That said - I use Claude for where I can save months of work, but I'm still reviewing the code it creates.
Example: I needed a simple Windows app that worked as a photo carousel. It would have taken me a few weeks to write it, instead I just asked Claude to write it and boom - got it and the customer was happy.
I still reviewed its code before I signed it.
There's a time and a place for this AI stuff, and making deep fakes and other bullshit isn't it.

Hey Canadian Mastodonauts - here's where we're at.
We had some instability the last few days, and it's because the PostgreSQL server (the long term memory for our community) needed more resources.
Giving it more resources means we spend more money, so we went from USD$240 to USD$431/mo. This is, of course, unsustainable.
We're working hard to get this database moved in-house, so we can eliminate this cost, but we need to purchase an SSD and supporting hardware to do it.
We were grateful to receive a $250 donation from a community member. This would just about cover a 1TB NVMe drive, but we'd really like to put a 2TB drive in there to shut this database up for years to come.
At the moment, we have two months of reserves, and we should have three, so we're about $ 1,250 short of our goal.

That said, I'm committed to making sure that mstdn.ca is stable, and am committed to making sure our community is the best it can be for years ahead.
But folks, we're running on shoestrings, not financially, but in people.
In less words: Volunteers are being abused on the fediverse.
In terms of me, I'm running on fumes. For a community of 36,000 people, there should be zero reason why the technical administration lies purely on my shoulders. I should be able to get on a Discord call and work through these issues.
As it is, here I am, in my 8x4 office, stressing covering the fact we're not delivering for our community completely alone.

My dedication to our community remains steadfast. I've travelled this country with the hopes of networking and growing the fediverse and our community.
However I've begged for help in exactly this area for as long as Elon has owned Xitter. I've begged our community for folks to step up to create a society.
Yet no one has stepped up. We've all had to figure this technical shit out on our own, in our own silos, and it seems no one wants to share their knowledge.
My sleepless nights of dealing with databases, and endless hours of googling is really starting to wear on me.
24 hours ago I asked for some help and it went to deaf ears. I'm doing everything I can but I'm really starting to burn the candle on both ends.
This is the problem with where we're at with the fediverse. We have people bending over backwards and there's no rescue boat in sight when they need help.
If we truly want to build community, we do it together.
At what point is my cup empty? There's 36,000 people here.

I've reverted back to a blank new database, and pulling the origin DB again.
The good news - after tweaking the new server postgresql config, ingest performance is nearly 12x what it was.
Once it's done, and the vacuum completes, I'm going to give it another go.
Incredibly stressed over this. I really want to get back to business as normal.

it's the last thing - a 67GB database - to get off of the DO cloud for our own hardware.
Our own hardware doesn't come without cost, and I'm looking forward to explaining that in our State of the Instance, but this weekend was an all hands to try to figure out what the heck was going on on with our latency.
Turns out if was (probably) our PGSQL database at DO.

Oh yes! We moved off the cloud. It was growing way too expensive.
Three separate internet connections for redundancy, but our biggest gap at the moment is if we lose power. It doesn't happen often, but if it does, I have a gas generator on standby, or I can connect the instance to my car and use V2L.

Hey folks, I know Giving Tuesday was yesterday and I purposefully avoided it because there's many causes that deserve your dollars more than us.
If you have something left, I'm contributing more to keep our community alive than what we're getting in, and I know that we can fix that.
If everyone who read this contributed $5, we'd be in a much better position, paying off backed-up invoices.
If everyone who read this committed $10 monthly, it'd pay off our hardware deficit. The hardware I bought to get us off the cloud, I bore the entire $25,000 cost. I'm fine with this as long as we can chip away at it... But as it is, we're not.

Today saw one of the hardest working, most loyal, and kindest cats cross the rainbow bridge.
When I say hardest working, he really took his job protecting the acreage seriously. From squirrels, pheasants, foxes, to even staring down the nose of deer, he protected the acreage with the utmost diligence and bravery.
He was always the first to greet us when we came home, and knew what our vehicles sounded like. He’d follow us around the acreage inspecting and supervising as he went.
But at the end of the day, he could often be found having a snooze in his favourite spot: my Dad’s lap in the garage.
My brother put really well today: we both knew more years with Cinder in our lives than without.
Cinder was 21 human years old.
