Watched Obsession last night. It was alright. You could tell that they took a simple idea and just tried to stretch it to be movie length.
But they did a good job of it for as low as their budget was. However if you aren't aware of that or the history of the writer/director, it's just an okay movie.

Over the last few years I've been watching what was once an important part of the culture on Mastodon, and the rest of the Fediverse, disappear.
In the beginning, people didn't post selfies, food, politics, violence, or religion without a content warning or a hash tag. Care was given to those who may be struggling for one reason or another.
This was supposed to be a place for everyone. Not just for those who wanted to push their agendas out into the world.
But when the Twitter exodus happened, and a ton of people poured in here, they either left here quickly because of the pushback of the culture that was already here, or they stayed and ignored the culture altogether. Not fully understanding the culture or it's necessity.
And this continued even after the exodus of Twitter, because the lack of empathy or understanding for those who struggled with these things was no longer in the forefront. New people came in without an understanding because only a few people were still continuing the tradition.
I still get messages from people asking me why I CW food and selfies and I have to explain to them that it's because some people struggle with eating and that some autistic people have issues with direct eye contact.
And half the time I tell them this, they push back. They don't want their selfies put behind a CW or add a hashtag that can be filtered out because it takes too much effort and they don't think they should have to change the way they do things for others.
I get it. Cultures change as they grow. I'm just a little disappointed and sad that it has. To me, it's just a reflection of a larger issue in the world. A lack of empathy.

So, I let my head clear yesterday, and now there's a plan of action to move my #Peertube instance where I'll have more storage and power.
If everything goes right it should be done next week. I'll be able to offer more space and hopefully attract users who aren't just looking for a place to put their random videos.
Or that may change too. We'll see.
The point is, I'm filled with a new hope. Let's go!

I'm also considering giving up on running a #PeerTube instance.
I haven't made any videos for a while. I don't livestream as often as I did. People aren't joining like I hoped they would. The only people that request accounts are people who just want some place to put their random videos. Something I explicitly say that I am not interested in. Yet they still request an account?
Maybe it's just time to quit?
I wanted to support the Fedi with this but I think I might just be done. I feel so disheartened.

Because I'm pissed at my #PeerTube managed hosting, and because I know I'm paying a lot for that managed hosting (45GB for $50) I am now considering moving my instance to some where else that may be more affordable and provide me with more storage.
If you know of another PeerTube managed hosting service besides Fedihost.co please point me in their direction!
And I know this might be a slim chance but if you already run and manage your own PeerTube instance (without managed hosting) and you'd like to make $50 a month by setting up an instance for me (and helping me move mine) and to do all of the behind the curtain techy stuff, ( upgrades, figuring out issues, etc) hit me up in a DM and we'll talk.

Did you all know that online notary in the US is a thing?
I just learned about this the other day. Apparently it's been a thing for about 4 years now. Real easy to do. I used it for my fathers power of attorney. Took all of 5 minutes and only cost $25.
I called Chase to make sure they accept this and they said they did. About 50 states accept it.
Since we don't have a car getting anywhere to do it was frustrating. I'm glad this option exists.

RIP Helen.
When @nprofile…ljv9 came into my life many years ago, she had this plump tabby and mean old cat named Helen.
Helen would scratch your legs or your arms or any part of you that she could reach if you got near her. She didn’t want to be touched, and she didn’t want to be picked up.
But I knew how to win her heart. I slowly got her to start trusting me. I patiently worked with her for years until finally, she stopped attacking people when they walked by her, and even started showing affection.
The last couple of years have been hard for her, but we’ve tried to take care of her the past we could. We don’t really know how old she was as she was a rescue cat. But we know she was old.
A few nights ago, we brought her upstairs to our bedroom as we tend to do when it’s obvious that she wants to socialize, and we lay her on the bed, give her some treats and spend some hours just letting her be with us and petting her. I will miss Helen. I will miss her coming up to me to lay at my feet when I’m on my laptop. I will miss her cries when she wants to come upstairs. I will miss her soft purr as she slept with my hand on her back.
She was a good cat. And we will all miss her.

