Had to honk and swerve twice in the last hour. The pedestrian wasn’t even on her phone, she plain didn’t look. Neither person did. Fortunately both roads were wide with no oncoming traffic that would put me at risk. Otherwise it would have been a very unwelcome test of the ABS. Thank God I was driving my car—a manual with a lower centre of gravity—and not Amanda’s.

Don’t know how people put up with #Google. I’ve done at least 20 of these so far. When you solve them, you think you are going to the results but crooked Google just puts up another puzzle. I am very glad I use @nprofile…54dw as a matter of course but every now and then you want to check how a site is performing in crooked Google. Looks like that is nearly impossible because it won’t show you results, only more and more and more captcha puzzles.

Down sides: it would have tied our firms possibly to more US ones, something that isn’t desirable now (though we would have had many years of reaping the benefits). Potentially this could have raised property prices more than they did, which was unforeseen. But I wanted people to be better off—and richer ratepayers meant money to fix infrastructure, which was an issue even in 2010.
The foreign-owned media never could comprehend any of this. Or were racist. One or the other.

When I think back to my mayoral campaigns, another focus was bringing high-value jobs, with frictionless exports, to the city. We already had a foundation: I wanted to build on it. Other cities showed that the proportion of tech businesses was higher and I knew wages had room to grow. Up sides: we might have been better off in our pockets. There would have been greater economic diversity to insulate us from public service cuts.

It was still competitive but like a typical US car firm, they went, ‘Let’s retreat and hand the market over to everyone else!’ Now Ford has so much capacity in Europe it is thinking of assembling Geelys, and they’re wondering why they don’t have much to sell … Even Ford dealers here tell me they have no idea what the bosses in the US are doing.

Went out to celebrate the MILʼs 81st birthday. Just the meals for my partner and me cost an eye-watering NZ$155. You might think, 'Itʼs a lot but at least you didnʼt have to cook.' Rot. There is no greater threat to the establishment than someone who sees that the emperor has no clothes. Though the threat is increased if that someone is a person of colour or a woman or trans. That will shake them to their core. They are already afraid to be shown up, but to be shown up by one of us would shatter them. We argued that if branding can by used for evil, then equally it could be used for good. Itʼs a pretty good read, though it is more a collection of essays than a cohesive volume.
