They just dropped a press release explaining why they chose not to release the new Siri AI in the EU: https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2026/06/due-to-dma-siri-ai-delayed-in-eu-for-ios-27-and-ipados-27/
Long story short, their argument is "the EU Commission wants us to give any AI system unlimited access to a user's device", "we proposed a technical solution that we would roll out over an 18-month period", and "They said no"

Big news!
I'm launching a tiny Mac app 🥺🔍🤏
:tinystart: It's called TinyStart, and it's a lightweight Launcher and Emoji picker for macOS!
Unlike Spotlight, TinyStart is super fast at showing results and launching apps. It never becomes overcrowded with search results you don't need, and it lets you open URLs, perform web searches with custom search engines, and quickly open folders in Finder.
Oh and yes, I think the Emoji picker is pretty good too. It's everything the default macOS Emoji picker isn't: it's fast, it lets you insert Emojis in any text field, it isn't picky about keywords, and it learns your favorite Emojis over time.
Get TinyStart at https://tinystart.app: it's €5, you pay for it once and future updates are free!
also I made a lil' video to show you what it looks like:

RE: https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/116206874904164848
This is also absolutely true for software localization.
Translation tools are useful when I’m in charge of how I use them, and when I have contextual hints to help me interpret them.
But when a piece of software is localized exclusively using machine translations, not only are the resulting translations of poor quality (yes, even when done with LLMs — I’d even argue that they’ve gotten worse with LLMs), but also, as a user, I end up at a loss as to how to deal with them, except by switching the app back to English (if the option exists).
Suffice it to say that you’ve massively failed at your localization mission if the result is so bad that you’ve made me fall back to a language that I don't natively speak.

Sigh… yes, there is a very true fact that "a new generation" of AI developers, vibe coders, and tech commentators does exist and exclusively posts and promotes stuff on X instead of Mastodon and Bluesky -- and as a result we on the latter platforms are not aware of everything that goes on over there.
But once you've made that observation, why would you not pause for a minute and ask yourself why that overlap is there?
Why would you not conclude anything from the fact this entire new generation of AI enthused developers are hanging out almost *exclusively* in the Internet's largest nazi bar?
Why would you even mention this observation as part of your argument if not to state that conclusion?

I am in disbelief that the only argument I'm seeing mobilized against age verification laws (and their accompanying social media bans) is “It sucks for privacy!”, and not “why the fuck are we okay imposing a digital jail on every single child?”
Digital privacy matters and it's an important reason why these laws must be repealed at all costs, but let's also please humanize the issue here: social media bans for minors are just another massive chapter in the conservative's playbook to deprive any social class that's not ‘adult white males’ of their bodily and existential autonomy.
That same playbook has chapters we're already familiar with, including staples such as “let's force gay kids back into the closet”, “trans kids shouldn’t be able to decide anything for themselves”, “women shouldn't have a bank account”, and “abortion should be illegal”.

Okay, I've disabled Reduce Motion, and the issue still occurs, so it's not related to that after all, sowwy.
But it might be even more specific than that: it's when navigating back with the ← arrow key, then attempting to scroll *while the mouse cursor is on top of the Ivory window*.
The view will not scroll until I move the mouse outside of the Ivory window, then back over the window (without clicking).
Here's my attempt at recording it (keep in mind that I'm scrolling my mouse wheel after I've hit the ← arrow key):

@npub1lyn…ve6v Hello there! I've noticed a bug in Ivory for Mac when Reduce Motion (the system accessibility setting) is on.
It's hard to show in a screen recording, but when Reduce Motion is on, there’s a bug that prevents scrolling the timeline for 2 seconds or more when navigating back from a post's details view.
I suspect this is related somehow to how Ivory’s sliding animation is replaced by a fading animation when Reduce Motion is on.

TIL the red traffic light button *kills* apps in iPadOS 26?? 🤨
At this point, it's pretty ingrained in people's minds that the red button doesn't actually kill apps on macOS (it only closes the window). It has worked like that for the past 24 years.
Why in the world would Apple add macOS's emblematic traffic lights to iPadOS only to assign the most crucial of them a totally different function?

And if that's not clear:
No, to a French-speaking person, using "Intempéries" to describe a heat wave makes absolutely no sense.

2025-08-11 17:33:43 UTC

Even Apple's to blame here.
Here's the Weather app incorrectly labeling a *heat wave* weather alert as “Intempéries,” which is only used in French to describe *wet* weather conditions, such as storms, heavy rain, or snow, and never in the context of extreme heat.
I strongly suspect the person who localized this string simply looked up the translation for the original string “Severe Weather” and chose “Intempéries” as the first result they found.
I filed a feedback for this issue almost exactly 3 years ago today, but Apple marked it as “works as currently designed.”

Btw, English-speaking devs: I'd rather you not offer any localization for your app than some really poor automatic (or even LLM-powered) translations that end up being confusing and frustrating more than anything.

So, the last time Tim Cook bribed Trump (with a $1M donation to his inauguration fund) the Apple tech bros kept telling us that was a personal donation from Cook, not from Apple the company.
What's their line of defense gonna be now that the bribe has a big ass Apple logo on it?

