I'm inclined to say that neoliberalism is really a strategy of some sort.
Strategies are not plans, neither real theories, they're something in between. It's more a set of manoeuvres for advancement.
The best way to counter it is, simply put, to form a counter strategy.
So Americanism is for me neither an insight, nor a thing that can guide action. I think my preference is to stay away from that kind of labeling.

Part of the issue is the unequal division of fruits of labor: people lack time and attention, or are induced to feel that way. Big money gets more sway.
Both consumerism and meaningless jobs create a cycle of exasperation. Meaningless is demeaning and drives down labor cost.
These mechanisms seem to form an re-enforcing cycle.
This is I think at the core a problem of neoliberalism. It is Anglo-Saxon I think, and don't count out the Dutch ;-)

A good question. Allow me to ponder more. I'll try to mind my English.
Part of the issue is that consumerism makes passive, and is focused on 'wants'; which are never fulfilled.
Part of the issue is that simple and easy are convoluted in society. The former takes effort, education and talent. The latter often makes things more complex.
That in turn is driven by the fact that the goal has become more, instead of why, how, what are our needs?

Yes. It used to be that people paid for newspapers. My financial contribution was an act of trust that newspapers would sort and package information.
Similarly my contribution to a political party was an act of trust.
This bond of trust gave me a sense of connectedness and belonging.
Lack of trust, with that lack of willingness to pay, allowed manoeuvres that accelerated the cycle.
The point is, as a society we did not keep our eyes on the ball. And big money is exploiting that.

We are currently swimming in reflexive control like fish in the water.
Social media, and the fact that regular media require hype for financing, and the fact that politicians require hype for reach, are feeding this cycle.
Financing these mechanisms in a more normal way can cool down the systems and help break this cycle.

Here is a follow up.
Sketching some solutions, far from perfect. From my experience in design, the more constraints there are, the smaller the solution space becomes.
And that is a good thing. A large solution space suggests many solutions. In a small solution space a design becomes more obvious.
There are two connected solution parts that are interesting:
1. Organizing feedback loops in science, including review
2. Creating trust networks both for scientists and articles.

Note by coincidence or not, 20% is usually also considered the right amount of slack for a lot of systems.
Zooming out. A lot of systems in the end require change, nothing stays the same. So this slack might turn out to be the difference between 'running down' and 'sustainable maintenance'.

Perfect, for me, this is all in line with my thinking, and what I said. I hope we can avoid language debates; pulling ahead and perfect language are often at odds.
Rounding it up, governments feel the need for valuation, partially because of the attribution of funds, and partially, well, because middle-management.

It is here where I would like to link back to my remark of helio centric clock work like view of science, whilst it is bazar.
There is a paradigm shift there.
A replacement system should provide the scientist with a navigatable view of publications, and a way to push publications.
The idea that there could be a global ranking system is false I think. That might very well turn out to be the culprit. There is no 'mommy/daddy' of science. That was the whole point, no?

For me this tells something. A lot of the challenges are not unique, perhaps the expertise part is. Again not claiming a solution here.

My intuition is that science is currently organized like a helio-centric Newtonian model. As if science is like building a clock, adding precision parts in a oversee-able whole.

As a consultant I see a lot of different businesses from within.
It is the same there. Everyone not executing has been removed. Companies often have no knowledge of how their primary business functions. Big decisions are based on large consultancy templates.
And then there are a lot of 'entrepreneurs' profiting of the government. Delivering thin services without being really accountable, because to hold some accountable you have to have knowledge.

The same way that it is just very easy to influence European politics. Spend 15 million euros per country per year for four years at a total cost of 1500 million and you surpass each government majority in influence.

I stopped using Google since 4-5 months.
It's not only the AI slop, the constant reviewing of all the pages of results was a drain on my energy.
This is partially the result of the model using my energy to train their model, and partially because worse results generate more clicks.

An authoritarian political model does not fit the U.S., having an open economy.
Problem is, there are many actors in the current U.S. administration trying to enact this model.
The thinking behind this model aligns though with oligarchs, ogranized crime, partriarchy, and West Coast technology moguls.
Russia's success with this model is also very limited.
Donald, enabled by Russia, is the galvanizer of this effort. And Russia has its own reasons for doing this. 1/2