What's up party people?
Well, I've got an update on our car situation for anyone that's been paying attention. We're friendly with a neighbor who asked us if we'd like to buy their EV from them. It's a 2026 Toyota EV with only 6400 miles on it. She's asking a very fair market value for it. We're very interested because just about every dealership is asking for about $4000 as a down payment in order to get the monthly payment to something we could afford. So if we can get an auto loan from the bank, without a down, we'd be able to afford it.
It's probably the best deal we'll find.
Other then that, #today I'll be getting ready to record a music reaction video with my long time friend Ray. We've come up with what we think will be an interesting approach. We're going to pick at random an artist that neither of us are familiar with, possibly in a genre we aren't familiar with, and we're going to take their most popular song, and a random song of theirs, and react to both. First the popular, then the random.
We think it will be fun to watch.
Other then that, it's a chill day where we'll just avoid the sun as much as possible.

I’m so glad that I decided to repurpose my oldest laptop running Linux Mint, into a Jellyfin server. I have it running with the lid shut and the screen off, and it just sits there doing its thing for the last several months now. Every week I give it an update, run a few torrents, and update the library.
I just love it when I can use old tech for new purposes. That thing cost a pretty penny back in the day. I’m glad that I can squeeze more value out of it. Better to be my Jellyfin server, then to be in a landfill.

Well, it looks like we’re gonna go with the buyback from Nissan. They are offering us the Kelley Blue Book value +40%. Which will only leave about $2000 on the debt that we owe for the car. Which is still a pretty good deal.
They’re going to give us a rental car for 30 days, and in that time we’re going to find a new EV. Oddly enough, the 2026 Nissan leaf so far has some of the best reviews. We’re also looking at Hyundai and Chevrolet. Basically it’s going to come down to who can give us front and rear facing cameras, faster charging, and good storage space for my girlfriend‘s mother‘s wheelchair, at the best price.
Good deal for us honestly. We got stuck at an interest rate that we didn’t like anyway. So this gives us the opportunity to reset all of that.
So, yay!

@nprofile…j87y My relationship with my parents aren't typical. We have a familiar relationship with each other, but I wouldn't call it close. I'm probably closer with my father, but only in a nostalgic sense. We really don't know each other that well. Same with my mother.
Since I'm an only child, it feels like I'm responsible for eventually taking care of two strangers.
But, I feel I owe them something, so I will do what I can with what I have. I'll be his advocit and help him get the best care that medicaid will afford him.
I may not like it, but I have dedicated myself towards compassion, and will find a middle path from which to move forward.

What a fucking morning this has turned out to be.
Girlfriend got a call from a third party associated with Nissan about the battery for her electric vehicle that has been recalled telling her that her battery is out of stock and that if she wants, someone will call her later to make an offer to buy back the car.
For how much? We wont know until they call.
Then I get a call from the administrator at the old folks home where my dad is at in Indiana (I'm in California) telling me that he needs to move to an assisted care facility and that I needed to take over his finances because he hasn't been paying his bills and he's been forgetting to take his medications.
Oh and apparently the police had to pick him up and give him a ride home because he ran out of battery on his electric scooter and forgot where he was.
So now I have to call him, convince him to give me power of attorney, and move to an assisted care facility. None of which he will do willingly.
What a great way to start the week.

In other news, yesterday I stayed off of YouTube Shorts and found other things to occupy my time. Played some games, read a few things, etc. It was nice not doing the same old thing.
I bought a new controller for my laptop to play Steam games. The 8bitdo Ultimate 2C for just $30. Lots of good reviews for it. Mostly people's shock at how good it is for the price. I figure $30 is a good price to try it out. I've been using my PS5 controller but I have to use a cable because I don't want to bother pairing it each time. So for the price, this was a good opportunity.
Bought "Mark of the Ninja" on Steam for like, $8. It looked like a fun game. I like sneaky games where the focus is on stealth rather than killing. I played it for a little while. It's fun. Glad I got it.
And now the day is ahead of me. I've got less plans than I had yesterday. I'll have to wait to see how #today unfolds.

Just curious, does does anyone remember Percy Ross? He was a multimillionaire who ran a weekly article in newspapers across the nation back in the late 80s early 90s where people would write in to him and his staff, and tell him what they needed, and if it touched their hearts, he would do his best to help.
Sometimes he would buy people washing machines and other appliances. He’d help pay for a years worth of rent. Hospital bills. All sorts of stuff.
He wasn’t trying to sell anything. He made his money making plastic bags.
His goal was to eventually give all of his money away before he died. Which apparently he did two years before his death.
I don’t know much more about the guy aside from everything above. I don’t know if he was problematic, or if he held bigoted views. He was a middle-aged man of the 80s, so I’m just gonna assume he would be somewhat problematic by today’s standards.
And yet...
I wish more people with wealth had that kind of attitude. To change the lives of people around them. To encourage others with wealth to do the same through kind acts like buying a new refrigerator for someone, or paying for a single mother‘s three children to go to band camp that summer.
Imagine a world where people who gathered the most wealth, sought to give it away before they died by helping others.
A Funk can dream.

