Sick and tired of #pihole , required #vpn to connect from outside home, #vps to avoid #NAT issues and for resilience, ...
I'm back to #NextDNS and even then, I might just configure a standard #quad9 DNS on my home router and rely on #Mullvad VPN for day to day usage.
This is too complex, too manual, and as much as I love control, this is affecting my daily dose of fun online or even offline.
(This is in NO way criticism to those great solutions nor to those who have the patience to get it running, this is just me, lucky for not needing a too strict threat model and being tired 😅❤)

And the most pervert thing is, IMHO, that the #whatsapp encryption is indeed strong, preventing the *service* from leaking. It is sort of a "safe pipe"...
... But since #Meta has access to your keyboard, microphone, camera, contacts, etc, they can anyway intercept anything you type, do and say even before it is sent through this "safe pipe". Same thing on the receiver side!
Even worse: why the hell would they advertise if it would not see a clear return on investment, either financial or via the exploitation of our private data to feed their #IA and profiling algorithms?
I don't get how so many people don't question this!

Bon, je vais râler un peu. Je m'en excuse d'avance.
J'ai progressé sur mon #raspberrypi , sur mon #VPS , j'ai quelques services qui tournent (#pihole et #syncthing ). Bref, mon #SelfHosting avance.
J'ai envie de continuer: une instance #deltachat , éventuellement #mastodon , ...
Et là, je trouve humblement que de fameuses difficultés débarquent: bases de données, gestion des versions de #python , #docker (qui semble résoudre ces difficultés, mais qui refuse de marcher chez moi!).
Oui, la communauté est géniale, je lis, j'apprends, mais j'ai mes moments de découragement, dont maintenant...

I'm facing 1 weird issue when trying to make tailscale work with #pihole
My Pihole setup works when tailscale is off. When I turn it up, I:
- make sure that my client has "use tailscale for DNS" set to "ON"
- on my tailscale admin > DNS, I have added the tailscale IP of my Pihole as the *only* "Global nameservers" and I make sure that "Override DNS Servers" is set to "ON".
But then, no URL gets resolved anymore 😰
Did I miss something despite have read https://tailscale.com/kb/1114/pi-hole ?

Being on my way out of #firefox (for #privacy and #ethics reason), I need a browser which is:
- #opensource
- Runs on #linux , #macos and #iOS (I'll leave Apple once device is too old, but for now it's a must)
- ideally, syncs bookmarks between devices
- supports extensions (blockers, password manager)
- with #passwordmanager , benefit from auto-fill
Considering #duckduckgo , #OrionBrowser , #Brave (but I don't like their approach with coins etc).
I'll update this thread as my investigation progresses 😅

I am (was? 😰) so tempted to make the move from #obsidian to #orgmode ...
Going back to my IT roots (17 years without #emacs 😅) and finally get something that fully meets my needs...
I've read a lot, have setup Emacs and #org config on my Mac. Typed my first notes, first TODOs...
And then I've hit the one hurdle that was too much, after having beat many other ones. When setting up a capture:

It's been a while, but I'm really looking for a proper solution to follow my #RSS feeds, keep some of my favorites articles, and have a #readlater solution.
I'm a fan of #reeder but I honestly don't like the new layout... Reeder Classic is great but understandly has no "read later" or "keep article" feature.
Is there any consolidated solution for this, preferably #opensource (but ready to pay!)?
Or should I keep my Reeder Classic for RSS and take a separate solution for "read later" and some favourite articles?

I've been following #astrophotography hashtag for a while now. Learnt many things, and am very tempted to get my first device. I'm an #IT guy, so I'd love a "smart" version, to ease my entry into that world and make nice pictures.
I'm very tempted by the #SeastarS50 , I've also read about the #dwarf3 , but I'd love to take shots of our planets. Looks like those devices can't do it.
Are there beginner friendly recommended models to capture pictures of our planets?
Is it better to buy a telescope on which you plug my #iPhone (but then it won't follow moving stuff), or a standalone device?
Is it possible without spending more than 1000€/$ ? 😅

Next year... next year... after a big announcement months ago already. I can't help but think that #Europe is trying to show their strength, but that their timeline they "impose" is so long that the initiative becomes almost irrelevant.
I refuse to use #whatsapp and I'm waiting for #DMA to really take effect to communicate again with some old friends that never migrated to a "decent" messaging platform.
When will that finally happen?

I've loved #AnimalWell so much! Best #indiegame in years, IMO.
And I'm now trying #Fez which seems to be a great #videogame too, but I can't enjoy it. I don't know why.
Actually, every time I was stuck in #AnimalWell , I still could look for other ways, it didn't feel like "stuck". In #Fez , it's like I'm constantly hitting a wall ☹️

I've moved *all* my reminders to #obsidian (#obsidianmp). It feels good to have notes and todos in one place... But the lack of notification (iOS) is so annoying! I understand that the app is not platform-specific, but without notifications, I forget some timely actions 🙄
I could consider moving away, but I use #transclusion a lot. Without it, I can't manage stuff...

I just made the switch from #Firefox to #Vivaldi 🤩
Firefox didn't cause any actual issues I must say, or at least not yet, but that "ad" move, no thank you.
I'm impressed with the speed of #vivaldi, the ease of onboarding (1-click import from several browsers 🤩), and the number of features and configuration options, including native ad-blocking (choosing the lists you want) and the #chrome extensions!
I can't recommend it enough. And even more urgently for those using #Chrome 🤮😉

I really would like to #selfhost my mail... already have my own domain, I have a #synology, but I find it a bit too risky to miss messages if my NAS has an issue. Plus, port forwarding etc...
Should I consider a #VPS or is that too much?
Is there any good compromise between really managing your mail service without getting drowned by security/availability aspects?

For #notes, if you wish to leverage on your #proton subscription (I'm a subscriber too!), you could way for standard notes.
On my side, I've fallen in love with #obsidianmd. Steep learning curve, not #foss, but plugins and mechanisms like #transclusion are WOW 🤩
I can describe more if you wish.
For reminders, I've moved to a #synology and I sync calendars and notes together via #caldav. Works fantastic. BTW, #synology is extremely reliable and easy to install and maintain!

From a humble citizen point of view, I'm excited to see those initiatives coming one after the other, but then I can't see what progress is being made with them. Do they have a place where they share updates?
For example, on #DMA, what is concretely happening with #whatsapp? When can I expect to communicate with a #whatsapp user from #matrix?
When do we get a non #webkit #browser on #iOS?
I know those things happen outside of the institutions, but I have the feeling that tech giants push back so much, that it almost is a lost cause (slooow progress, no results?).
Isn't the only option to stay fully away from those giants?
