Ukraine has to be trusted to know it's own strengths and weaknesses, and deal with them. At least the ministers don't suddenly fall out of high windows, as happens regularly in Russia.

The US has exported its system to other countries, who have generally done better with it - with good/free healthcare, free/cheap education, etc.
More than half of Americans don't vote, so they get a money-focused system supported by big donors, dying from the inside.

They've had half a century to diversify and haven't, despite having lots of money and investment. The big question is, who has been bribing the Alberta gov't? One guess. Follow the money. Same thing is happening in real time in the US.

Unfortunately, there are few movies that do justice to the books they were supposedly based on. Perhaps it's impossible. Even LOTR/The Hobbit made big compromises, that they tried to justify. Some of the changes were egregious, for effect, not plot.

''The Martian' movie was well done and a good tribute to the book - until the climax and ending, where they blew it big time.
'Androids' has so little relation to Blade Runner, that reading it would not improve appreciation of either it or Philip K Dick's writing.
I don't hold out a lot of hope for 'Hail Mary'.

Racism built every country that had an indigenous population that colonial countries needed gone in order to exploit resources. The US is not unique, merely one of the more intractable.

Just finished 'Worlds' by Joe Haldeman (1955). Terrific book. The future dates are off and some technology is not yet realized - but the current political, social and economic situation on our planet is horrifyingly close to that described. We could end the same way, if sanity doesn't prevail soon.

I'm not a newbie (been using Linux since the late 90s), or I would not have been able to get Mint working at all. It took a lot of time, research and t&e. I had Ubuntu originally, and it's worse. The version I had couldn't be upgraded, so I switched to Mint, whose upgrade is possible - with more work. I decided to keep the version I have for now. Mint does what I need, but I haven't switched from Win8, as I wanted to. All Linux distros are like this - because every need is different.

I stopped upgrading Windows at Win8 and am still using it on my main computer. I have Mint on a second computer. It was a bear to install on a new hard drive, because the computer had been set up for Win10, and BIOS settings had to be changed. It still loads very slowly, so must look at Bios again. Otherwise, I like Mint very much, but upgrade to latest, I hear, is fraught. This is why people get turned off by Linux. Little things that take a lot of time to fix.