My Girlfriends sister, who is 2 years older than she is, had no idea how WIFI worked. She's had a cell phone since cell phones were a thing, and yet she didn't know how to connect to my wifi or how it even worked.
The amount of will power it took to not look at her with abject confusion and amazement was probably one of the hardest things I've had to do in years.
But I walked her through it, and she was grateful.
The woman is my age.

My mother called me on Saturday in a worry because the apartment she lives in is being taken over by a new owner and they want to inspect the inside.
The problem is my mother is a bit of a hoarder and she's embarrassed to let anyone in. Fortunately she has a good relationship with my GF so she asked if she would come help clean today.
To which my GF was happy to help.
(Later my GF told me, "She's 78. She's not going to be around for much longer. So we either do this now, or afterwards. Better to do it now.)
I offered to come help but the apartment is so small, and she has so many things in it, that I would just end up getting in the way.
"It's a one woman job." she said.
I know when to get out of the way.

I don't get snooze buttons and I never will.
What is the point of getting 5 or 10 more minutes sleep? You're not going to get more rest. It's going to be harder to get out of bed. It confuses your sleep cycle. So why has this ever been a thing?
And I've had partners that use it! The only thing that happens is that they get out of bed a little later but they are STILL groggy.
Maybe instead of a snooze button, get to bed on time?
I'm so glad my girlfriend doesn't do this. We just, get out of bed when it's time. Imagine that.

I rewatched "Everything, Everywhere, All at once" yesterday and it hit me a lot differently.
After the first time I watched it, I thought it was a good action movie that stuffed a "many worlds" plot in it so that the mother and daughter could resolve their differences.
Yet watching it for a second time years later after having made many changes in the way I viewed the world, it was like I was watching the movie with completely different eyes.
And isn't that amazing? Isn't it wonderful how your life experience can give different meaning to art? How you can take the same music or painting and see it one way in your life, and then grow and see it years later as something more profound than you had originally thought?
This is why art, be it music or movies or paintings or however it is expressed is so important. It's there to make us think, help us feel, and even sometimes, re-examine the way we see things.
The arts are there to reflect back to us the many worlds of perception. Perception is the story board of our lives. When you connect to a meaningful piece of art, you connect with the rest of humanity and it's many worlds.

Stop thinking that the Fediverse needs to compete with corporate owned social media.
It doesn't.
Mastodon isn't in competition with X or Threads. PeerTube isn't in competition with YouTube. PixelFed is not in competition with Instagram. Friendica is not in competition with Facebook.
The Fediverse serves a different function then all of the billionaire funded social medias. The Fedi isn't meant to create a revenue flow for investors. It isn't meant to turn you into a product where your privacy is stripped from you.
The Fediverse is meant to give the USER control. It's meant to protect the disenfranchised. Give power to the people. Be safe from profit exploitation.
The Fediverse and corporate social media couldn't be more different. Trying to put them in competition is like trying to compare a toilet to a flower. Sure you can shit and piss on a flower, but the toilet will always stink and the flower will continue to grow.

@nprofile…u8z9 I joined a little after Eugene made Mastodon. An anarchist friend of mine showed it to me and I immediately recognized it as the future of social media (along with the rest of the Fedi)
I wasn't very active at first, and I got a lot of shit from people for bringing my Twitter attitude with me, but slowly I saw the value in the difference and allowed myself to dive deeper into it's ways.
I slowly left Twitter and made this place my home a few years before Twitter became the dumpster fire that it is.
I love the Fedi. I support the Fedi as much as I am able through my humor, my kindness, and what little financial support I can give. The people here are wonderful, and I feel like I can contribute in meaningful ways.
And for all of that, I am grateful,

I’m fairly sure there’s a crow in the neighborhood that’s learned to mimic the sound of a coaches whistle.
I can hear it moving around the neighborhood. I wonder if it’s trying to get other crows to do calisthenics?

This instance feels like I moved from the big city to some small town an hour a way. The people are fantastic, but the town itself looks like it's a few years behind big city accommodations.
Like, where are the busses dude? Am I expected to WALK the two miles across the instance???
