@nprofile…pfuj @nprofile…pcxw @nprofile…67n4 10g on my plain oatmeal every morning, sourced as locally as shops here will allow it on the off-chance the whole "this will help with your seasonal allergies" thing is true. It's an absolute delight!
But to the discussion as a whole, my MIL absolutely cannot recognize AI content, images or videos. This was true of the 6 finger era as it is now, when things are way more uncanny valley. My daughter has to continually point out the slop she shares in the family group chat.
I don't blame her, especially for feel-good stuff. It looks real and we *want* to believe it.

@nprofile…44dh Wow, that's shorter than I was expecting. Is that normal? It spends more time on process than getting within the same zip code of useful definitions. General purpose computing device sounds like the entertainment system in my car, for example.
I was expecting it to require 3rd party verification too, rather than the "DOB in your account profile" which I think it implies?

Anyone au fait with #linux on older Intel #Apple hardware?
I see some for sale locally (surplus store) and I think they would make excellent family "just need to do some odds and ends browsing" sort of machines. Maybe as the "family computer" in the dining room.
Obviously, even if it shipped macOS, it's going to be hilariously out of date. But will they run Linux OK? Nothing fancy, just Mint or something.
They are 27" A1419 iMacs, with 7th gen i5 and 8gb of memory, if that helps.

@nprofile…px8z It's wild the browser even has access to be able to collect this information. I hope with how locked down I have Firefox that it wasn't able to do these things.
That said, it's also utterly discouraging that everyone feels the need to keep an account, I'm trying to keep mine hibernated until I end up on the job market again.

Giving 25.10 Kubuntu a whirl, as I fancy trying out the latest stable plasma desktop. No option to use TPM for disk encryption, it just asked for a password.
Is the new TPM hardware disk encryption limited to #Ubuntu proper?

@nprofile…cl5w @nprofile…d82u Could I possibly ask you both, as professionals, a potentially silly question (perhaps it would help others).
I just read the blurb on Fastmail and they say emails are not E2E encrypted, and that requires PGP or something. OK, makes sense. But then they go on to say "emails are already encrypted at rest and in transit". Do they mean "encrypted between client and server" and "encrypted in the data center, but we retain keys so that we can serve warrants as law permits"?
Perhaps I'm just overthinking this, given emails are generally plain text. Ultimately, I'm just looking for a company who aren't going to casually train LLMs or otherwise act fast and loose with my data.
I thought I was savvy in this space, but shopping around I realize I am not.

@npub1dl0…49nf As someone who has administered forums for decades, I think I'd agree once moderation tools mature. I've watched enough fedi admin scenarios going down here to posit that we're not there yet. Forum moderation, while still tricky, has a vastly different scope by comparison.
