My .notdef glyph will be made only of the "NO TENGWA" (text) and nothing else (no punctuation).
An equivalent of the usual/comon "NO GLYPH" (used in GLYPHS app).
The word tengwa means "letter" in the Quenya language. Those using this Font will know the Elvish word Tengwa and its meaning as it will be part of the Font Name.

My "notdef glyph" within Elvish (angle) brackets — brackets are always angle brackets in Tengwar — and some other punctuation glyphs that are not used as Latin punctuation, these will be explained in the PDF provided with the Tengwar Fonts.

What is the mode of Beleriand? It is the mode used on the Doors of Moria.
The text is Sindarin. But when Tolkien drew for the first time the tengwar text, Sindarin did not exist. The language was called Noldorin and the text of the doors did go through several modifications. The most important being the removal of the mutations of almost all the Noldorin words: Dhurin for Durin, Vória for Mória (later Moria) and mhellon for mellon "friend".
One mutated word remained thiw (tiw) "letters".

@nprofile…qx50 I am not really concerned about Tolkien's Middle-earth†.
I am concerned rather about the design of my Tengwar Sans. I could go humanist sans-serif or more geometric or maybe even mixing the 2 into a new unique "tengwar style".
(† it must be written that way — not Middle Earth — because it is simply an English name for Europe, still used with than meaning.)

I am still unsure about my Tengwar Sans.
Do I go Gill Sans or do I go Futura?
My goal is to make the Tengwar feel closer, easy to read, modern, not "Fantasy" or "Middle-earth" anymore. Both Gill Sans and Futura are great directions but I have to choose only one. No? I should not "mix"? Any thought?

Beside the Tengwar, Tolkien created many other writing systems. There is enough work for an army of Type Designers.
I hope to sparkle some interest with my publications. I cannot create all the scripts Tolkien coined. The more the better!
Below another interesting script that Tolkien called "Cursive Runes".
These are the cursive forms of the Elvish Runes, the Angerthas in the Appendix E of "The Lord of the Rings".

My ultimate goal is to find Fonts to use in my (future) Middle-earth Atlas.
I would like to make general Middle-earth maps in an "old style" (1700-1750) and more modern 1890/1900 style maps close up (The Shire, Gondor, Númenor etc.).

Tolkien wrote in one of his letters that beside languages he was interested in plant science.
Tolkien indeed took time to imagine Elvish plant classification. Not a scientific like one by von Linné but an everyday classification based on outside shape.
In Quenya "trees" fall into 3 categories alda, orne or tussa.
The Quenya word TUSSA is written in Tengwar according to the ára-tencele mode.

I just learned that Windows has still 'problems' showing Fonts on screen, and users could use ClearType and MacType.
How does this impact my Font design on my Mac (OS 14.7.6)?
I am a long time Mac user. I bought my first Macintosh computer in 1986. My first computer was a TRS-80 (1979).
I have never used a PC with Windows at home only at work while working on PCDOS programing with an engineering French company. I mostly worked on Sun-3 with SunOS while programing.

I downloaded the ‘The Stroke’ by Gerrit Noordzij 2 days ago.
Also, I should draw on paper first and then scan? I have been mostly drawing directly on screen with FontLab8. It seems now to be a beginners mistake.

I reworked the glyph for 11 in duodecimal trying to make it looking less like a Tengwa (letter) and more like a 'number' (abstract).

There is no X in Elvish. 🤔
The Elvish Rune X has a meaning too.
How's .notdef in other Non-european languages/font/systems?
Should I design an Elvish one?

Tolkien wrote the Latin language using Tengwar. Tolkien used in fact the Tengwar to write several natural languages beside English.
Below Tolkien's manuscript with my transliteration.
I call this mode the "Latin full mode".
