I broadly agree - not so much with the rules of chess analogy but with the broader point about undermining any challenge to power. I just don't see how that was converted into an investment pitch for the $$$ spent on developing diffusion models. LLMs can at least make (false!) claims about productive efficiencies and flaunt the idea of AGI.

I spent a short amount of time around a group of Googlers years ago, when they were doing some pro bono help with a community tech hack event in Sarajevo; they had an intense group-think vibe, a shared mantra ('how do we make this project scale?') and a tightly-parameterised emotional range (always positive, enthisastic but not too much).

AI is used as a diversion from restructuring and redistribution. This means it functions in exactly the same way as support for the far right. Platforming both AI and the far right are attempts by elites to cover their own failures, but both will accelerate forms of disintegration.

Fascinating to see investor unease about gen-AI. Affirms much of our collective critique, but from a toxic standpoint. Also, even if gen-AI flames out, it still leaves the less visible and IMO more violent predictive AI to wreak damage in welfare, healthcare etc.