I've been getting some questions from admins regarding @npub1lge…urx0 and its compatibility with Mastodon 4.4 releasing next week:
Unfortunately, I've been overwhelmed lately, so I was not able to release the new version of Tangerine UI ahead of the upcoming Mastodon release like I usually do.
However, *yes*, I am working to adapt Tangerine UI to Mastodon 4.4. It just may not be ready on day one.
In the meantime, nothing will dramatically break if you update to 4.4 and don't wait for Tangerine UI. Just note that users of the theme may encounter broken UI elements here and there (especially on small screens where there have been some significant UI changes in 4.4).
I recommend you enable notifications on the @npub1lge…urx0 account, where I will inform everyone as soon as Tangerine UI is ready sometime next week!
Thank you for your patience (and sorryyy)

There is now a firmly documented pattern of Israel ordering civilians in Gaza to evacuate into "safe" zones, then directly bombarding those same zones in the following days.
This is a full-on pattern of ethnic cleansing, and methodically executed genocide.

@npub1lyn…ve6v Hi! I have a question regarding the Mac app: I remember in Tweetbot being able to swipe left with two fingers on the trackpad over any post in the timeline to quickly flick open the detail view (instead of clicking on posts).
Afaict, this still seems to be a thing in Ivory; however, I find that it triggers very inconsistently, or perhaps that the sensitivity of the two-finger swipe is very low and makes it hard to perform as a result. That being said, swiping back from a post to the timeline with two fingers is very easy to do and pretty reliable.
Is that something you've noticed?

“But Tim Cook made that donation out of his own pocket, not Apple's!”
Tim Cook is the CEO of Apple. The CEO of Apple chose to donate $1M to the man enacting catastrophic policies targeting trans people and minorities in the US.
To decouple that donation from the fact that he holds this position as the head of Apple; to pretend that Tim Cook exists publicly as anything other than the CEO of Apple; I think it would be dishonest, to say the least.
My point stands firmer than ever now that Apple has introduced its 2025 Pride Collection. The company has brought this criticism upon itself.
They are the ones choosing to sell Pride merchandise and simultaneously curtsy to the Trump administration. They are the ones making the decision not to protect their trans employees, not to increase their financial support to trans organizations, and not to utter the words “LGBTQ Pride“ at any other occasion this year than when they need to sell Apple Watch bands.

”But what did you expect Niléane? We can’t expect the CEO of a tech giant to behave any differently.“
Let me get this straight, Internet friend: Because tech giants have selfish economic interests, we shouldn't be criticizing their behavior and expect anything from them? We should all just let it go and move on because that's what big companies do?
Apple is successfully protecting its economic interests, so they're exempt from all criticism. Is that what you're saying?
I still fail to understand what is it that you people are trying to say when you reply to this criticism with “Tim Cook is just doing his job. He's protecting Apple's interests.” — I'm not denying that, and no one is.
The only thing we're saying is: the successes Tim Cook has had protecting the interests of the company have a devastating human cost. And you are choosing to dismiss or minimize that fact entirely.

2025-05-08 11:42:51 UTC

To the Apple fans fixated on defending Tim Cook, who have been clogging my replies on Mastodon and Bluesky over the past few days following my story on @npub1sz3…05rp (https://www.macstories.net/stories/are-pride-wallpapers-and-a-watch-band-enough-in-2025/). Here is my response to you:
In 2014, Brendan Eich, creator of the JavaScript language and now CEO of Brave Software, was appointed as CEO of Mozilla. I will quote his Wikipedia page for you (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brendan_Eich#Appointment_to_CEO_and_resignation), and you will very quickly understand why:
> The appointment triggered widespread criticism due to Eich's past political donations – specifically, a 2008 donation of $1,000 to California Proposition 8, which called for the banning of same-sex marriage in California, and donations in the amount of $2,100 to Proposition 8 supporter Tom McClintock between 2008 and 2010.
The news of Eich's donations led to major protests inside the company and among Mozilla's supporters, volunteers, and users. Most notably, half of Mozilla's board stepped down. Which ultimately led to him resigning, just 11 days later:
> After 11 days as CEO, Eich resigned on April 3, 2014, and left Mozilla after public outrage. In his personal blog, he posted, "under the present circumstances, I cannot be an effective leader".
I would argue that Tim Cook's donation is an even worse offense than Eich's. Cook made his $1M donation to President Trump's inauguration fund while it had already been public knowledge for years that he would immediately start his mandate by rolling back LGBT rights in devastating ways.
I think it would be more than fair to call for his resignation for the same reason that it was fair to call for Eich's resignation back in 2014. And yet, it seems that a majority of people are choosing to dismiss Cook's donation and subsequent stance regarding Trump's administration as either necessary, pardonable, or irrelevant.

The UK Labour Party has become a cowardly collective of misogynistic and transphobic conservatives with a red coat of paint.
This is what happens when you spend years eradicating any “radical” voices from your platform just to win elections.
In the end, not only are they jeopardizing their own chances at winning anything ever again, but in so doing, they're putting the rights of all women at risk.

It’s remarkable that two of the only times we've ever seen him mention Gaza were:
• When he posted (then deleted) “Fuck around and find out” in reaction to Israel’s bombing and killing thousands of civilians a day.
• When, in the matter of two Microsoft employees publicly calling out the trillion-dollar company against their complicity in the genocide of the Palestinian people, his only choice was to defend the company and question the integrity of the protesters. https://daringfireball.net/linked/2025/04/05/microsoft-50-employee-protests
