Okay, new question:
How do we know that deepseek and other chinese open source models are not trojan horses?
I mean, if you can embed malicious code/viruses in everything from jpgs, pdfs and word files... why not ggufs or whatever format they use?

I'm looking for a tool that lets me do live translation on a live conference, from speech in one language to text in another language (norwegian --> english).
Any recommendations? #AskFedi #speechtotext

Thanks! Does this mean that you can "tighten" the parameters as the models improve, or will LLMs always "play loose" in some form?

Haha, hooray for entertainment purposes!

Why is it that LLMs, which after all do some kind of statistical analyisis and number crunching, are not deterministic/consistent? Meaning they can't reliably produce the same output from the same prompt, or make small adjustments to a part of the output that doesn't affect the rest of the output?

If smaller teams, businesses, and concortiums could spin up an instance of Open Project in a few clicks, that would be REALLY powerful

I like more "qualitative" recommendations like asking people what they like to listen to, following content creators who showcase cool music, music blogs, articles, etc. Sure, it takes more effort than passively getting song recommendations from an algorithm, but then there's more intention behind it as well. It also adds a social component "hey I tried that album you mentioned, really like track 3"

I can't overstate how much I love libraries. I take my kids there all the time, we borrow about 10 childrens books a month, and you can access them after opening hours with a barcode and pin.
My local library has mostly books - plus some board games, console games, and plant seeds. I hope we continue in the direction with the finnish examples you mentioned.

2/2 She also challenges an intuition I firmly believe in, that it is possible to live privacy-respecting digital lives.
Yes, it technically is - but even if you do everything right on your end, with libre software and privacy respecting tools with encryption etc, your company, friends and relatives don't.
I'd like to hear if people here TRULY think it is possible to keep digitizing our lives more and more, without sacrificing privacy.

2026-06-14 19:55:32 UTC

1/2 YES! I have been looking for something like this brilliant talk by @npub1zcj…2yep , that explains in a clear way exactly why democracy dies as privacy is taken away from us https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSPRouBvgFE
She is also spot on about how technology is not completely neutral. Pots and pans invite you to make food. Guns don't. In the same way, digitization and surveillance tech invites people to spy on others.

my temporary workaround is manually selecting the photos in photosync. A bit tedious, but it keeps track of which hasn't been already uploaded, and it sorts them, so guess I'll stick with that for now

I'm slowly losing my mind over mobile uploads to my linux server.
The file structure on android is a clusterfuck. I need to sort all photos in /YYYY/MM/filename.jpg.
All the solutions I've looked at so far has some kind of limitation. It seems no solutions lets me 1) sort in in the proper structure, AND 2) avoid uploading thousands of duplicates already on the server, with cutoff or some other measure.
How do you guys solve this?? #selfHosting #android

Thanks for the info, I see there's a lot of nuances here.
I can only speak for myself, but my gripe is not with android per se, but googles dominance, duopoly, invasive play services/apps/data harvesting. If we can escape that with other android-variants, such as graphene, that's great (at least for pixels).
But we need other options also long term also, given how google is tightening their grip by making aosp more and more dependent on play services.

Nice! Phones are computers after all. It's so silly that we have been collectively gaslighted to think about devices as "this is a gaming console/TV/phone/etc" when in reality it's all computers, and should be able to run any program.

#BigTech - the data vampires that harvests as much data about you as possible, with their opaque platform silos, black boxes, targeted advertisements, dark patterns and attention seeking algorithms?
Or #PostmarketOS - free, open source, driven by a community of enthusiasts who share a common goal: to promote a healthier and more sustainable society. And have some fun while doing it!

What if someone instead modified an existing Linux distribution to make it run on smartphones, and made sure that each phone only need one unique package so that the rest can be shared and upstreamed? This could extend the life of countless phones around the world.
And it is exactly what the folks at #PostmarketOS are doing!

Sunday doodle:
Every time someone launches an Android phone, they fork (copy-paste) the entire code-base for each and every device and Android version. Keeping it up to date is a lot of effort for the vendors, but don't worry - they only do so for a limited amount of time, so that you have to buy a new phone instead!
